Chicago Blackhawks signed Alex Vlasic (6 Years / $4,600,000 AAV)
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Ste_Catherine_Street</b></div><div>I respectfully disagree with everyone saying this is a good contract. He's played less than 100 games. 6 years 4.5M is crazy risky.
What was the rush to sign him long-term???? Sorry but this guy is a 3rd pairing dman. Hate the risk to this.</div></div>

Woah this was a surprise to me, but a very good one! Very happy for him and the Hawks. He's a #1 LD in the NHL today after what was essentially his rookie year and that's extremely hard to find for 6 years $4.6M.

Skinner likely isn't waiving for Chicago with Buffalo so close to making the playoffs. And retaining $8.8m in real money doesn't seem like something Pegula would approve. But if those two things happened, the Hawks might consider this.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>ChiHawk</b></div><div>Was saying that from the perspective of being an RFA, a hometown boy, and the Hawks getting extremely lucky on a bridge deal as a basement number. But market value is a different thing, $3M would be 100% underpaid on a bridge and even more underpaid as a factor into a long term deal thus taking the ability away for Vlasic to really cash in at the age of 24 or 25.</div></div>
How about this.
Contract structure:
Year 1: $5M
Year 2: $5M
Year 3: $5M
Year 4: $5.5M
Year 5: $6.5M
Year 6: $7M
Year 7: $8M
Year 8: $8M
This would put him at a $6.25M cap hit/aav for 8 years, more manageable cap hit, paying him fair market, and locks him up long term. Something like this could work.

Thread:
2024 opening night
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>ChiHawk</b></div><div>Highly doubt Vlasic would sign an 8 year deal at $5.2M. Remember, as a 22 year rookie against the toughest assignments, he's ranked top 3 defensive players in the defensive zone. If Vlasic were never to improve from this season, unlikely given his age and the improvement from a year ago, he'd be worth $6M minimum to $8M on a 8 year deal. He and his agent are not only wouldn't take a penny less, they will bet on him improving and thus almost certainly don't want a 8 year deal unless it's around $8M which the Hawks probably wouldn't do. For that reason, he's likely a 3 year bridge and going to land anywhere from $3M to $5M on a 3 year bridge deal is my guess. If I'm Chicago though, I'd push to lock him up between $6M and $7M on a 8 year deal as that will look like a bargain in a few years with Vlasic almost certainly improving and the cap continuing to rise. We could be looking at the best shutdown defender in the league in a couple years, and I'd argue if he had played 6 less games last season in the NHL and could qualify for the Calder, he'd be in the conversation right behind Bedard and Faber with a pretty good argument.</div></div>
I disagree with this. Shutdown dmen don't make $8M. If he signed at $5.2M for 8 years, he would be overpaid for the first 2 to 4 years of the contract. Which means overall, he will have made more money in total than he would have on a bridge plus his contract after the bridge deal. At his peak, as a shutdown defenseman, $5.2M should be right in line with market value. The only way he gets $8M or more is if he adds a ton of offense to his game. Which is possible, but, again, the overpayment in the first few years of the contract should be able to make up for that discrepancy, and if they structure the contract properly and backload the deal, he will be making that much or close enough to it in the back half of the contract, just at a lower AAV, which helps the team.
Contract structure:
@ a $5.18M AAV x 8 years
Actual salary:
Year 1: $3M
Year 2: $3M
Year 3: $3M
Year 4: $4.5M
Year 5: $5.5M
Year 6: $6.5M
Year 7: $8M
Year 8: $8M

Demidov should be on the board at #3 as Anaheim likely takes Leshevnov at #2. I also think the Hawks take Lindstrom over Leshevnov even if they fall to #3 and Demidov does go #2.

Lee is honestly still good. Key word good, and good doesn't merit a 7 million contract. Great captain too a nd it fits Chicago plan of surrounding Bedard with leaders and former MVPs like Folingo, Perry and Hall, Lee would fit right in

You know what, sure
The pick is not only next year, but can go as far down as 2027. a 3rd round pick will most likely not even make the show. Lee does have value but the islanders would need to either retain or take back at least 2 million for him not to be a cap dump imo
And with a core of Romanov, Horvat, Sorokin, Barzal, and Dobson even if the pick goes to 2027 I put good money they can be a playoff team by that point

A kurashev trade from my perspecitve
Excellent idea and post, KFC. Certainly helps to get a read on Kurashev's value. Thanks for doing this. Takes two to tango, for sure!
Bottom line, IMO... Now (after this season) is the time to get the most value for him in trade, IF there's compelling value in return. Maybe it's there; maybe not. He's a useful, versatile, cost-controlled, relatively young player probably more valuable to a contending team up against the cap struggling to round out their roster. What that translates to in trade we may (or may not if it doesn't happen) know soon.
Cheers

A kurashev trade from my perspecitve
ANA is further in the rebuild and Verbeek has outright said he wants to turn the corner next year with this team. I don’t see the benefit in downgrading from Zegras for late 1sts and 2nds. I’d for sure pass, but kudos and thank you for not throwing in a LHD. Even though it’s a no from my pov, it’s well thought out and original 👍

What a weapon
Toews is done as a player by all indications. If he's not, it would be very unlikely Toews wants to play for a team that is rebuilding.
Stamkos is not going to sign with a rebuilding team either, even for an overpay.
The Hawks may sign Zadarov to a short 1 or 2 year deal, but not beyond that.
Hawks are rebuilding as you know, they don't want to win a lot of games next season either as they position themselves for a lottery pick in 2025. The summer of 2025 is likely when you see the Hawks get a bit more aggressive in free agency and in 2026 even more so as the 2026/2027 is when their competitive window truly opens.

I don’t mind the Murphy trade, especially if you are bringing in DeMelo to replace him.
As others have stated the per year amounts for DeMelo and Teravainen are a little steep but two years for DeMelo is short term and should not be a problem moving forward. Teravainen for five years may require an overpay to get him to come back to Chicago. With the cap projected to increase significantly over the next couple of years and Hall, Foligno, Dickinson etc. dropping off the cap/roster in the near future I really wouldn’t mind this Teravainen deal.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Kyle_Davidson</b></div><div>My argument against this is what are the chances a 6th or 7th round pick gets you an Entwistle. Is it a favor for the player? I like him as depth, and if he goes for a 6th or 7th, why not sign him to a contract teams wouldn’t claim him for (2AAV) and have him stick around.</div></div>
Sure, that's one way to go. I say a 6th or 7th because I don't think the Hawks even qualify him, much less give him a big raise to $2m. If the Hawks want to spend $2m or $3m on a 4th liner, then go get a guy that actually upgrades the lineup. Entwistle is an effort guy, but he's not a long term piece. Rather keep Anderson or give Dach and/or Slaggert ice time next season. Maybe even a guy like Ralston.

If only if
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Kyle_Davidson</b></div><div>This is a valid way of thinking, but I prefer to think that the hawks put Kurashev through arbitration for 2 reasons. 1. To establish a precedent for RFA’s in negotiations and 2. Because they honestly did not believe Kurashev was worth his price and wanted to buy time. If Kurashev has not proven his case to the hawks after this season, or at least made a good start in doing so. This isn’t a mistake by Davidson per se, but if he cannot admit Kurashev’s value then that’s not a great sign.</div></div>
I gotta believe Davidson is seeing value in Kurashev NOW (if not before)... I think you're right that he was buying time with him. And, as we all know, Kurashev certainly has made a jump this year.
Maybe it is just a timing thing with Kurashev? If Dach (Kirby) and the Cat weren't going to be on the same timeline as the Hawks needed for this LONG rebuild, then perhaps Kurashev isn't, either? Or, maybe some players just take longer to grow into becoming an NHLer? (Thinking of you, Patrick Sharp.)
It'll be interesting to see what happens next - with both Kurashev's development, as well as with the Hawks' rebuild. They may align together, they may not. No matter what happens in this regard, though, your point in another post is a valid one, IMO... If Kurashev is traded, the Hawks would need to acquire assets that have a high likelihood of becoming what Kurashev now actually is: an NHL player.
