Description

Matthews finds NYI pajamas and bed spread under Christmas tree in 2018 from “anonymous” (LL-hehe). Islanders then offersheet Matthews July 2019 for McDavid type contract.
Matthews accepts forcing Toronto to accept with cap hell or decline and receive the compensation (4 first round picks).
If Toronto matches offersheet for Matthews the islanders offersheet Marner...who coincidentally got NYI pajamas and bedspread at Christmas 2018 from anonymous.

Matthews can do what he wants, but does he really want to sign with the Isles?.That Isles will still be really poor team with little cap flexibility in the future. Is it worth it to see for a few dollars more?

Both of them would need to sign those offersheets and they wouldnt, because why would they sign with Isles..

You gotta believe the NYI are one team that has something to lose, something big, if they offer sheet Matthews. First off, he'd have to accept an offer and I don't see any realistic way he can be convinced to play there. He'll get that kind of money in Toronto or elsewhere. Second, the Leafs would acquire some wonderful unprotected 1st round picks from a team that is basically playing blind at the moment - they have no clear direction. Finally, they have Matthew Barzal around, who you can bet your sweet patootie the Leafs would offer sheet right back.

at this point I think a realistic offer sheet that might not be matched by Toronto would be 5 years, 15 million a season.

Also 12.5 is an easy match by TO, I imagine his initial offer from TO will start around the 10.5-11 million range and he'll start at about 13 million and I bet it ends with an 11.5 million contract.
