What if the Hawks get 1OA again
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>babouie</b></div><div>I would not go after Mathews . Hawks will have to hand out some very big contracts if there prospects pan out . Giving Mathews 14 mil at this point in the rebuild would hurt the team longterm cap wise like the idiotic decision to sign Tavares was . Ever since that signing the Leafs have had to dump all sorts of depth players and pics . Bedard ,Korchinski ,Nazer , Reichel , Seth Jones ( no elc ) , Moore , all these guys ELC's will end within the same two or three year period . And then Hawks are back in cap hell . The Leafs had to dump Kadri after signing Mathews ( double kadri salary ) were the Leafs better of after this signing ???</div></div>
First this offseason the cap is anticipated to rise about $5 mil. The Hawks at the moment have the 2nd most cap space in the league. They can absolutely afford to pay Matthews a proven superstar in the league. Even after they sign him they will have an outrageous amount of cap space they can save for the furture. However if you pass on Matthews when you can afford him just to expect to pay out a bunch of money for players who might not pop the team suffers even more. You don't pass on superstar talent when you can afford it.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Snowhawk18</b></div><div>I think this post is 100% correct. Matthews is obviously an exceptional talent but due to the salary cap restraints you can only have two or three of these guys very most before it really ties your hands with the remainder of the roster building.</div></div>
I disagree Matthews is the proven superstar in the league and the Hawks can afford him this offseason. The prospects we drafted are not guaranteed to come anywhere close to the talent level of Matthews. If you pass on Matthews because you are saving money to pay a prospect who might not ascend to that level its even worse.
Best-Worst problem is you pay Matthews and your talent level booms and demands big pay days thats good problems to have.
What if the Hawks had passed on Hossa said, no we need to budget for the future of all these young guys in the pipeline. We don't win 3 Cups. Sure the cap pain hurt but the Hawks cried into 3 cups in that time.

Hellebuyck said he wants a 8 x $9,500,000 essentially, no?</div></div>
because of what Troy Terry just got and Zegras is about to get. He will be in that range after this season.

22 mil of cap space still in the piggy bank with the cap sure to rise in years to come as well.

Free Agency is the player's choice. This is based on the real possibility that AM34 says he wants to play in the USA with the next greatest player in the league.

Trade for Kakko
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Snowhawk18</b></div><div>I would argue that at this point Kakko and Reichel are a wash.
Goodrow’s contract is going to cost the Rangers a 1st round pick to move.
Wise is a non-factor. Raddysh and a 2nd round make this overpay, complete robbery for the Rangers
I think the deal should look more like this:
To the Hawks - Kakko, Goodrow and a 1st
To the Rangers - Reichel</div></div>
I like the thought and I also think Kakko is and will be the far better player so I definitely make that trade.

IMO I see Kakko as the best player in the deal and will be the far better NHL player in years to come. I see Kakko as far better than Reichel and that is why my deal was structured this way.

So you are trading for a guy with a known drug problem, over 30, 2 years left on a big cap hit, in the midst of a rebuild, and he won't be a teammate who will hang out with his teammates... this sounds so attractive... why hasn't Kyle landed this sweet deal yet?

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Chazz44</b></div><div>30th overall is not even considered a first in my mind. Caps clear up some space and Hawks get someone who can really amp up Bedard's productivity while taking off some pressure down the middle.</div></div>
Regardless of what you think a 1st round pick is actually a ... 1st round pick and that Toronto pick might be a lot higher than 30th especially if they don't resign Matthews. Hawks have way too many forwards as it is this season and plenty of veteran "depth" players to mentor Connor in his rookie year. Its a bad idea to make that trade and I don't even have to worry about Davidson makinng it.

Not a fan of this deal. Trading 1st RD picks is something the Hawks should only be doing if they are trading up in the 1st round or acquiring young high ceiling prospects, not old troubled heavy cap players.
