Roster with Tavares out
I think Marner needs to play with Matthews. Just like all the other teams the 2 best players are on the same line. ex. McDavid/Drasaitl, Marchand/Bergeron, MacKinnon/Rantannen,Benn/Seguin and so on.
GIve it a real shot. IT's not like they are running away with the league on what they have been doing. Time for change!

Roster with Tavares out
With Tavares out of the lineup we will see if Marner truly is the player some people think he is.
I have felt that Marner is a very good player but also benefited from playing with Tavares. Regardless of lines, it's time for Marner to show he can step up while his linemate is out.

Marner Signs
The Leafs have the leverage at this point, A hometown kid sitting out after turning down what everyone believes to be a fair offer would be disastrous for his personal brand. I just don't see it happening.

Who do we move
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>palhal</b></div><div>They will save a little money by having Engvall and Sandin with the Marlies (they aren't NHL ready) and replaced with Marincin or Schmaltz and Agostino.
But you're right....it's still close to 1m to be cut. Do the Leafs dare go with 21m roster? Johnsson, Kapanen would be choices to be moved.
I know the public and even NHL players think all those high end RFA signings are a good thing....for their team and the NHLPA members. But it's means some players that might be 800,000 in the NHL are making 70,000 in the AHL due to reduced roster because of cap space. Or players who want to stay on a good team get traded, Brown was cap casualty for the Leafs already.</div></div>
As a smart, hard-working guy who has taken whatever job could do the most good for the world at every step, and has never earned 70k in a year, those guys also do not have my sympathies. :)

Worth It
Interesting idea. Not too sure the Canes will be into the Marner idea though. I like the creativity. It is sounding like Marner will sign 9.5x3 which is still incredibly ridiculously high, but still manageable. They just won't be able to sign Gardiner.

Contract comparable
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>johnston3504</b></div><div>the problem is that you are looking at dollars, an actual comparable would be percentage of the cap, Pastrnak got 8.89% and nylander got 12.93%, so for the comparable it would be connor - 7,255,000 and laine - 10,537,950. this is all based on this years cap at 81.5 mil</div></div>
The 12.93% is an inflated number due to signing mid-season, the number is actually ~8.7%-9.4% depending on if you use the $6.962M he is making now or the the actual annual value over the course of the contract ($45M/6Y).
8.7%-9.4% ==> 7.09M - 7.66M

yeah i think this is off of my joke one which included a ridiculous extension-- i won't put it past the flyers tho who signed hayes to that monstrous deal.
And with Frost coming up, Hayes and Couturier signed long term Patrick could be used as a chip to bring back a top 6 forward. Definitely not wise asset management, but rangers traded Tony Amonte after two 30 goal seasons in his first two years in order to win a cup.. nothing surprises me anymore.

Follow my logic
1) The picks you are getting back for those trades are way too high. Leddy for just a 2nd, Hickey for a late 3rd maybe but you aren't getting that from VAN. Maybe throw in NYI 4th rounder and you'll get the 3rd.
2) For Ladd deal you now are missing out on a first rounder. You could throw in maybe Dal Colle or some other middling prospect to make it work most likely, not 100% aware of NYI prospects
3) Beauvillier deal is too short on cap hit but you have cap space to fix it, wont harp on this too much.
4) And most importantly, you now have 3 rookie defensemen on your blue line, and defense was the reason you guys made the playoffs this year. Does getting Marner provide you with enough offense to completely slash your defense, also with a question mark in Varlamov as your starter? Personally, with the Metro in the state that it is in now, this roster misses the playoffs year 1 for sure, and most likely in year 2 cuz you're hoping on MAJOR improvement from your young player. Already at this point you are giving away 2 top 10 picks, which if we wanna go by your 2015-2018 example would be Rantanen (Already comparable if not better than Marner) and Jost, as well as whatever first rounders you get in years 3 and 4. I like the ideas and the moves are close to even in most cases, however if you're gonna blow up your area of strength I don't think its worth it.

He should be at 2.75 for 3 years. Barely below Kapanen/Heinen/Johnsson. The only thing keeping him below is the RFA years left

Random Krug Trade
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Bcarlo25</b></div><div>K. But he's still a group 1. That's literally why he's group 1. Because he was 19 when he signed, he didn't have a year tacked on his entry deal, which is why he's a group 1. Everyone acknowledges this except a couple bad writers that don't know what they're talking about.
Evolving Wild (trash guesswork), has him at a .2% chance of signing a 1 year deal. A lot of group 1 RFAs sign 1 year deals. They have him at 6 years and 7 million. That doesn't say anything about a 2 year deal. A 2 year deal is a totally different world of contract negotiations.</div></div>
Group 1 "Literally" mean's you're still on your ELC...McAvoy is not, he is now a group 2 RFA...Where are these plethora of people who acknowledge BS? even CapFriendly doesn't as they have him as RFA coming off his ELC...Also for Evolving Wild...try scrolling over to the right a bit and see what they project salary wise for each year term.

Leafs Cap Crunch
There's no way the Leafs give in to Mitch at $11.2 x 5. The only way he gets even close to $11 mill is if he goes 8 years. You are aware that Aho just signed for $8.45 x 5, right? Marner is not worth almost $3 mill more than Aho...

If you play for the Oilers you pay 47.70% taxes, in tampa for example you'd pay 39.14%
Taking a 4M salary as an example: Playing for the Oilers you'd net 2.092 M USD after taxes, while TBL would only need to offer you a salary of 3 437 397 to net the same payout post taxes. Thats the biggest financial edge low tax teams has over high tax teams. Effectively, TBL could offer you a contract worth 500k less and it would still be a better salary

So you rather pay Marner 11,000,000 and have Marlies defense, because that all the cap space we would have left. Not to mention this would give Toronto 4 first round pick for future.

Maybe. Big ask for him to jump up to that line right away. Not to mention he is weak defensively. But they'd have to make something work, he'd probably get a crack at it that's for sure.

If you traded the first rounders you could probably end up with a similar situation on D, or maybe even Colin Miller who has more term than Faulk. Honestly I don't think it's a bad move. Upgrading the D is a no-brainer if you don't have Mitch.
How do you help replace his production though? Tavares needs a winger to stay with him and whip passes. Don't think Johnsson or Kapanen have that skillset.
