Leafs next year keeping Marleau
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>JakeD</b></div><div>Personally, I think your number for Marner is high for a 5-year deal.
I really like the looks of those D Pairs (especially that each rookie is paired with a vet), but with Dermott already out to start the season, I don't think Babs is willing to put two rookies in to start. I think it's more likely that Liljegren, Rosen, and Holl (I realize you traded him) are in to start the season and Sandin comes up halfway through the season like Dermott did in his first year.</div></div>
Yeah, I'd do that number for Marner if it was 7-8 year deal, not 5.

Another way to possibly fix leafs
This is really bad...
- Marner is getting above 10 for 7/8yr deal, not 4.
- Nylander alone would cost Manson+
- Kadri would cost Faksa+
- Zaitsev would not get 3rd back. Maybe 5th is more likely.

I'd be surprised if the Leafs could get a 4th but I think a 5th, 6th or 7th at the worst is what Zaitsev could be moved for. He's an NHL player no doubt, not a high end one obviously but he doesn't hurt you if given a defensively sound partner. Gardiner is the main reason he looked bad the past 2 seasons. Constantly having to bail out an absent minded pylon can make anyone look bad. Its like when anyone is partnered with Marincin, you're going to look really bad.

Because he's injured? And still a project? And has lost value? And stop rating him as the former 4th overall pick he is, because he hasn't been that since he was drafted.

I love the Idea but the only issue i have is having seen Sandin and Liljegren both on the 3rd Pair. I don't think either are NHL ready yet, id rather slot in Rosen + Oziganov or Trade for Connor Carrick again for a 6-7th round pick to NJD

TML REALISTIC 19-20
The cap will likely not go past $83 million next season and that is directly from commission and deputy commission. Your deal implies 2 things, first, that Connor Brown alone retains negative value. That's completely untrue. Second, Zaitsev's contract cannot be moved unless the Leafs are willing to unload additional assets. That's also untrue. Brown's value lies somewhere between a 2nd and 3rd pick, so why is a 2nd and 4th round Leafs pick included, just for New Jersey to take on Zaitsev's contract. Absolutely no way. Zaitsev has value, what that is remains to be seen, but he could net a 6th rounder by himself, without any other players, picks, prospects or assets of any other kind involved. If Clarkson's contract can be unloaded, Zaitsev's should be no issue whatsoever.

This Might Work Part 2
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>JakeD</b></div><div>Kapanen would need to have a HUGE year to earn that kind of contract in my opinion. Personally, I can see him getting $5M and Dermott getting $4M on a slightly different term. That kind of change doesn't impact your bottom line though.
I also think that in another year one of Moore, Bracco, or Petan will be able to play top-9 minutes and adding a UFA forward in someone like Kreider won't be necessary, maybe that money could be used on the blueline for more help, or Johnsson would get a bigger slice of the pie (see my comment on part 1 as well).</div></div>
Can't disgaree there. It's hard to gauge that far out what a Bracco or Johnsson will grow into in 2 years. Petan is the guy I see replacing Kadri long term; so in 21-22, I would be moving Kadri which makes Keider fit.
Notwithstanding, moving that money tonthe blueline is solid feedback and is appreciated.

I looked at your idea and I like it. Leafs may have to add a second rounder maybe, but the value is there. Both teams are getting what they need

Acquire Kreider at the Deadline
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>JakeD</b></div><div>It's not that Leafs fans want to get rid of Brown (Personally I'm a big fan) but there isn't really room for him in the top 9 and the sense is that someone making $1M less could fulfill a similar role on the fourth line. Small savings but it gives Dubas just a little more wiggle room next year.</div></div>
You traded him away and the other guy said he was a "cap dump" and associated him with Zaitsev, so I thought there was something Leafs fans knew that I wasn't aware of. If it's just to shave cap space, I'd find it elsewhere. I think Brown's a solid middle 6'er and you need that kind of depth. If you're putting Kreider into your top 6, move a top 6'er out (Hyman? Or Kapanen if you aren't going to be able to re-sign him, but you can do that in the off-season since he's an RFA).
It's not like Kreider is going to bring your 3.5+ G/PG much higher, you're just redistributing the production you already have and maybe improving in other areas or altering the team dynamic.

As a Toronto Maple Leafs follower, none of these deals is even remotely reasonable, including the idea that Matt Duchene could be signed for $4.25M.
Let me forestall the oncoming hurricane (pun intended) of outraged protests by Carolina fans that the Pesce deal is about a first-round draft pick short of reality -- I know. All of us Leafs realists know.

Something around Gardiner and Miller
In a dried up D rental market, as things currently stand, a healthy Jake Gardiner could probably net the Leafs a 1st round draft pick and a mid-level prospect. So does that directly equal the value of Miller, who has a decent term and AAV? Perhaps the Leafs throw in a 2020 3rd round pick and Dmitri Timashov?
Interestingly, if this was a sign-and-trade scenario, where the Knights extended Gardiner as part of the deal, I'd imagine Vegas would have to add something instead.

I know this was all fantasy but there's a lot going wrong here, IMO. Not just the team and trades but some of the comments above
1. All your 2019-20 figures are wrong because you placed horton on LTIR this year in order to fit Stone in. This means that $3.7m in bonuses earned by Matthews and Marner go on to the 2019-20 cap
2. Nylander is far from the leafs' worst contract. Zaitsev, yes. Probably Marleau as well.
3. I like Brett Pesce for what he is...but I think he's being praised for something he isn't, nor is ever expected to be...and that's a reliable offensive contributor. He's one of the game's best, young defensive d-men but when I hear guys in the Toronto media talk about him as "a guy that can chip on offensively" I wonder if they've actually watched this guy throughout his professional and amateur career. If you give up a player like Nylander or Kapanen...guys who are very noticeable when they're on the ice for the offence they generate...and replace one of them for Pesce, a guy who's solid but will quietly go about his business...the net returns might not be that obvious to the casual fan
4. A common symptom amongst a lot of posters on this site is to judge a player based on ACGM teams here, without actually watching the guy play...that's fine...it's tough to follow mid to bottom pairing players on other teams on a nightly basis...but to spout off like you know better in the threads is a joke. Nylander at a $7m cap hit will likely be one of our best contracts moving forward. It's fun again watching him play and he's back to zipping around the ice like he used to. Zaitsev isn't great for the term and value of his contract...but we're not looking at one of the worst contracts in the league here. It gets magnified in Toronto where we have a big cap crunch coming up this offseason...but to get 20min a night out of a guy for $4.5m is not terrible value. I do think the leaf's ultimately need to sweeten a deal to move him...but this isn't a "huge dump" as the kid can still contribute to any lineup he's in.

Wouldnt mind testing this while Naz is out
Johnsson-Nylander-Brown was a real good line last night when they used it. Wouldn't mind seeing them sticking with that a bit longer. Gives Nylander a guy who can dig the puck outta the corners in Brown, a guy that can finish in Johnsson, and both guys are responsible defensively so it opens up Nyalnder's offence more. Keep Marleau with Matthews and Kapanen, they've been clicking and generating a lot. No point in messing up that line if they're already doing things right
