Description
Don’t be too serious, just having some fun. Would like to see your comments though.

If we use all picks which would be doubtful, within reason this is what I think would be a HAUL....

7 - Raymond
15 - Lundell
18 - Mercer
20 - Schneider

These may all be a few slots lower than projected but anything is possible.

There is a lot wrong here. St Louis isn't that desperate to get rid of Steen. Palms is the heart of the team and is likely to be the next captain and extended. Trade makes no sense for either side as even a rebuilding team needs veterans.

Palms is worth far more. They could've had what Coleman brought and then some if the dealt him at the deadline. They'll keep him at least until next season's TDL. I'm good with Steen. The VAN trade is not nearly enough, in my opinion. If NJ is gonna take on Eriksson's massive cap hit it's gonna cost VAN a 1st and a top prospect. Marleau had one year remaining at $6M and cost TOR a 1st.

I do agree that that the Devils will be sellers for at least another season.

perennial 25-30 goal scorer on a great value contract? They gave up a 1st for Zucker. Devils never trade Palms for a mid 1st before the season.

15 in a deep draft is a great pick. I love palms and he’s been an awesome player for us, but his next contract Isn’t something we want to be a part of.

In my eyes, we keep gusev long term instead.

Respectfully disagree with both comments.

Steen keeps them from resigning their captain. They can can resign him after we buy him out like caps did with orpik. They need to resign Dunn too.

Nico is the next captain. I hate to say it but the team has no heart. Finished in the bottom 6 the last 2 years. If palms signed a 4 year deal I would be all for it but he’s not taking a hometown discount. He’ll want at 5-6 years and around 7 mil which we would end up doing what the flyers will do with JVR

Zucker had 3.5 years term remaining. And was considered a bad trade for the Pens by the NHL Channel panel, "Guerin gets a grand slam in his first big trade"

I corrected to a 7th. It would be similar to the Marleau deal

Nico is not ready to be captain. Palms is the guy with the inside track on the Athletic Corey Masisak and Amanda Stein. He is likely taking more than a 4 year discount as his playing style is that of a sniper which ages well for the NHL. Agreed he won't take a hometown discount. He will be paid and paid well.

Here's the problem. The Marleau deal had A) twice as much real dollar salary to be paid, B) a buyout as part of the deal that the Blues won't pay for & C) a player with a less on-ice value than Steen currently has. You'll need to adjust the deal because of alll that. Of course, it may all be irrelevant because Steen would need to go along with the trade, and I can't say that he would.

Devils would pay the buyout not the blues so not sure what you mean. Marleau atoi the year he was traded was 16:21 and he scored 37 points. Steen was 14:02 and 17 points. I know points don’t mean everything and steen adds character and is a solid pker but I think your third point is off.

The only one I can get behind is actual dollars. But with the cap being flat when management wasn’t expecting it and being flat for the next 2 years is going to drive prices up on eating salary.

1- Right, which would cost them both money and cap space for the next two seasons, which would cost extra in trade to anyone who asked that it be put in that trade (such as when Marleau went in this deal). The Blues won't ask for this.

2- First off, 10 of those 37 points came on the power play (which Steen almost never sees). Secondly, Marleau played all 82 games that season, whereas Steen only played 55 this year. They were virtually even in 5v5 scoring rate. And that's with Steen playing on the 4th line and getting eight percent more of his starts in the D-zone. And as you noted, that's before we even get to to wide gulf in defensive value.

3- Heh. Yeah, says all the teams with cap space. We shall see. And even if the price does rise, it's not going to fly to the moon like some seem to think.

agreed, They can draft Jarvis and play him immediately. He's more than capable of making the jump. He has a pro shot and he is already a better skater than 1/2 the NHL.

I get it if you don’t think palms is worth it. You can see from devils fans side, they think the return isn’t enough.

Putting that aside, I highly doubt Jarvis makes the nhl jump next year. He’s a solid player but not nhl ready. Look how Hughes struggled this year with the nhl and they’re probably around the same size and skating ability.

The only player I can see that would be nhl ready in the 15 slot is lundell (if he slides). He’s not a sexy pick but he’s produced at the pro level already and has decent size. As we know producing at the pro level in Finland and having gold size doesn’t exactly mean you are ready (see kakko).

yeah teams don't care about this old way of thinking. They are moving on from it. There is ample statistical evidence showing that's true. Players are getting entry into the league younger and younger. And it's all about how they skate and how they play away from the puck. Has nothing to do with their size.

I'm not saying Zucker was a bad trade. It's looked great so far. They didn't lose to MTL b/c of him. But Palms was highly sought after at the deadline and wasn't moved. That leads me to think the Devils plan to keep him long term. Look at what Coleman brought. Palms in a top 6 Winger who can play playoff type hockey.

I think that depends on the dollars and term. There is enough uncertainty with wingers below them in the system where extending both makes sense.
