Whether you can get both prospects.. not sure. May be one or the other. I do feel kings are in a bit of win now given Doughty and kops age.
I know the canes were the other team on EKs list, but I doubt they do that.</div></div>
The Hurricanes wouldn't trade for EK but we would trade for Ned if your offering... he helps temporarily fixes our goaltending problems

Good thought up until their early 30s, pushing the horse a little too hard at their age unfortunately. I anticipate that in '25 and even more in '26, a key piece will be adding a great scoring 3C to keep Geno and Sid to 17 mins a night instead of 19

So yeah, play them a lot</div></div>
I disagree that keeping them together is for the best. The Pens have been a one-line team for a couple weeks. Spread the wealth a little. What's the point of having the best line in the league if the rest isn't contributing? Geno and Smith are in a cold streak right now. I thought swapping Smith and Rust last night would spark the two of them, but I guess not.
And I don't want to play the top line too much. At that age, they can't be relied on for everything. I don't want to over work them now and then have them fall off down the stretch.

I do not know how Reirden still has a job. I think a culture change needs to happen. New coaches is an easy way to do that, although right or wrong I think Sully is safe for now.
I just cant see a full rebuild while Sid is here. If he asks out it changes everything

Adding Risto And Tanev
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Pens3lieve</b></div><div>completely agree...
i will say if guys become available from requesting trades or stuff like that teams like the leafs you'd think would be all over it like Barrie/NSH (doubt they want to bring him back) or Broberg/EDM
idk what Tre is thinking...
pens fan here btw but live in TOR so i hear alot by default lol</div></div>
Broberg might be worth considering for the short-term as a band-aid solution if it costs like an Alex Steeves to acquire him + a 3rd but I don't think Holland would be too keen on selling him for cheap, especially not to a Canadian team or a contender. I would imagine the Oilers are interested in more doing something like Broberg+ for Ferraro in SJ.
Speaking of Ferraro, that's probably a guy the Leafs are better off spending a 1st or significant cap on. Barrie is not the guy since he's going to require that PP1 spot to produce, he needs to be able to produce 5v5 as well but also be open to the possibility of playing on PP2. The whole ordeal in NSH seems like he wouldn't be okay with that. He's also not good at defense either and doesn't bring the size (Ferraro plays bigger than his size at least) that Treliving wants to add to the blueline so he won't be a target. I think the Leafs are better off relying on Timmins for offense (perhaps it comes with time especially if he gets a solid defensive partner like Ferraro) than to hope on Risto or Barrie to regain form.

Adding Risto And Tanev
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Pens3lieve</b></div><div>why do i feel like these players wouldn't make the team substantially better???
tanev and risto have had pretty bad advanced stats for years and in the situation suggested, they would be with the leafs for a few years.... not sure if acquiring a couple aging D with red flags in their metrics is the way to push the leafs over the top.....
treliving seems like the type to make those moves... but i don't think that's the best path forward...</div></div>
That's all true. There are better and younger players, but are they available? Do the Leafs have the assets? And are they willing to pay it?
A young top 4 RD will require shipping out Knies and a 1st, and the Leafs don't want to do that. And they don't have other prospects and chips to trade with. So they'll have to add aging veterans and guys like Risto who are not as coveted around the league, making them cheaper to trade for.

Part 2 Pens Miss Playoffs Offseason Path Forward
Nylander isn't signing with Pitt. He can get equivalent or more from other teams that are recent playoff contenders/up and coming teams.
As a Sharks fan, this would be very exciting since they'll likely be worse next year than this year and having that unprotected first would be awesome

I do agree, but I think if we sell this TDL then we rebuild this offseason. Our chances will be worse and worse every year from here on out. If we aren't competitive this year don't see why management would think next year would be better

Oh I don't doubt Petty's status as a legit 1st pairing guys. He's having another phenomenal year.
I just question what this year and the next 1-2 seasons hold.... The only real prospects the pens have right now are Yager and Pickering (maybe Poulin, but I'd like to see him have time this season in the NHL).
I can't see Yager being on the team until the 2025/26 season (maybe he gets a taste late next season assuming he's in the A). Pickering i'd guess the same for.
With such a lack of prospect depth I'm curious to see what Dubas does in that 1-2 season period. He's been honest about wanting to compete while restocking. So that to me says Pickering/Yager aren't moving and most likely neither is a 1st unless it benefits the tteam now and long term.
If the cap is $87.7M next season they'll have about $18-19M in space as things stand today i think, but if they don't make drastic moves this year that's some nice money to play with as they'd need a backup, 4 forwards and 2 defenseman (6/7th guy)

The Canucks have already stated that they don't plan on moving their 1st rounder, which means I doubt they would move it just to offload a player on an expiring contract who is playing ~18-20 minutes per night for them and is quite useful when put in the right situations. Is he overpaid? Yeah. Is he worth trading a high pick to dump cap at this point, not unless the return coming back tangibly upgrades the team.

shocking to no one, jeff carter declines. (plus no one wants him even at 50%)
Kings would need to move cap somehow, whether that's a player to the penguins, or a 3rd team they have basically no cap space. Even then they'd probably need a 3rd team to retain 1.5M on Jake.
The penguins are going to possibly be in a huge bind IF they become sellers this season.
Only 5 teams have $3M+ in cap space at the moment (CBJ, NSH, BUF, ANA, CHI) and I can't see any of them being buyers at the deadline on rentals.
If the pens sell they're going to need buyers in a playoff hunt to have significant cap on LTIR.
Jake, Pettersson and Ned will be your big three, any depth guy on final year as mentioned.
It's almost impossible to speculate on anything at this point with how tight most the divisions are and with how little cap space teams have.
