Chicago Blackhawks signed Nick Foligno (2 Years / $4,500,000 AAV)
Immovable contract. I would go as far as to say that no team in the NHL would take Nick Foligno, even at 50% retention. Is he a leadership guy? Absolutely. But that is his singular job within the organization. He's not a great point producer, he is not a great defensive player, he is an off ice presence at that's it. Which, isn't bad to sign. But it is bad to give up $4.5mil at a time where expensive, quality players are going to be readily available this year and next. Waste of cap space.

Philadelphia Flyers signed Aleksei Kolosov (3 Years / $925,000 AAV)
with the bit of Fedotov business, this is an incredibly good move by Briere and Philly. guy has solid numbers and looks to be worth the maximum ELC. i would almost wager to say they've managed to make an improvement to their goaltending prospect situation given everything going on.
this does lead me to have more concerns about the drafting of Matvei Michkov. with the KHL and NHL now seemingly willing to break contracts with the other despite the dissolution of the ruling being over a year ago, i have concerns for not just Michkov and Philly, but almost any team drafting out of the KHL. this is likely going to spark an unavoidable political issue for the NHL despite their desperate attempts to remain openly apolitical.

Vancouver Canucks signed Nils Höglander (2 Years / $1,100,000 AAV)
during his career high 27 point season, he had a bigger role, working his way into the middle 6 alongside other budding prospects like Petterson and Hughes so he got sort of left to the wayside as they prospered. with his dip in production the last 2 years, i expected this to be about an $850,000 contract but am happy to see Vancouver was willing to keep him in the organization. i don't assume he will even finish this contract in VAN but, i do think he's stil developing and will be a solid and consistent middle 6 player in the NHL.

Pittsburgh Penguins signed Andreas Johnsson (1 Year / $800,000 AAV)
hoping Johnsson can bounce back after getting buried in the minors on a well built NJD team. i think with the right linemates, he can put up another 30-40 point season. cheap, short, no risk. good deal by Dubas for a bottom 6 NHL player or, a top 6 AHL player. good deal for both i think, barring an NMC as all details aren't confirmed yet.

Montreal Canadiens signed Rafaël Harvey-Pinard (2 Years / $1,100,000 AAV)
with his growing offensive output, i think this contract will look even better next season, wherein i won't be surprised by his next cap-hit. safe on all accounts, Ken Hughes has done wonders this off-season, especially looking at the Caulfied contract. the Habs will look great next season, all with attractive and fairly cheap salaries.

Washington Capitals signed Martin Fehérváry (3 Years / $2,675,000 AAV)
solid contract for a young player with a lot of upside & continual progress. great price to lock down at the very least a middle pairing defenceman for a couple years. easy to move when the time comes, all around a great contract for a young & developing player.

Montreal Canadiens signed Lias Andersson (1 Year / $775,000 AAV)
the best signings of the off-season have all looked like this— short, safe, and cheap. new teams present new opportunities and also new struggles so, i expect to see Anderson continue to progress into a potential bottom 6 regular in the NHL or a great top 6 in the AHL.

Calgary Flames signed Martin Pospisil (1 Year / $775,000 AAV)
i don't mind the contract as he's young and could still grow his game, but to sign Popisil but not pursuing Phillips seems like a step in the wrong direction for the Wranglers.

Calgary Flames signed Dryden Hunt (2 Years / $775,000 AAV)
Wranglers signing, no doubt, but as someone invested in the success of that team, I can't help but say this is a solid signing for Conroy. little NHL turnover but, seems to be a great AHL presence, putting up fairly decent numbers in the small sample size.

great pickup by WSH for an eventual bottom 6 guy. good deal to get him into the Caps system. guy was a stud for the Wranglers and i expect to see him succeed going forward as a depth player with special teams potential.

Ottawa Senators signed Joonas Korpisalo (5 Years / $4,000,000 AAV)
definitely a fan of Korpisalo, like a lot of the goaltenders filtered through CBJ in the past few years, he's had a lot of ups and downs. i think with the right team in front of him, he's got starter potential but as it stands right now, this is a little rich and a little long.
i honestly see this contract being bought out in year 3 or 4 if he posts a sub-.900 SV% or over a 3.00 GAA in the front half of the contract. this contract is comparable to the Varlamov signing, but i think its a little better on account of Korpi's age and potential ceiling.

Detroit Red Wings signed J.T. Compher (5 Years / $5,100,000 AAV)
while Compher has no doubt shown signs of improvement as his COL contract has progressed, i find the term to be of possible concern. if he continues to progress into the consistent top 6 player he's being paid to be, this will be a good value contract in 3 years. if perhaps the 52 point career high is his plateau though, not so much. time will tell but, i would be wary for going for tenure here instead of a bridge deal for his first time playing out of COL.

Thread:
New York Islanders signed Semyon Varlamov (4 Years / $2,750,000 AAV)
i am apparently in the minority over NYI's signings today but nevertheless.
Varlamov is an evergreen, ever consistent goaltender who is serviceable as a starter (given the right defence) and a backup. solid value and tenure with trade potential in a couple years if he trails off.
personally a fan of the low cost/longer tenure deals for NYI going forward.

Toronto Maple Leafs signed John Klingberg (1 Year / $4,150,000 AAV)
smart move, good money, short deal. helps bolster the defence further with the assumed continued loss of Muzzin to the LTIR. Klingberg, with the right D-partner could have a great return to form in TOR.

Toronto Maple Leafs signed Maxime Lajoie (1 Year / $775,000 AAV)
young and has some upside. with no tenure, its a safe deal. but to be quite frank, this seems more like an AHL signing than an NHL one. fair and fine deal with little risk and potential value in an injury situation.

New York Islanders signed Pierre Engvall (7 Years / $3,000,000 AAV)
i may be an outlier in this but, i really like this contract. i feel like Engvall is going to continue to progress into a solid forward and NYI has a fairly decent team. he'll slot anywhere in the bottom 6 and be a consistent presence as a forward. 3M is easy to flip, no matter the term. like Engvall and like the signing a lot.

Pittsburgh Penguins signed Tristan Jarry (5 Years / $5,375,000 AAV)
an unfortunate overpay with considerable term. flashes of greatness have been his saving grace but his consistency and continued health are a concern. worried this will stand up as a hard to move signing, akin to that of Martin Jones in SJ and John Quick in LA.

Pittsburgh Penguins signed Alex Nedeljkovic (1 Year / $1,500,000 AAV)
a Jarry/Ned tandem doesn't sound all that bad to me if i'm being entirely honest. i imagine they put up decent regular season numbers, i'd just be concerned about the tandem going deep in the playoffs.

Carolina Hurricanes signed Frederik Andersen (2 Years / $3,400,000 AAV)
their cap situation is pretty solid as of right now. i think this is a smart signing for Carolina because, if yer concerned about Freddie getting hurt, you have an ever reliable Raanta. and with Kotchetkov signed for $2.0x2, i figure that running three goalies is a safe plan. this team is fairly stacked as it is already and 3 good goalies makes them even scarier.

Minnesota Wild signed Vinni Lettieri (2 Years / $775,000 AAV)

Arizona Coyotes signed Nick Bjugstad (2 Years / $2,100,000 AAV)
wouldn't be a good signing on every team but, given the cap situation and his brief success while playing in Arizona prior, i think this is a solid signing for the Coyotes, all while being easy to move on a retained deal if it comes to it. good depth for a couple years in a building Arizona team.
