Opening night
It going to be a bad time if Lyubushkin is the top pair guy. He is best served as a guy who plays 17-19 minutes a night. My best guess is they play him as a defensive support for Power. Dahlin showed last season he is just as comfortable on the off wing. I expect the pairings to be Samuelsson/Dahlin Power/Lyubushkin Bryson/Jokiharju.

If Ullmark wants to waive (I bet he would) you could probably get Ullmark for MUCH less. Like maybe a 5th or 6th</div></div>
Never said I agreed with the compensation. Just arguing the fact that he wouldn't waive to come back.

Blow it up for Bedard
That is a big over pay in my eyes for the Sabres to add a fringe 1C/very good 2C like PLD. He is an RFA with Arb. rights. There is a return to be had for WPG, but not that big of a return.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Joey_mar_cur</b></div><div>as far as that habs trade goes your value is pretty close to fair, nobody would flip **** if that was all it was. unfortunately, Montreal is a team without a true far and away #1 defenceman that would still be so on most of the teams in the league, think Hedman, makar, fox, Slavin, Hamilton, Ekblad, ETC. Romanov is the closest thing we have to that, he's young and plays both LD & RD, and showed massive improvement under MSL even becoming our clear-cut best blueliner. under this context, he is probably if not definitely a top-three piece for this team in terms of value, right next to 14 and 22. trading for him would almost definitely have to be an overpay just because he is really all that we have right now.</div></div>
Appreciate the honest detailed response. Makes a ton of sense why the idea of the trade would ruffle some feathers then.
Out of curiosity, how much more would it take? I'm not sure from a Sabres perspective it would make much sense to add much more, but what would a trade from your perspective have to look like?

You can buy low on Petry, not on Romanov</div></div>
In my eyes, these posts are great learning opportunities for people like myself who aren't always well versed on other teams.
I know he was had been in the trade rumor mill in previous offseasons , as recently as the Eichel sweepstakes. Figured a change of scenery swap for him and MIttlestadt made sense, and Allen made for a good cap relief option to even out the trade.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>MP55</b></div><div>Romanov is a young up and coming top 4 d man who really took a step forward and improved when MSL took over, playing the most minutes out of any Hab. Allen is one of the better backups in the league and will be important to the Habs next year when price needs his workload managed. He will be an integral part in keeping Primeau in the ahl so he can have some consistency and build off this insane playoff he’s having. We’re not giving both up for a change of scenery player who has shown nothing in the nhl so far.</div></div>
My thought was that they are not in a very good cap situation currently. The MTL media and fan base are not going to be happy to hear "rebuild" so they will need to clear some space for a on the fly rebuild/retool.
This may be way off base, but was the basic concept behind this trade.

1) His underlying numbers have been on an up swing the last two seasons.
2) He would make for a great mentor/partner for Power
3) Another veteran to add to the room
4) Sabres have been said to be making him and Campbell there top targets in FA
5) I have him at 4x2. Any more term than that I think is risky. Money is no issue for the Sabres over the next two seasons, plus they have to hit the floor.

To answer your question though, if you want him you're going to have to give up guys like Krebs or Cozens instead of Johnson. Mittlestadt has concerning injury history, and isn't at Dubois level.</div></div>
They bring up the idea due to Friedman mentioning some uncertainty between player and team. You're probably correct and the ultimately sign him.
I would think that 9oa is close to filling the gap between Mitts and Dubois.
They also proposed a counter offer trade of Cozens, Johnson and the Florida pick. Not sure if that moves the needle for you in either direction.

Wild Card Darlings
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Lenny54</b></div><div>Not_Not_Batman My question is why are you trading Ryan Johnson? Last year many Sabres ACGM's were trading Samuelsson but not anymore. Just bc he is a LHD doesn't mean we trade him. Some have said he does slide to the right side at times without a problem. He can be brought along at a slower pace and develop in Rochester. I keep the kid till we see what we have for at least a season or 2 to see what we have.</div></div>
He has to be signed by next spring. I Imagine if he doesn't get a crack at the big club next season then he will just hold out and go the college UFA route. He is not playing over Dahlin, Powers or Samuelsson on the left and He would be a long shot to be the 3rd guy on the right. He is very much expendable with all the LD prospects that we have, so he makes the most sense to leverage in a trade to get stronger up front. Samuelsson was the guy last season because everyone believed that Johnson was ahead of him on the depth chart in regards to development.

Yeah, I would not be happy to see them give that term to Kadri and Hertl. No need to waste that cap space and also push Quinn & Petreka back to the AHL for another season.

I think Tage has cemented himself as a C for this team. Arttu might find himself getting the Kahun treatment come RFA season, so you don't need to push one of Mitts, Tage or Cozens to the wing with your current roster construction. I also imagine if Krebs, Quinn and to some extent Petreka, continue tearing up the AHL this season, they will all but be locks for the big club next season.

I am all for the Arizona trade. Probably a bit of an overpayment, you could likely get him for just the 1st, but I agree that there is a log jam on the left side of the defense so understand why you added him.
