The last breath
I don’t mind the Miller trade. It’s steep but it shores up the team’s biggest need for now and the future.
I don’t know that moving Reilly, JD and a puck for Keith (the 3rds cancel out) makes them a better team this year or next. I get that $ needs to be moved out to bring Miller in but I’d rather do it in a way that doesn’t end in pating Keith for the next 2 years

Bruins Need a top 6 right winger
A Vegas trade is tough because they can’t take any $ back or else they can’t fit Eichel under the cap. The Bs can’t take on Smith’s full $ so that would mean a 3rd team would have to be brought in. Maybe DeBrusk and picks/prospects to a team like NJ who in turn takes JDs contract and maybe a bit of Smith’s as well to get everyone cap compliant.
With so many teams up tight to the cap, I’m curious to see who gets moved

Crazy how fast Garland got the Vancouver stink on him. He was one of the more popular Bs ACGM targets last year.

Is this a fair swap - Boston side
The way DeBrusk’s contract is structured screws the Bs hard on a QO. By comparison Kapanen has almost the same cap hit but his contract was front loaded with a bunch of bonuses so his QO is only like a million bucks according to CF’s calculator. JD has like the 5th highest after guys like Tkachuk, Boesser and Laine. It’s why it’s gonna be so hard to move him. He’s essentially a rental unless he scores another 20 goals in the next couple months.

Zboril is out for the year so I don’t see them moving Reilly during the season unless DeBrusk trade brings back a LD

Reality
The issue with DeBrusk is that there’s not a defined market for him. A rebuilding team with current cap space and veterans to sell probably isn’t going to want to extend him a QO approaching $5 mil so he has less value to them. A contender looking to trade one change of scenery guy for another is gonna be just as tight to the cap as the Bs so it would have to either be dollar for dollar or need a 3rd team to get picks in exchange for taking $ on.
I think that he gets moved, but I couldn’t guess where and if you told me he ends up playing for the Bs the rest of the year then walking as a UFA it wouldn’t shock me. Not likely but if Sweeney looks around and doesn’t find a deal that makes the team better this year then he may just hold on to him. It opens up a whole different can of worms but what are the other options?

Can they even trade for big name players
The thing that I try to keep in mind is that the Bruins have been contending for a solid 12 years and doing it without top picks. Other teams (Colorado, TB, PIT, Toronto) have built around top 5 picks. Those guys will always get opportunities and usually a season or two where the team is rebuilding and they get a chance to make mistakes without real consequences in the standings. The Bs have been in a Stanley Cup window for the last 5 or 6 years and have no margin for error. Cassidy (who I think is an above average coach as a whole) is in win now mode. He can’t always afford to bring young players along at a pace that’s better for the player. Unfortunately, it usually ends up hurting the player’s development.
Bringing young players along AND contending at the same time is almost impossible. That’s why everytime a young team gets eliminated early in the playoffs everyone says the the team is still “a year or two away” and older teams that succeed are usually in “win now mode.”
My two cents

If Bs can upgrade from Coyle to Coutteriere I think that they’d pay the extra 2M
Edit: just realized that SC is signed till he’s almost 40. Pass

I don’t think the Bruins are taking any contracts that go past next season unless it’s for a young and affordable player. They have a major reset coming after next year and that Hayes contract would put hard limits on what they could do.

Question for Boston Fans
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>CMcAvoy73</b></div><div>This year, no. The goalies stay.
In the offseason: swayman? Still no. Ullmark, I certainly would assume he would be on the market. He would have to waive his no trade protection, which he has in a complete capacity for years one and two of his four year deal. That said, if he think he’ll be third string, which he should think, then i assume he’ll waive.
I think a lot of people will expect a first, I think a second would be fine.</div></div>
Would you rather have picks or prospects? I’m wondering if say a player that already has some AHL time under his belt and grades out as a middle 6 or 2nd pair D might help more in the next two years before they can really reset the roster moving forward

Ullmark out
Can anyone remember a time when a player signed a multi year deal and got moved before he even finished the 1st season?
Tough to see Ullmark get moved for two reasons:
1) It’s basically Sweeney admitting that the he either A) was wrong about Rask being able to return to hockey or B) the Ullmark deal was a bad idea (if he knew Rask was coming back why not just bring in a guy on a one year deal as a place filler
2) It’s hard to sell future free agents on signing if you’ve just traded a guy 4 months into a 4 year deal. It’s why nobody ever gets delt in year 1 (short of a complete organizational collapse). Players always say how they like the stability of having term on their deals.
Anyways, between COVID and the 40 games in like 85 days the Bs have coming up they’re probably going to need all 3

Debrusk for Labanc and one more move
I don’t see Strome as a 2C on this team. Coyle, for as much as everyone (myself included) has crapped on him, has held his own at 2C. Strome at 3C could be a better fit.
As for Lebanc, I don’t really like his game, but tbh, I haven’t liked JD’s game in a while either. I think DeBrusk has a higher ceiling but I don’t see it ever happening in Boston so it’s going to be a classic two guys who need a change of scenery trade. Lebanc has some postseason experience with decent underlying playoff numbers. Anyone the Bs get back is gonna have warts

I agree, the post is more of an idea of the kind of player that the Bruins want back. I wouldn’t be surprised to see the Ducks move Rakell at the deadline for a tidy package

Future
Again, the $ is secondary. If Bergeron comes back for the same $ the Bs have plenty to sign 73 and add elsewhere. I would love it if he did come back as he is my favorite Boston athlete of all time. I also wouldn’t be surprised at all if this was his last year. With all of the injuries and concussions that he’s had at some point it just becomes too much.
But swap Bergeron for Barkov and it still means that they either keep spending $3-4 mil for guys to play 15 minutes a night on their 3rd line or throw the kids into the fire and see what happens. They tried that at LD last year and it didn’t work.
I’m totally rambling here, but this post was a question about what to expect from the next group of forwards and when we can expect it. I was really hoping to get a look at Studnika at 3C this year and some sneak peeks at Lauko and Hall. With the free agent signings they’ve done, there’s less of a chance of that happening. And maybe that’s for the best. Maybe Haula, Folino, Lazar, etc all play well and depth becomes the team’s strong suit. I hope so. There’s a reason Sweeney has an office in the Garden and I’m posting this from my deck.

if not Krajci than Eichel
Realistically, what is the market for Eichel right now? A $10 million a year player with questionable leadership skills and who needs neck surgery? What GM in their right mind would trade for him before he’s 100% healthy unless you’re getting a massive discount to assume all the risk?

Zboril and some picks then? The Flyers are getting universally roasted for what they gave up. Not knowing Nashville that well, I wasn’t sure if they would want picks/prospects or players who could slot into their lineup immediately so I went with the latter
