I haven't seen better options to anchor a first line with reilly. Who would you suggest?

It'd be nice if we could get pesce cheaper and keep jarnkrok or kampf but free agency for big top 4 right handed d might be expensive. Even if we overpay our team will be much better

Disagree big time. 6'3 and very physical and generally considered a very good stay at home d. Also, he's a righty

Well the team kampf was being traded to was random. The point of the thread was to see if Pesce could fit in to the lineup while still building a decent roster.

I mean he's got 13 points as a second line man this year. Obviously I'm slotting him in next to reilly on our top line but 7+ sounds steep. I suppose I could see 6.5 mill

I would argue that the value is about right. The assets are the type Calgary is looking for if they were to tank and look to retool. I'd be surprised if they find better elsewhere at the deadline but you never know.

Instead of adding to what you already have you've now just made marginal upgrades to those positions at the cost of a significant amount of draft capital, and at least Lindholm would be walking at the end of the year.
The Leafs are also going to need every bit of defensive help they can get this postseason, and that means keeping Liljgren too.</div></div>
I would argue that these would be major upgrades to our d and offense. Both tanev amd linholm are bug impact players. Tanev is a better version of mccabe on the right side. If we're discussing getting every bit of help for the playoffs, I would also prefer tanev to liljegren for a postseason run. I also think these are middling assetts we'd be giving up and parting with them for impact players is exactly what we need to do.

Well the value comes from the fact that liljegren is an rfa who fits Seattle's timeline and is probably a top 4 defenseman who can be had next year at an ok cap hit. Whereas Larsson has so far underperformed this year on an underperforming Seattle team and therefor he is somewhat undervalued.

I dunno. Hard to say his cost. Based off of several tanev trade discussions on this site, the medium consensus from Calgary fans is that this is roughly what it would take.

I think leafs would have to pay that much. The good news is that we'd now have 9 d including timmins and Benoit and enough capspace going forward to navigate changes easily. I don't see how you make this deal without losing either minten or liljegren and liljegren makes more sense considering his cap hit. Robertson makes little sense since he's just finally clicking for the first time, he has little value on a trade market and a low cap hit.

Prefered lines
I agree generally with TMLBRIAN regarding defense, however I think the forward lines are off.
The problem with these forward lines is you effectively have terrible defensive players on your 2nd and 3rd lines. Tavares bertuzzi amd nylander will get torched defensively. You can't have domi centre Robertson on a line from a defensive point of you either. Plus domi is unlikely starting at centre and Robertson is likely starting with the marlies but who knows.
I can see
bertuzzi matthews nylander
Knies tavares marner
Domi kampf jarnkrok
Lafferty holmberg reaves
...assuming they sadly waive timmins and go with 12 forwards

Forward *depth* is not something the Canes need. They already have one of the deepest winger cores in the league. They need KK to take another step. They don't need to be weakening the D core, especially on the right in exchange for a winger that... arguably doesn't get on the top line?</div></div>
Fair enough.

Carolina hate paying big prices for guys on expring deals anyway. You can move Skjei elsewhere considering you don't need to re-sign him now that Orlov is a Hurricane. Pesce's much more required because of the issues at RD without him. 39 year old Brent Burns, Tony DeAngelo, Jalen Chatfield and Dylan Coghlan ain't filling me with confidence</div></div>
Wait who are you valuing higher? I would have thought that pesce is more valuable than skjei. Is this wrong?
I'm not saying Carolina is targeting Nylander but I imagine they're looking at ways to get better particularly in terms of forward depth. Do you think you can get a better player than nylander by keeping pesce and trading skjei?

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Caniac2000</b></div><div>Moving Skjei makes more sense to keep the LH-RH balance. Slavin - Burns Orlov - DeAngelo Skjei - Pesce works now because that perfect 6 is a LH-RH combination. Having Orlov play on the right would be bad because it prohibits him moving the puck as well as he can do, and the Canes system that relies so heavily on point shots would need Orlov to come more central for a better angle. It's why it's built the way it is</div></div>
I totally agree with this assessment. But then you probably won't get a nylander straight up for skjei. And also, maybe skjei resigns for cheaper than pesce. i find it hard to believe that if Treliving were to make this offer that carolina wouldnt strongly consider it.

This, as a base doesn't make sense. Carolina needs a RHD back for Pesce (Please note I said RHD, this means Brodie can pound sand) whether that's Lilly or someone from another team like Joki, Nylander doesn't make sense. Carolina would want to move Pesce to avoid losing him for nothing. Otherwise, trading him for another player they're going to lose for nothing makes no sense. Just go into the season with the Frakenblueline</div></div>
Presumably orlov or skjei comes over to the right. Carolina has 5 legit top 4 dmen, so it just seems like they're primed to make a move. Maybe they move skjei instead. But if they did move pesce it seems like their d core will not only still be intact but elite. And then add nylander...

I don't hate it.
A couple thoughts:
I think you can get toews cheaper and use the extra cap space to sign another centre. It appears they're planning on putting domi on the wing and therfore signing another centre makes more sense. Robertsons probably going to start on the marlies so that would free up an extra roster spot.

I don't know. If I'm new management in calgary looking at another potential year of mediocrity and a lot of expiring contracts, I would sell half my defense for budding prospects, take advantage of their first round pick and use their massive cap space to go nuts next summer.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>BURGHgirl</b></div><div>A 1C who is a right shot is worth significantly more than a wing. Add in a guy who is slotted in as 1RD at 50% salary. Nylander's value goes down because teams know Toronto doesn't want to pay him. Calgary could sign him next summer for nothing. Minten may be highly touted in TOR, but he hasn't made done anything outside the WHL to show he has higher potential than other 2nd Rd picks. Still think the 1st should go to Calgary</div></div>
This is objectively not true. All analyses say that nylander is owed a higher contract than lindholm. This factors in position. Therefore nylander is worth more. Calgary is having a similar problem resigning lindholm, therefore your argument of diminishing value would apply to lindholm as well
