What kind of package is Winnipeg looking for
Jets fan here checking in:
The ask for Hellebuyck is simple, and per the Athletic, not even your best assets.
Simon Nemec is your 4th best prospect per Wheeler at the Athletic.
Connor Hellebuyck instantly makes you *the* Stanley Cup Favourite, and the assets returned in the deal should merit that consideration.
Right now, the Jets' roster is *significantly* better than last year's at this time, and last year's roster was 1st in the west in January. That the wheels fell off after that point has a lot to do with why Wheeler isnt with the team anymore, but basically from last year's opening day roster, we've replaced Dubois, Wheeler and a bunch of AHLers with Vilardi, Namestnikov, Niederreiter, Iafallo and Kupari. *On Paper* this is the deepest Jets roster I've seen in a long time, and should absolutely contend in the central.
So, with this in consideration, you're not actually trading for Hellebuyck, you're trading for several million dollars of playoff revenue guaranteed if we keep Hellebuyck. It's obvious that it would be better for the Jets Long-term to trade Hellebuyck, but people need to disabuse themselves of the concept that the Jets are somehow desperate to trade him.

wont work but pinto to boston
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>RC_82</b></div><div>why wouldn't Boston just offer sheet him? I feel like they could make a trade for their second round pick and then offer like 3 mil. don't think sens can match that</div></div>
Pinto is a 10.2(c) RFA, with 2 accrued professional season, not 3. Therefore, ineligible for offer sheet.
Sens could easily match a 3m offer sheet (dump Joseph/Brannstrom/Kubalik)
Want Pinto? Requires massive overpay. This trade proposal ain't it.

who knows at this point
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>RC_82</b></div><div>I think i understand your question?
because in a trade, the other team can pay another team to save cap (see EK trade). a team would pay a third party team to retain for this year and then deal with the nylander extension in the offseason.
it saves the leafs cap taking 7 mil of the team and then maybe taking a 4 million dollar player back plus picks and prospects.</div></div>
Here's the part I don't get. Why ae so many worried about Nylander's extension. There are over 100 upcoming NHL UFAs next summer. The Leafs have eight. ..Nylander, Bertuzzi, Domi, Samsonov, , Lafferty Klingberg and Giordano and Brodie. There certainly isn't any urgency for the Leafs sign or trade Nylander. Just like there probably isn't any urgency for another time to acquire Nylander.
Now, if the Leafs could trade Nylander for a competent NHL Dman, and get some cap relief to fill the roster with 22 players, yeah I see that trade. But it's getting beyond silliness to expect to trade Nylander thinking an extension is in place which would sweeten the return for Nylander
Just going be this post.....Leafs and so many other teams have players with M NTCs or NTCs. Trading them to team with cap is nearly impossible.

There is not a world in which any of those players get traded for Hellebuyck

This isn't even close for Pesce. Brodie is just a straight downgrade, and he'd be the 4th best LHD on the roster.

No need for jones, we have Gio way better.
I’d take domi without trading kerfoot because I don’t think leaf’s are going to put knies into the playoffs, he’s just a college player.

Kyle Dubas Heisenberg arc
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>RC_82</b></div><div>I would say the same but I also would have said the leafs wouldn't be able to make the moves they've made without parting with some top prospects, yet here we are...
That being said, I don't think they would retain 50%, but they would probably retain 1.5M as they need to hit the cap floor due to being such a poverty franchise. The market for Chychrun would also have to dry up.</div></div>
Unless they are really high on Robertson which is possible, I don't see any incentive for them doing any retention unless they are getting someone that they would really like that would presumably be Knies. Maybe they do something like 800k to 1m retention for the above package if it interests them (assuming the market for him dries up). If they can get it done as presented here, then that would be some very tidy business by Dubas. Maybe it would be possible if they flip Holl for an asset as well.

making the money work value flexible Sens retainampflip ROR to leafs
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>palhal</b></div><div>Big shut down guys.....well you've exchanged Sandin and Parayko who have similar offensive numbers but the difference in plus/minus is 22 favouring Sandin. So who is the shutdown guy?</div></div>
:tearsofjoy
Are you actually being serious with this right now? You ask a lot of easy questions you already know the answer to but won't admit for some reason. Pair Sandin with Nick "the human disaster movie" Leddy and them make him play 24 hardest possible minutes instead of a floppy 18. We can discuss mistakes committed this season and whatnot, but as far as total volume of things stopped, Parayko still ranks top 20 among all NHL D-man for sure, if not actually top 10. Oh and, "offense" doesn't just means points. You guys acting like he's some work out slob would all be hailing him for Norris (a ka overcompensating the other way) if he ever showed up in a Leafs sweater.

Leafs have absolutely no desire to have Parayko for seven full seasons at his age and cap.
Yes the trade would help the Leafs for this season, but Leafs are much better off with 1.4m Sandin and 5.1m in cap next season (and the two picks)

Thread:
Just based on Tweets of rumors and what insiders have talked about
The longer term cap ramifications that using LTIR has on you is not worth if you don't HAVE to be in LTIR. You risk the performance bonuses getting added to next season's cap, your day-to-day roster management is a nightmare if you were already close to the cap, and it's additional money you have to spend even if the player is mostly insured. The golden scenario is to never use any of it ever- not one dollar or ten million dollars.
HOWEVER, if you already have an LTIR contract then it can make sense to acquire other LTIR contracts to gain maximum flexibility with the cap, knowing that you're going to be hit with those drawbacks regardless.
The Leafs already had Horton last year so they knew those were going to be issues they were going to have to work around, and they had an RFA who could force an in-season signing, which would amplify the cap hit of that signing. (For example, Nylander's cap hit is a shade under seven but his cap hit for the half year he played after he signed was just over ten). If Marner had done the same thing, they couldn't have afforded him for the first year unless they could go over the cap. So it made sense to acquire Clarkson so that they could get hit with the drawback but be able to operate at ten million above the cap instead of just four or whatever Horton's cap hit was. But now those contracts are gone, and those RFA contracts aren't an issue, so it doesn't make sense to acquire MORE LTIR space if you do not have to because the drawbacks can make life very hard for management both today and in following years.

It's pretty common knowledge at this point that typical NHL players peak is age 23 - 27.
Leafs will be looking elsewhere to fill that spot.
