Interesting that in about 99% of CapFriendly posts, Marner gets paid so much more than the other upcoming RFAs.

Marner salary will partially be determined by an offer sheet. Let's imagine an offer sheet (not signed) 11m. There are few teams that offer 11m, few good teams have 11m cap space, few teams would pay four firsts especially if there was a risk of lottery picks included in their four picks.
So let's stop the illusion there are 31 teams in on the bidding for Marner. And somewhere along the line in Marner's case "hometown discount" is probably real.
For some reason IMO the Leafs overpaid for their two RFAs Nylander and Matthews. But there is no reason that can tradition can/should continue. So let's not compare Marner next salary to Matthews. Compare to Aho. (virtually identical stats in the past two years). Rantanen and Point.

I’ve always been a big fan of growing from within, we certainly have a large pool of blueline prospects.
I think Rosen is the only one ready but we will have to wait till after training camp to see.

It’s better, it will get shot down on here but I think it’s close. I’ve noticed a lot of good ideas get shot down on here and then they happen lol. I’ve even shot down trade ideas. Most recently fox. Didn’t think the canes would get that much for him. Muzzin to Toronto? Why do we want another lhd. And then bam! I have to eat crow.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Jtcurls</b></div><div>I don’t see it..
Zaitsev looked passable when partnered with Muzzin so I think that pairing lives.
Nylander is staying. I don’t think Dubas trades him before seeing him play 1 full year on this contract. Plus trading him would I think not be popular in the room. It would be seen as breaking his word. Even though I don’t think he actually gave that promise.
Kadri let the players down with his suspension. They won’t say it while he is still a member of the team but I think he pays the price of being exiled from Toronto.</div></div>
This is all thought experiments. Realistically I think you may be right about Kadri but zaitsev dirsn’t fit the team long term and was not a dubas signing, he is also hard to replace.
I’m really not sure exactly which way it would go. There are a lot of combinations.
Marleau gone??? Not likely but who knows
Kadri/brown
Kadri/brown/zaitsev get an rhd (seems redundant when you have to give one up)
Maybe kappy or Mango ask for too much and they are traded.
I do agree about nylander. I don’‘t Think he is going anywhere.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Skylernishi</b></div><div>How would you lose Hutton on waivers?? He would become the 4-5 Dman. As for Madden, he has top 6 potential. Mid 6 ideally, and losing him after college is the risk you take when drafting or trading for an NCAA player. Signing Kapanen on an offer sheet for the $4.2 I have plugged him in for could cost a 1st and 3rd. You get the 3rd, a 2nd pairing dman, and a potential second line winger*
* Madden is a C but likely to become a W at the NHL level.</div></div>
Rielly Dermott and muzzin... do we sit him in the pressbox for 3m? No use for Hutton so gone on waivers. I was demonstrating how appealing Hutton is as a piece in this trade.
Like I said get stecher in there. Now that is worth it. Rhd we can pair with muzzin. There are dozens of ufa’s we could sign cheaper than Hutton. Why give up kappy?
I would rather take the 1st and 3rd not have the cap hit coming back for a player we don’t want or need.

26, 34, 52, and this year 22 in 32 games.
I know he is the prized RHD but really you think he is equivalent to Marner who had 100 pts in year 3 and was a top 4 pick in the draft.</div></div>
In terms of value to the team they are very close. Actual value I would say maybe a 1st and a 3rd apart.
If you wanted to pry Dumba free you would need to wow them. Like I said, leafs lose that trade.
I had an agm with a different idea. Where the leafs traded nylander and zaitsev for rental RHD, Giving the cap space to go after a ufa D man or possible trade with futures.
Would free up enough money for a major splash. Would result in 20m in space to re up a couple of rfa’s

Marner signs the contract not his agent.
If Ferris tries to put it to the leafs too hard, I believe Mitch will handle that efficiently by stepping in.
Patti Marleau should get the C for his final year.
You have to earn the C and no one else except Tavares and Patti have done that.</div></div>
All very reasonable points.
I will counter with Marners on Camera comment:

Times have changed, I only ever dreamed of winning the cup as a young kid.

Signing bonus’ taxed at 25% in Canada.... Marners endorsements, last count he was up to 14 seperate endorsement deals.
That being said I think he gets 10+
I would put the range from 9-11m on a deal that is 6 years.

So leafs are on a California road trip and 3 guys go down... uh oh... not only that when you pull a guy up from the marlies you have to include their daily cap hit into the equation.
The leafs were very diligent in sending Moore up and down this season. His accumulated daily cap hit was 308k for 25 games. You have 106k... so maybe 11-12 man/games...

RHD Trade - bye bye Naz and Willy
All excellent points, and an entirely accurate analysis. I would prefer trading Nylander for the right-handed Brett Pesce instead of the left-handed Mattias Ekholm. You'd need to shave half a million off the payroll, but I'm sure that could be done. For example, do you think Mitch Marner's playoff performance solidified his claim to be paid $10M?

Nylander has a huge hit, was awful this year and no showed in the playoffs again. Ekholm is an #1D who averages nearly 24 minus a night and is signed to a crazy team friendly deal. Honestly I don't see why Nashville would want him.

Outside of Anderson he was really the only noticable player they had that could generate.

Marner is getting 11 million at least. He has the greediest agent in the league.

Oi JTC...
US$7M on the fourth line and at the wing position is BOLD!
IMO that's where the "Armchair GM-ing" has to start. Free Willy and the rest of the roster begins to clarify and some instant breathing room is obtained (thus Bracco fills the Willy hole).......
That said, I still think NK & CB on other teams in 2019/20 works well too!
