Gotcha. With a normal schedule (hopefully) and growth from our current roster we will be better but not much better. I still don’t think we will make the playoffs. We will probably fall in the 7-10 range. Still draft someone really good, just not Wright or Lambert unless we win the lottery again.

Foote is good young d-man, but his appeal is mostly due to his perceived availability.
There are better young RHD we could acquire with that pick.</div></div>
I don’t disagree. I honestly have no idea of his availability or really his cost for that matter. I feel like they have to do something with their D due to the upcoming expansion. Trading a first with johnsson which I’ve seen makes no sense for Seattle.

He wouldn’t waive to us. I like zajac coming back for 1 year for the mentor role but also his defensive acumen which I believe is better than TJ.
Ahh thanks! Had no idea.

Can still add a defenseman with the first pick. After the first few picks this draft is supposed to be pretty weak. It’s known that fitz wants to utilize the oick for a player if possible. So eating a few million for Tyler Johnson doesn’t hurt. We also don’t have him getting in the way of other players because he moves to Seattle

Offer sheets never happen but yeah that would be the preferred route.
I Figured this way it’s a 3 way deal with Seattle. TB gets help to move Johnson via us eating salary and also helps us get to the floor. Johnson goes back home and gives Seattle a proven winner and vet in the locker room. Then we get Foote for our lower first and by eating salary from Johnson it doesn’t cost anything more.

Wood is only 25 (26 next year) so you get someone to play now while also getting a first and a prospect who should be nhl ready within the next 2 years as well.
Is the value there? If you swapped would with someone else, who would you want back?

Agree to disagree.
Reinhart has averaged 60 points per game on an 82 game basis over last 3 years. He’s historically always healthy which is huge as well. He can also slot in at center and he’ll Hughes with draws which helps short term but hopefully he figures it out long term.
Wood’s value is up right now so I sell high there. They’ve been saying fitzy will use islanders pick for a proven player which I am all for. We need to put a experienced player with Hughes who has a track record of scoring . If we get someone like a reinhart then Clarke is expendable even though I like him a lot as a prospect.

Sharangovich and Kuok I think deserve decent raises. Honestly i rushed through a few of them and agree with Seney, bastian, and Jonas I overpaid.
I don’t disagree with you on Murray but again I think we have to overpay unfortunately.

We have to overpay to get a player like Dougie. Analytically speaking he is a #1. I think he’s worth the money and we will have PK off the books soon. Other than Walsh we our righty d prospects are nonexistent.

Fair chance Butcher is in Seattle next season (or traded elsewhere), so having both these guys back would be a solid move imo.</div></div>
Butcher was expendable once Ty Smith became a fixture on the team. Similar type of player but his skating is an issue with his lack of size in his own end. Unfortunate because he showed promise as a rookie.

Devils have had some lackluster defensive d-men in recent years.
So both of these guys have probably earned 2-3 year deals.
Hope devils trade one, keep the other.</div></div>
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>bhavikp27</b></div><div>I also prefer Murray but haven't seen him enough so I'm not certain. Kulikov is playing better than his average level in his career and has always been more of a defensive-minded guy unlike Murray (2W).</div></div>
Prior to the season I preferred Murray but after 30+ games, I have switched over to Kulikov. They both wont put up massive point totals (though Murray of late has been putting up respectable numbers) but they both can move the puck.
What I like about Kulikov is that he adds that physical edge than none of the Devils defenseman have right now. He is good in his own zone and is physical but also isnt a liability skating with or without the puck.

Vaak has never been the same since Boro elbowed him in the head a few years ago.</div></div>
Kulikov - I wasn't either but hes been really solid this year. I honestly would rather move Murray then him but Murray will be harder due to his cap hit. Kulikov actually wanted to come to NJ becuase he has friends/family here.
Palmieri - I'd turn that one down. I honestly dont know where Bjork fits in for us but had added him becuase it seems to be a common name that pops up.
Thanks for the insight on D prospects

Bratt has probably played more RW then left in his career. Boqvist they want to play Center which he is currently doing in the AHL. Malstev and Zacha play C or LW. Kuokkanen and wood can and currently do play both sides.
I get your point, I just think Debrusk is further along then most of those players and would be a great compliment for a player like Hughes. Especially if they move on from Palms because Foote isn’t Top 6 ready yet and neither is Holtz.

Yeah unsure about zajac, it just feels like a Lou move like with Andy.
Bruins trade I was just looking for some cap to come back. Kase is an interesting player since he’s an RFA at years end. He is always hurt which has been his major issue. However he’s typically had solid underlying analytics maybe our analytics group takes a shot.

Devils don’t make the zacha Johnsson trade. Johnsson is UFA at the end of his deal, is coming of a major surgery and was already on a down year after a really solid rookie season. Well take out chances with our controlled player who just had his best season. He may not live up to the draft and who was taken around him (super depressing) but he’s at minimum a solid 3C which is more valuable than middle 6 LW

But with the flat cap forcing alot of teams to move good players or let free agents walk, this is the time for the Devils to go out and grab a legit NHL defenseman. Not worth a crazy overpay (pls no Pietrangelo for 10Million) but they need to improve on D for the sake of all their young prospects especially Blackwood.</div></div>
Yeah I agree I just don’t want an overpay. That is one of the things that I battle with thinking about what the team should do moving forward. Trading their assets on expiring contacts like Palmieri Goose and Zajac help the team gain Future assets but most likely it hurts their development of their young forwards. They need to find a happy medium. They can’t have Jack playing wi miles wood and Simmonds (I know he’s gone but you know what I mean).
For the d though, Honestly I hope PK find himself back to being at least an average NHL defenseman and some of our prospects make strides towards being NHL ready. I am really like Cernak but I doubt the Lightning let him go.

The defense is gonna be rough for a bit. Mermis and Severson played well together at the end of the year and mueller wasn’t terrible with subban during that same time span. Mueller needs to be there to actually have someone to play PK. When Ty Smith comes up we may need to move Butcher because they play a similar type of style
Other than who we draft this year and Misyul, our top D prospects (Bahl, Okhotyuk, Smith probably back and forth) will be in Binghamton this year so they’re getting closer. Fingers crossed that we hit on the some of them.
