Is Pietrangelo Possible
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Riley816</b></div><div>If he wants to squeeze the last dollar out of a team trading for his rights won't matter. He'll go to free agency and get every penny he can. Whether it be from Toronto Vegas or another team.
When does Toronto stop bidding against itself if they trade for his rights?? Tavares 'took a discount' to come to the Leafs when the cap was lower. If they offer 8.5x7 does he counter with 11.5x7, all but minimum as signing bonus, all signing bonus in the 1st 4 years, full NMC, etc. Toronto has to do it because they traded for his rights??</div></div>
You're missing the point. If you want petro and you wait for FA, you run the risk of losing him. If you're serious about acquiring him then trade something of value to the blues with the contract in place

Is Pietrangelo possible? Yes. Would it be dumb for the Leafs to sign him? Yes. Would they have to sacrifice depth to sign him? Yes.
It just never made sense to me on why the leafs would sign him. Yes he’s good, but he’s going to want $9,000,000+. You sign him and that’s $42,000,000 in 4 players (AM, MM, JT, and AP respectively).

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Lenny7</b></div><div>Counter point to "If Nylander is loyal and wants to keep playing with Matthews (he should take a discount)" would be "If the Leafs are loyal and want Nylander to keep playing with Matthews they'd offer him fair market value".</div></div>
What is fair market value. I think everyone uses the recent Pasternik, Larkin, Ehlers contracts as the market. Which is fair because he is a somewhat comparable player points wise. They all signed when the cap was lower so he should make a little more based on that. Someone before pointed out that when Ehlers signed his deal it was 8% of the cap and then they did the math to show what that would mean for Nylander. I think that's a fair way to do it. Maybe use Pasternik's contract instead?

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Laynious</b></div><div>No, No, No.
Maybe I missed the meeting where they handed out the "Tanev Kool-Aid". WHY oh WHY are people so crazed about this guy??? I have seen him play many, many times......Hes a dependable D man (when he isn't injured, which is a lot) so I'll give you that. But you are willing to give up 2 firsts and 2 NHL players for him?? This is crazy.</div></div>
I think everyone knows my stance on our D and my unwillingness to chase after a stud Dman. I like what we have at home.
If we are having issues.. could be performance, could be injuries. I think Tanev would be the right type of D to go after. I don’t want any offensive D at all. Ability to move the puck and a sound Dzone guy. Vancouver is in the right situation to retain 50%. If we do not need him next season he would be an easy move at 2.2m. I could see this being more of a deadline type of move or even mid season. I think if we need to go after someone they have to be able to retain salary and be easily moved. I think Tanev meets all those requirements. Only had 8 teams on his m-ntc.
But to reconfirm what I already stated I have no reason to believe that our D core won’t be solid this year.
Please stop trading away our team for guys that will never get moved or guys that are horrible in their own end.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Laynious</b></div><div>You most definitely don't get, arguably, one of the top 3 D in the world for that......you just don't.
Must haves:
One of Horvat, Boeser
One or 2 of Demko, Dipietro, Petterson, Virtanen, Juolevi
at minimum a 1st and 2nd with no conditions.
Sorry guys, thats the price</div></div>
Your not getting pettersson Boeser Horvat Hughes Demko or our 2019 first. Jim wouldn't trade any of those as stripping those away further push back our rebuild.
Its not smart to get a 28 yo player when a teams rebuilding. Benning is just doing his due diligence by contacting ottawa. Nothing more.
If canucks really wanted him, and let's say canucks got Jack Hughes in next year's draft that with Boeser Horvat Pettersson Dahlen Hughes Demko Juolevi Lind would probably allow canucks to sign Karlsson in UFA. But we'll see what happens.
Only smart move is maybe going after him in UFA otherwise I hope the canucks stay away. Cuz they shouldn't trade their first cuz guaranteed they'll be a bottom 10 team and without the first a trade doesn't seem realistic.

I completely agree. If TB doesn't win the Cup this year (if they get him) then its a huge bust IMO.

True words
Don't know if. the author has even watched a Leaf game. 103 points, 12th in GAA, hardly a bad team or a bad defence. And again another fool that doesn't understand the structure of forward lines. Can't imagine why the the author says the Leafs have no # 2C. Matthews is good, and Kadri has been a 30 goal scorer two years in a row. Please don't be so misinformed as says a Kadri has to be classified as a 3C.
See author is from STL. If he's a Blues fan, he has seen how successful the Blues have been with a "name" and expensive defence. They haven't. Any well, a great troll or a completely misinformed writer of crap.

Hyman- Matthews-Marner
Marleau- Tavares- Nylander
(LW)-Kadri- Kapanen
Thats a scary center core and top 6. Save the bozak money on a solid D man. Thats what I would do. Hard to match up with 3 scoring lines with great speed like those 3 lines

Agreed on both parts. I don't think Ottawa would refuse trading EK to toronto if the offer was right.....and the right offer is more than I'd personally like to give up for EK

In a fantasy-NHL type of situation where the Leafs and Sens played in different conferences, maybe, though I think that deal wouldn't do it, even if it's for a 1-year rental of Karlsson. Realistically, the Leafs have this plan for sustained development, growth and success, so that deal would be counter-intuitive, even if it helps them in the immediate future and short term. Also, on John Tavares, that would incredibly risky of him. I think if he signed a 1 year deal anywhere, it would be with the Islanders. My sense, however, is that he will sign a deal with either the Stars or Devils.

Yes. The offer is light for EK. If the Leafs had the best offer on the table, I honestly don't think the Sens would have a problem trading EK to them. They would presumably be taking a chunk of the Leafs' future out from under them in exchange for a player they theoretically have no chance to keep.
It two offers appear somewhat equal...then I'd see them inclined to move EK as far away from the division as possible.

Is This Enough For Doughty?
Yeah, I think this is fair value for remaining two years of an elite dman like Doughty. JVR would likely test FA anyways, so he's not much value in the deal. Depending on cap, Leafs could probably keep him to play out his contract.
LA will be evaluating their place in the West all year, and Doughty has already started to be vocal about leaving if they don't point in the right direction. Good chance they miss the playoffs this year.
The biggest issue with this becomes balancing the cap with Doughty's next deal ($9M), Matthews ($10M), Nylander ($7M), and Marner ($7M).
That's Marleau contract really hinders things.
