They can look to sign wings that can score in UFA using Landy's money. Or if they're trading, Taylor Hall should be available for less than this and he has two years left. Guentzel is a nice player but the Avs can't afford to part with premium assets for rentals.</div></div>
Idk about that. I’d take newhook and a 1st for Jake tbh that seems fair and the more you look at it a 1yr rental makes sense for Colorado. Landeskog out for the year. Nichushkins future uncertain beyond mackinnon and rantanen where do the goals come from? After next season you add back landys cap hit AND mackinnons doubles in value

This is interesting. I like the idea of newhook and Colorado would be a fit in terms of a trade partner for Jake. I like boeser but I really don’t want anything to do with myers. I just can’t get behind Jarry/desmith again. It’s been proven not to work

I completely agree with trading Jake and using that money to get better elsewhere, including defensively and in goal. Use that asset to become a well-rounded team and improve areas of weakness. You'll have enough goals. I'm a big fan of how this team looks outside of having Ruutta on the roster. You likely can't find a partner for Petry so he has to play.</div></div>
Thanks. Yeah I’m torn on Petry vs Rutta. Part of me thinks if you put him with someone like Smith or Joseph he gives a nice defensive presence to that pairing and I felt rutta gets somewhat unfairly assessed because he spent a lot of last year paired with the unmitigated disaster that was 2022 Brian Dumoulin. Petry was decent at the start but after the all star game he was absolutely brutal. Maybe let them play it out and see who sucks less.

He helps us win now, and Sid and Geno Deserve that, cough of the money pay him what he wants IDGAF because he is our last big FA for awhile and I think we should be in win now mode until Sid says it ok to rebuild, we owe him that. When Sid says its ok to rebuild it doesn't matter what Guentzle is making because we're just gonna retain half, trade him, and finnish dead last for 3-5 years anyway</div></div>
Yeah that’s fair. Brings me to another point I’ve debated on here which is the assumption that trading guentzel makes us worse. And in a vacuum it does. But if you trade Jake and use the added cap space to strengthen the bottom six, goalie, and or defense is the team really worse. I replaced Zucker and guentzel with two players who are younger and cheaper. Jake/zucker had 63 goals between them. Id argue as long as Sid and geno continue to produce elite play these guys produce at a similar clip. Maybe not 60 but 50 easy. Then you compare the bottom 6 to last years and it’s night and day. To me this team is better than last years. I don’t see how you can make enough meaningful changes to the bottom 6 defense and goalie without moving Jake.

Yeah I think that’s key. Barbashev would be a good fit with him. As far as trading Jake I’ve had this debate with plenty of ACGMs here but to me it comes down to are you gonna resign him? If yes, then fine though I don’t necessarily think that’s smart for the money he will command. If not then use him to get pieces that fill one of the million other holes in this organization (lack of prospect pool, lack of bottom six, lack of goaltending, etc.) Barbashev is cheaper younger and scores 20+ in his sleep on Sid’s wing.

Unpopular opinion here but I’m not getting why people are beating down the door to trade rutta. His numbers last year weren’t pretty but he seemed to constantly be the victim of a horrendous partner whether that was Dumoulin or second half Jeff Petry. You put him next to someone like Ty smith you might have something decent there. I wouldn’t give up assets just to move him.

Man I hope you’re wrong…but I see where you’re coming from here. Have to hope FSG is more ambitious than this (and based on what they’ve done with Liverpool they are) because what you have here is not a playoff team. Carter and granlund in the lineup, Jarry and desmith back in the goal. The defense remains largely the same. This team likely gets Sullivan fired mid season.

It pains me to say but we’re stuck with carter. Can’t buy him out because the contract was signed over age 35 and no gm in their right mind would trade for him AND he has a no movement clause (Thanks Ron!). He’s either got to be in the lineup or (preferably) in the press box but his cap hit stays with this team.

I would say it's a little early on Blomqvist - most likely needs at least some playing time in the AHL. You do have some cap room to throw another mil(2.5 total) at a better backup goalie. Plus Mikkola isn't getting close to that AAV so you'd have extra cap space there as well. Honestly I'd just scrap the Mikkola signing completely unless you are able to get rid of Rutta - just seems like a waste of money to have Rutta on the bench. Mikkola is in no way better than Petry - not even close. It's a solid roster. I think if you didn't sign Mikkola and signed a guy like Zucker instead it would probably be better. Just my thoughts</div></div>
Lol I did edit it you made a good point. And you’re right with landeskog going down they do probably keep compher. Maybe we get a guy like domi. I’ve advocated signing him on prior ACGMs and gotten heat for it. Outside of that trade - you most likely underpaid Bunting and Compher - and that Mikkola contract is very bad. Way overpaid. You also can't put Carter on the Taxi Squad</div></div>
Yep you’re right fixed that on Carter. And probably right on bunting and compher, maybe we don’t need Jones and we promote blomqvist.
Regarding mikkola maybe it’s overpaying but I think he’s underrated. Big, can play top 4 minutes, good defensively. I like his game. And he’s one of the youngest defensemen available even if you give term hell be 31 at the end of that contract. Maybe 4 is too much but I think the pens would benefit from a player like him. Better than Petry at least and I don’t think we afford the likes of graves or gavrikov

I actually like this. Desmith plus picks could work for Boston and Pit. Only caveat is I don’t love the defense. I’m not sold on Gustafsson, and I think you’re underpaying Barbashev and Zucker. I think more likely we don’t keep Zucker and promote nylander to that role. Would prefer mikkola. And get Ty smith in there as well

Im still on the trade Guentzel train
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Haymaker26</b></div><div>1. This team is only a few seasons away from rebuilding with or without Jake. So we can either keep him and get the most out of what time we until then, or we can trade him and not get the most out of him. No amalgamation of players or picks that we can get for him will have the same immediate on-ice impact as a sniper of Jake's caliber. If we trade him, it's a telltale sign of the Pens giving up on competing with Sid, Geno, and Tanger. FSG isn't doing that.
2. You're doubting the future goal scoring ability of a player who's perenially at a 35-40 goal pace. He's top 10 in 5v5 goals in the last 3 years, league-wide. And he's been PPG in games where he's played but Crosby hasn't. Maybe you're right and he will slow down some. But to the degree you claim? I'll believe it when I see it.
3. Why should I care when Jake's contract will be awful after the Big 3 are gone? The team will be just as bad by that point. We'll be the type of team taking on cap dumps and selling our talent by the time his contract becomes an issue.
4. This year's UFA class is pretty poor. The only real top 6 options in free agency to slot in on LW are Bunting and Bertuzzi. Both guys who'll command something between $5M and $6M, so they won't even be cheaper next season than Guentzel will be. And then the cap is going to start going up more and more.
It's as simple as this: there is no way to trade Jake without getting immediately worse. We are not tearing it down yet, so getting immediately worse makes no sense.</div></div>
That’s all fair and reasonable. I like to think there’s some middle ground that can be achieved between going all in and becoming the 2020s Blackhawks.
And while I see your point on Jake’s scoring and the available alternatives, both bring more than just goals to the table in terms of physicality versatility. Put either of them with Crosby they score 20 in their sleep, maybe 30. 7 of Jake’s 36 goals were empty netters. Interpret that how you want. Finally, you say trading Jake makes us immediately worse. I’m not so sure. If you can replace Jake on the LW with someone who scores at least 20 goals and you use the return to improve the bottom 6 (which is awful, and was possibly the main reason the pens missed the playoffs) by as little as 10 goals, and get a second 1st in a very deep draft I’d argue you’ve made the team better at the expense of getting likely 1 year of guentzel and losing him for nothing thereafter

If we intend to compete, no return will have the same impact he has. And it's pretty clear FSG intends to compete.
That's the end of that discussion.</div></div>
Not sure if I agree with that. Weve had this debate on here before. The pens need to get younger and faster and improve the bottom 6. Ive said on here also that I think jake gets a 7x7M type deal, and that might even be lowball. Kadri got 7x7M and hes never been a ppg player until his age 31 season last year. Jake doesnt strike me as the type of player whos going to score 30 a season into his mid 30s without a top center next to him and Sid/Geno will be gone by that point, which will make that contract potentially really bad in a few years. If you trade him to a team capable of resigning him he gets at least a middle 6 NHLer or prospect and a 1st. If you can get a solid 3C and a 1st Id take it. use the cap space to add someone younger cheaper and more physical at LW i think it makes us deeper and more competitive. Goal scoring from the top 6 wont be the issue with this team it will be defense, bottom 6 and goaltending.

Rebuild or not
I think it’s hard to justify “tanking” when Crosby and Malkin both are putting up point per game seasons on bargain contracts (relative to their production) Letang played at an elite level this season as well. They certainly weren’t the cause for the failure. On top of that tanking involves moving major pieces of the core who all have some version of no movement clause, so it’s not even feasible.
If you surround the core with a supporting cast with more speed and physicality, they should still in theory compete if Sid Geno and Letang play at a level comparable to last year. Unfortunately that requires a thorough undoing of basically everything Hextall did as gm which is going to be a major undertaking.
You have to get faster and younger and more physical. Agree with bunting and crouse. I think we can’t afford to give guentzel the 7x7 he’s gonna want at age 30. He should fetch an nhler a prospect and a 1st. The money zucker would cost would be better served going towards one or two younger guys to add speed and grit to the bottom six and bumping nylander to the top 6. And we have to fix the goaltending. I’ve seen Hill Korpisalo Nedelkjovic or combos of those floated which is fine, but Jarry cannot be trusted especially not for what he wants. You’re probably stuck with the Jeff’s, but at least buyout granlund and you have some space to maneuver.

Yeah the problem is he’s gonna command upwards of a 7x7 type of deal. He turns 30 soon and where the pens are as an organization it’s just not the time to give that type of contract out especially with Crosby and Malkin having maybe 1-2 more years of elite play realistically. Need to get younger and add picks and prospects to the pool. Return similar to the Horvat trade (NHLer, prospect, 1st) would be reasonable and serve the organization well
