So did Richards. There's no way the NHLPA will allow the termination to stand without compensation because it will set a precedent to allow future terminations.

Kane is exactly what we needed this season, the problem is if we sign him we're gonna be recreating the depth holes we just fixed. We may not need a replacement for Kassian if Kane comes because Niemelainen could easily be one of the best hitters in the league, but he needs to improve on his mobility. I hope he did.</div></div>
By replacement I mean a body to fill his position in the 23 man roster, could be an ELC, a player already on the team, or a FA signing.

GMs didn't like it because it essentially gave the Kings a free pass out of their cap woes at the time.
An arbiter isn't in the business of awarding an outcome that neither party wants. They listen to both parties asks, and settle somewhere in the middle. Kane wants 100% of the money he is owed, but wants to remain a UFA. San Jose wants to be rid of his contract without any cap ramifications or having to pay anything. Both sides agree the player should be a UFA this summer. The only thing left to argue about is how much money Kane will get from San Jose.</div></div>
reasonable but if the party (Kane) violated clauses in his contract and NHL players conduct policy like he did he might have no choice but to rule in favor of the sharks.
we will see this is just one hypothetical outcome to consider.

Barrie had more points than pulock this year even when you round his games to 82 and do the calculations, barrie played 3rd pair for the last half of the year and put up better stats than the first half, replacing mayfield on pair 3 as the isles glide away from the trap

the difference is the Richards incident was a one time thing that forced the termination and NHL was against it this time it was due to repeat offenses and the NHL was in favor of the termination. have a strong belief either the contact is fully terminated for cause and Kane is given nothing. but to me if the contract is reinstated (and that is still a possibility) sharks could use that to make some lemonade from the lemon. honestly it's in Kane's best interest that the termination not be overruled because there are a few teams who might give him 7+ for 3-4 years if he hits FA.

sharks would know he has value and not buy him out, prefer to make a deal to get something even if it means retaining some. Edmonton would be able to find a Kassian replacement for around 1 mil and that would mean Kane would only cost them 3 mil a year difference from what they already have. seems like something they would do especially if McDavid wants this.

If Kane wins the appeal he would be sharks property again, kanes goal ii would think is to lose the hearing but be awarded some compensation. if the termination is overturned however his deal would be reinstated and he would be back with the sharks.

an explosive offseason
It's pointless to give away Wheeler for nothing if the Jets are retaining as they would end up paying as much or more than Wheeler's cap hit and have a worse player.
The firsts are real nice but an elite goaltender like Hellebuyck is way too hard to find. Doesn't anyone remember the Pavelec days?
Why would the Jets throw away a top pairing defenseman for a 2nd?

Fanti has good size, excellent athleticism, played in probably the toughest conference and is a fierce competitor. What a great signing. I wonder if there is a chance to nab Meyers or Livingstone, Fanti really is an awesome add given the diminishing draft picks, but any of the top NCAA FA’s would be brilliant, I know JL’s fave team are the enemy and I think there is a not much competition for him in their pipeline.
It will be interesting to see who else might be signed, Metsa?

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>SupremeOverlord14</b></div><div>I agree that Kassian and Barrie need to go, but you've significantly underestimated the return they could get. There's a good selection of teams who would be interested in a talented offensive defensemen like Barrie, and many happy to add gruff and grit with a guy who can also pass pretty well. I could see them each fetching a 3rd, and if you really wanna offload a cheap goalie one year removed from a Vezina vote (granted, this season has been very tough on him, his injury in October may have really changed him), then you could certainly get more than a 5th.</div></div>
RWs on the Arizona roster for 2022-2023 and likely to play (i.e., excluding Bryan Little):
Clayton Keller
Christian Fischer (RFA)
Travis Boyd (probably better at center)
Dylan Guenther (19-year-old rookie)
Kassian seems to me like a no-brainer for the Coyotes.
RDs on the Arizona roster for 2022-2023:
Dysin Mayo
Connor Timmins
Viktor Soderstrom (promoted)
Ty Emberson (promoted)
Looks like Tyson Barrie would be a nice fit there, too.

Manson contract seems realistic, I think theres a chance Holtby fetches in the 3 mill range because of the amount of teams who could be looking at a goalie. Also I think Evander Kane is more likely to go shorter term, probably a year or 2 at 4m

I'd be embarrassed to offer a future fifth for Tyson Barrie. Given what a stiff like Brett Kulak returned, I'd be hesitant to suggest that this year's fourth is fair. But stranger things have happened -- look what Stevie Yzerman paid for Alex Nedeljkovic.

Also, how is us giving you a third for a second fair? Then again, giving a young guy who has a much brighter future than Toews with a second round pick for a $5.25 bum (not disrespecting Toews' legacy, he's HoF for sure, but he's a bum now) is outrageous.</div></div>
1. Nobody wanted Duncan Keith ... except for Kenny Holland.
Everybody thought offloading him would take a massive deal ... except it didn't.
2. On the fairness of being given a second for a third ... you missed the part where I say "the Oilers make it to the Cup Finals".
3. Giving Caleb Jones, a young guy with a brighter future than Duncan Keith, with a conditional third for a 5.5 million bum, was outrageous.
And it happened anyway.

i think the precident was set with markstrom that is what it will take to get kuemper.
Foegele is getting a bit old to have a breakthrough season he's been consistently this for his entire career.

Just my two cents: teams that might be interested in taking Kassian off your hands are those who are undersubscribed in forwards for next season like Arizona and Nashville, rather than Columbus, who have 12 forwards (including RFAs that they almost certainly want to re-sign) on their roster plus Patrik Laine (whom they might not) plus a couple of kids they might want to promote. But that's a sensible investment for cap relief.
