Exactly, there is no incentive from the MTL side to do this trade with such unused cap space

Chances are he won’t keep this pace for too long. I’d keep him in the AHL as long as possible so he can either keep dominating or even face some adversity at some point during the season. If he can go through a slump in the AHL and learn how to find his game again after that, it will be a valuable learning experience for him to make sure he’s ready for the NHL.

That’s exactly what I’m thinking. Barron will likely be sent down to start the year just because of his contract situation and be the first call up in case of injury. They won’t want to risk losing Lindstrom or Kovy through waivers.
Maybe Wideman gets sent down, but I’d rather have him as a 8th D than one of the young guys. Barron could play top pairing minutes in Laval on a promising team, with Mailloux playing on the second pairing giving you a good 1-2 punch in the AHL.

Realistically, Beck will be sent back to junior and play in the WJC. He will have a real shot next year. Lias Andersson is one who could push for a spot this year though.

Dach
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Hawksguy81</b></div><div>I'm just not sure Harris is the type of D man the Hawks want to build around. He's not particularly gifted as an offensive player, and he's on the smaller side (under 6') and isn't particularly physical. I said the Hawks might have interest in him. Just not at the cost of Dach and/or DelMastro. Dach is probably a bottom 6 guy as an NHL'er, but he could be really good in that role. After the season DelMastro had last year, he's looking like a steal as a 4th rounder. If his development continues at the same trajectory, he's a legit top 4 NHL D man for sure. No disrespect to the Athletic, but their ratings don't necessarily reflect how the Hawks front office views a particular prospect. The Hawks are very high on DelMastro. As stated by Snowhawk above, the Hawks aren't trading away 20 y.o. prospects they are high on who still haven't played their first games as pro's for older guys - especially two guys in Ylonen and DeSmith who have no future with the Hawks. No chance the Hawks make this deal.</div></div>
But do you think starting Bedard’s first year with either Tinordi, Philipps or Kaiser as #1 LHD is a good thing? The hawks tried to surround him with quality veterans in Hall, Foligno, Perry, but that D isn’t looking good… I still think Harris would be worth it for them as he’s got a lot of experience for a young player

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Hawksguy81</b></div><div>Hawks decline instantly. They aren't giving up two highly regarded prospects for that package of spare parts. Only player Hawks might have an interest in is Harris, but not if he costs Dach OR DelMastro. DeSmith and Ylonen are of zero interest</div></div>
The Athletic has Dach and Del Mastro ranked 8 and 12 respectively in the pipeline, so although they are good prospects, they are not the team’s top prospects.
Harris is an upgrade over any LD in the club right now and could play with Jones on the top pair given the Hawks’ lack of depth at the position.
I agree Ylonen isn’t worth as much as any of those prospects, but in the trade, Harris is the better player, while Dach and Del Mastro would be #2 and 3. Ylonen and Desmith 4 and 5.
Having Korchinski and Harris as their top 2 LD would be a great foundation for the future.

Habs fans are something else 😂</div></div>
Petry had a 15-team no trade clause so right off the bat you cut the market in half. Plus, if they wanted to flip Petry, you need to find a team that has cap space for his initial cap hit. Not an easy task.
And by the way, I never mentioned Dubas retained salary by kindness.. I’m saying the exact opposite: he did it because he had to do it.

Because they had the leverage that PIT had to move him to get Karlsson. It was a pure cap move, plain and simple. MTL is in no rush to trade him so other teams have zero leverage.
Also, Petry’s cap hit is now much more reasonable.

Another Laffy to MTL ACGM
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Howie</b></div><div>Firstly Mackie is nyr depth dman not starting so Harris is not really a need.
Next Anderson is overpaid and frankly who will have a better season next year Laffy or Anderson. You mention that Anderson is better than goodrow but that's not the player he's replacing lol.
As mentioned in many agms before and here as well nyr aren't trading Laffy for a return that isn't a homerun of a return and this is more of a ground out.</div></div>
Harris is also an upgrade over Gustafsson and would be a great insurance policy if NYR can’t re-sign Lindgren.
Also, if you say that Anderson doesn’t replace Goodrow, you can’t start making a one vs one comparison with Laffy.
You say Anderson is overpaid but seem to forget I included a 1.5M$ retention so 4M$ for a 20-25G power forward is more than reasonable.
You need to take a step back and look at the trade as a whole. The Rangers would be a better team for the next two years with this package and their time is now, not in five years.

Another Laffy to MTL ACGM
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>GoofyFoFoofy</b></div><div>Off the bat this trade won't work cause Goodrow probably has all of Canada on his 15 team NTC.
Let's say he waives though. I don't like this trade from the Rangers' prospective. The value is there but none of the pieces you're sending are exciting. It's just a 1st + a lot of B prospects + a middle 6 forward who I would take Laf over. Rangers are trying to win a cup now and this won't make them better. Laf has been disappointing so far yes, but he's still put up about half a point per game in the NHL and the Rangers still view his ceiling as very high. The prospects you send over don't seem close to that ceiling, most of them maxing out as middle 6 forwards and bottom 4 dmen. Harvey-Pinard is interesting but he's also already 24.
If I were Drury I'd much rather see a trade with one A prospect and a 1st.</div></div>
The thing I would disagree with what you said is “this trade won’t make them better”.
Anderson is an upgrade over Goodrow
Harris is significantly better than Mackey
Harvey-Pinard produced more than Laffy in limited NHL time (although very unlikely he keeps this pace as I mentioned). Obviously Laffy has more value and upside but you get my point.
From my perspective, NYR get better in the short term with a much deeper lineup (plus add a B prospect in Ylonen and a first that could be top-15).
Adding a top prospect and a first does not help them in the short term so I think the only kind of deal that makes sense for NYR is something like that: quality depth players at very reasonable cap hits (Tampa Bay style trade).

MTL fans will whine about the price but imo its not too bad. Dvorak is worth nothing, hes not very good. And Petry is worth maybe a 2nd and 4th or so with retention (plz for the love of god dont try to say hes worth a lot because hes not, Habs fans) and Girard is worth around there because COL has little leverage</div></div>
Exactly - the value’s there, but do the Habs really need a LHD? Since Girard can play both sides I’d do this if I were Kent Hughes

With the Reinbacher selection and Mailloux turning pro this year, I don’t think the Habs need to make this trade. Also, Kovacevic has proven to be a serviceable, cost-effective option on the back end, so I’d rather just keep him and wait for the other young guys
