It's entirely possible that Buffalo simply did not want to pay Mitts and keep him long-term; they'll have other young players to pay soon and he got squeezed out. I think we can forget whatever rumors we heard of what he wanted from them; that sort of talk is unreliable hearsay or speculation. Who are his comps that are currently making $6.5-7M? I'm not even sure Necas, who is a better player, will get more than $6.5M.

Are you referring to Kovalenko as a "bust"? He literally just came over to the US and is regarded as a very good two-way prospect; played well in the KHL.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>GiggywithGibby</b></div><div>Mitts isn't going to take less that 7AAV, and go look at your injury log this season and tell me it's a good idea to run a 21 man roster.</div></div>
If there's anything we should have learned it's that making statements like, "Player X isn't going to take deal Y" in such absolute terms is folly; players get deals that makes sense for them that don't always align with our idea of what a player "should" or do end up getting. I would ask: who are Mitts' comps and what are the possible scenarios for him at his age, production and role? One comp that really makes sense is Dylan Strome; he's a year older than Mitts and had 65 point production the year before his arb-eligible RFA deal was played. Mitts might make it to 60 points (he's at 54 right now) but, let's be real: just like Strome, he isn't a high-end 2C but is a guy you can count on to give you steady play, especially if you put him with good wings. That deal looks good so far as Strome is having another 60+ point season at a cost of $5M/season.
Also, what is the effect of the salary cap increase going to play? Are we going to see a concomitant rise in player salaries or is it just going to be the stars that can expect to see more money coming their way? What MacFarland has said is they did their due diligence before they acquired him so, apparently, they feel like they can get some sort of deal done that works for the Avs and, presumably, Mitts and his camp.
All-in-all, if Strome is a reasonable comp and Mitts isn't determined to extract every last penny he can, something along the lines of $5.5-6Mx5-6 years isn't at all farfetched.

Would definitely give them the space they need but I'm not sure anyone wants five more years of a bottom-sixer. Parise has already said this is his last year.

I get your point but: "Prove it" deals are typically one year after a big jump in production or performance; Mitts' current deal is a bridge and he signed it after coming off his ELC where he was very underwhelming in terms of his production. Not sure what's going to happen with his next deal (long vs short-term) or how much he'll make but he does have a good case for getting a good raise over his current salary, probably more in the $6M range.

Serious rebuild
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>YoungPattyKane</b></div><div>I think there is some interesting decisions here. I think a lot of Drouin's success is a MacKinnon effect. I'd sign for the vet min not much more. Also heavy on the UFA d-men? I'm not fully familiar with the Avs prospects, but what is the plan with Behrens? start him in the minors or can he plug and play on the big boys?</div></div>
Yes, it is probably true playing a lot with MacKinnon (and Rants, Cale and Toews) has a lot to do with his resurgence. Other teams might look at him and say, "No chance he replicates that here because we don't have enough guys like that to shelter him with." But I don't think they can get away with signing him to a minimum deal given his actual production. It will be interesting to see if he chooses being in a comfortable situation where he gets to be a supporting player but plays for a lot less than his "market value." You would think, given his history, he might just prefer to remain in his current environment for his own sense of health even if it means leaving a lot of money on the table. But he might decide to bet on himself and go get some more money elsewhere. Definitely worth keeping an eye on.
Behrens is probably going to have to go through the A before he ever gets a shot at the NHL. I honestly thought he'd be a guy they dealt and they still could but he projects as a decent 3rd pair defensive D that can move the puck and the Avs need that so maybe they want to hang onto him so they can have a cheap option there.

Avs Offseason No Landeskog
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Poogy</b></div><div>Way too much money for Drouin I doubt they bring him back next year</div></div>
He's got 46 points so far this season and only needs 8 more to post his highest totals ever. He's actually playing some defense and his stats are up all over the board; his relatives are quite high and he's shooting the puck well and creating plays. Is that sustainable, especially on another team? Maybe not but he seems to have gotten his career back on track. I would think the Avs would like to have him back but probably can't afford him unless he takes a deep discount or they know Landy isn't returning. $4M for a top-six winger is more than fair, though.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>MeetYourMakar</b></div><div>I wouldn't move Manson to keep Walker. Manson does more around the puck and plays with a presence. JJ likely wont be back so they need some size and Walker's offence can be found elsewhere, like Malinski.</div></div>
Malinski seems to have taken a step back since returning to the Eagles; his production is down which is disappointing. Ideally, he would have built off his success in the NHL. That doesn't mean he won't get another shot but the Avs are very impatient with guys like him. But I do agree that Manson does have a "presence" around the puck, even if he makes mistakes and takes penalties. That being said, I do think they can find someone that may not be able to do what he does offensively but can be a good defensive stalwart.

An Optimistic Attempt
I do think it's very unlikely Ritchie gets brought in next season; it sounded like they want him to go back to junior for one more year. I'm not sure he has anything left to accomplish there considering how good he was this season but, since they can't send him to the A if he truly isn't ready to be in the NHL in a significant role, they may feel like they have no choice but to leave him in junior for another year. I do think they should sign him so he's under contract and he can join once next juniors season is over.

Would be great to see him playing again but I imagine he's on the longer end of the recovery window (16 months) and returning to playoff hockey after not having played for two years would be really tough. Can't help but think the Avs and Landy are going to be extra careful trying to get him back and will just wait until next season.

No need to sign Teravainen when Drouin is sitting right there and would probably take less money. Colton wouldn't be terribly hard to unload considering his age, position and contract but he probably wouldn't bring a ton back which is okay if all you're looking for is cap space. I doubt Walker takes that kind of term or money; I imagine he's looking for something closer to $5Mx5.

I don't give two craps about what Kakko becomes; the question was asked and answered. You're the one getting offended by the responses. For every Nuke and Tage (who wasn't even a top-10 pick) there are countless others that either become role-players or never really make it in the NHL. Turcotte hasn't done anything in the NHL so, yeah, what of it? I get it, you like your guy and hope he turns out to be a good player but he may end up being a bust by your own definition. Take it personally if you want but it doesn't change that so, far, Kakko hasn't accomplished much as an NHL player.

He busted in Dallas then had to work his way back up as a reclamation project. It's possible Kakko finds his game with the Rangers but time is running out.
