What would it take to get Johnny Hockey
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>palhal</b></div><div>Question is why do the Devils want to give up futures for 2 years of Gaudreau? It's not like he is going to lead them to the playoffs in the next two years (unlikely). Keep the picks and spend the cap wisely on other players.</div></div>
I don’t disagree at all was just wondering.
They were apparently in the mix for kapanen which makes more sense because he has a couple more years plus Rfa at the end of his deal but glad we did give up a first and prospect for him.
I am of the thought that if they use assets for anyone it would be players of that nature but they’re more likely to just continue to add assets by weaponizing their cap space and continue to be in the lottery for the next couple of years at least unfortunately

I get it if you don’t think palms is worth it. You can see from devils fans side, they think the return isn’t enough.
Putting that aside, I highly doubt Jarvis makes the nhl jump next year. He’s a solid player but not nhl ready. Look how Hughes struggled this year with the nhl and they’re probably around the same size and skating ability.
The only player I can see that would be nhl ready in the 15 slot is lundell (if he slides). He’s not a sexy pick but he’s produced at the pro level already and has decent size. As we know producing at the pro level in Finland and having gold size doesn’t exactly mean you are ready (see kakko).

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>mokumboi</b></div><div>Here's the problem. The Marleau deal had A) twice as much real dollar salary to be paid, B) a buyout as part of the deal that the Blues won't pay for & C) a player with a less on-ice value than Steen currently has. You'll need to adjust the deal because of alll that. Of course, it may all be irrelevant because Steen would need to go along with the trade, and I can't say that he would.</div></div>
Devils would pay the buyout not the blues so not sure what you mean. Marleau atoi the year he was traded was 16:21 and he scored 37 points. Steen was 14:02 and 17 points. I know points don’t mean everything and steen adds character and is a solid pker but I think your third point is off.
The only one I can get behind is actual dollars. But with the cap being flat when management wasn’t expecting it and being flat for the next 2 years is going to drive prices up on eating salary.

Respectfully disagree with both comments.
Steen keeps them from resigning their captain. They can can resign him after we buy him out like caps did with orpik. They need to resign Dunn too.
Nico is the next captain. I hate to say it but the team has no heart. Finished in the bottom 6 the last 2 years. If palms signed a 4 year deal I would be all for it but he’s not taking a hometown discount. He’ll want at 5-6 years and around 7 mil which we would end up doing what the flyers will do with JVR

In my eyes, we keep gusev long term instead.

I agree the bruins are one of if not the best teams. However they aren’t impervious to making bad moves.
Backes contract and Moore contracts recently were terrible
Nash trade was really bad even though it dealt with injuries but that was known.
Obviously they make more good/great moves but those are some regretful ones

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Silkysmooth42</b></div><div>Bruins reject easy
Take out Bjork and a 2nd (and the retention) and the bruins accept
Remember, Kase is still a 2nd liner with decent potential, and Palmeri is now a 1 year rental which lowers his value. Recent trade for guys of Palmeris statute has been exactly that: guy with top 6 potential and a 2nd
Edit: should back myself up:
Toffoli deal: 2nd and (tyler madden + Tim Shaller) and a conditional 4th
Andrew shaw after putting up 47 in 63 (second line numbers) (and also he wasnt just a rental): 2nd and 3rd rounder
Colin Miller (not top 6 forward, but top 4 D)(also not a rental): 2nd and 5th</div></div>
Of course the bruins would accept Kase for Palmieri.
Kase is hurt 30 games a year on average. He’s played over 60 once in his career and would have probably just eclipsed it this season. During palms 5 year stretch with the devils you could always count on him being there. 17/18 was one year he has issues and he still played more games than Kase has averaged over his career.
Palmieri is better than both of those players you mentioned and hard to compare a right d to him. Over the last 4 years Toffoli is on a 20 goal per 82 game year pace while Palmieri is at 29.
You also have to take into account the devils retaining salary. This helps the bruins retain people like Krug and chara.
I took this trade from a bruins AGM. If I were to construct one myself I would probably would have said 2021 first, studnicka and zboril and still retain half of palms salary.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>zyyyp</b></div><div>Devils moved their high 2nd round pick last year and got burned, no 2nd or 3rd the year before that, we don't have a 2nd or 3rd this year, and no 2nd in 2021... a rebuilding team selecting once in the 2nd round (at 61) across 4 years? No wonder they only have 1 elite prospect in the system. Look who they missed out on in 2019 (Hoglander, Tuomisto, Lavoie, Robertson, Fagemo, Hellison, Struble, Rees, the list goes on!) They missed out on a ton of talent last year, and there's going to be a ton of talent available in rounds 2 and 3 this year.
Yeah you're right his draft position and ranking 4 years ago do mean nothing, Nolan Patrick was ranked and drafted ahead of Heiskanen, Makar, Pettersson in 2017. Pulju's numbers in the Liiga are okay at best for a highly touted prospect, he's a '98 and he wasn't even point per game in that league. Kakko produced at almost the same rate in his draft year... 40 / 50 points in the NHL is extremely wishful thinking, it doesn't look like his game will ever translate. He might be worth taking a flyer on, but not for a 2nd round pick. No way</div></div>
They’ve had second rounders in recent history but they haven’t amounted to much at least so far.
2016 selected Bastian at 42 - bad pick
2017 selected boqvist at 36 - has talent but jury is out on him still
2019 selected okhotyuk - viewed as a reach based on talent. There were more talented people picked after like puistola and dorofeyev who passed over twice (misyul picked before them as well)
2018 was the grabner trade which I never loved.
2019 our own pick and 2020 went for subban which at the time looked like a good trade and people were saying we got him for nothing.
2021 is going back for gusev which I’m assuming you like and I agree.
At the end of the day we have 3 first round picks and Id rather the devils move a second rounder than one of those first rounders. Unless you told me we could move 1 of the firsts (preferably not our own) for a high end player. Something like the 10th and boqvist for sergachev but I doubt that’s not even enough for him.
Just wondering your idea on where the devils are at and what you want them to do. Are you of the viewpoint that we aren’t competing for years to come so just move out all the veterans worth anything for picks? And then use all of those picks And see if any hit. don’t move any for nhl caliber players.

Devils need to be acquiring picks in the first three 3 rounds of this years draft, not trading them away.</div></div>
I disagree that we need more picks. Obviously it’s test to stockpile draft picks but you need to also turn them into players. Devils have a deep system already. They’ve drafted a ton of kids over the last few years and added more in the hall and Coleman trades. They don’t have a bunch of high end kids, but that’s why they keep their 3 firsts.
I wouldn’t hate if the maatta deal didn’t happen. I like the idea of taking a shot on JP. He’s a former 4th overall pick who at one point was rated higher than Laine. I understand that really doesn’t mean much now but he has shown in his time in Finland that he can Still play. He should be a 40/50 point guy. Or maybe I’m crazy

I agree with you guys on the top 8, however we always know one team typically goes off the public board. Hayton a couple years ago to the yotes and then last year Seider to the wings. I think Sanderson is a candidate based on being the second best d prospect after Drysdale. Quinn that you mentioned is another one who some rank top 10. I would not be happy but I wouldn’t be completely surprised if jersey picked him at 6 especially with the amount of 67 players they already have.
Saying that, who do you guys think that player could be this year?

I wouldn’t mind taking a shot at Risto either but I don’t think devils front office would go for that. They’ve become more analytically driven in recent years or at least have hired people with that intention.
Devils left side with butcher and smith would be so small that’s it’s hard not to want some size back there even though it’s not seen a necessity in today’s game. I still believe you need some of that grit at least for your kill

Regardless If you don’t like him or dont want him on the devils he’s going to get paid this summer. Only way I don’t see it is if he opts for a 1 year contact. I lhave heard the potential of players waiting for the salary cap to bump up since it will be flat this offseason. He’s a tough one based on only playing a shortened year. He had a rough start but was really strong down the stretch. I believe his game will age better than palmieri due to the fact he already is a pretty horrendous skater. He relies on his hockey sense and stick handling both which are above average.
I would definitely be on board with resigning him around 5-6 years and 5.75 - 6.5
Now that I bring up palmieri I would also like him to be retained but his contract would be tough. He needs a raise and he’s a year older then goose. However he’s our only “sniper” on the team unless we draft one or two or holts, Perfetti, Gunler, Quinn. Etc. What do you guys think?
