Interesting idea - prospects instead of picks for Meier🧐. Don’t know how SJ would value them, but they are your top 3 prospects.
Boeser added for cap and he gives SJ a comparable (albeit not as good) replacement for Meier during rebuild
Good idea, but you’d be emptying the cupboard and that d corps looks… pretty underwhelming

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Leafsmania</b></div><div>Agreed, it is possible he moves off at doesnt take that. If so, Leafs use the money on another player for that. The hope would be a hometown discount plus most of the money upfront for a signing bonus. The deal would take him to he is 35 so that is good security. Ilya's contract value was 19 and Buntings would be 24, though as you said less term.</div></div>
Totally different situations; Bunting is a home town kid. Nick Paul just signed 7 x $3.1M so he’d have chances to win. Hopefully Bunting prioritizes winning for his home team; I’d go up to $4Mx6 or $3.875Mx7 (heavily front loaded with bonuses) which is good value on both sides

Next Year after Meier Deal
It’s tempting- that top 6 would be legit the best in league. But too many downsides imo:
1/ No way to sign everyone in 2024 so most likely Willy walks.
2/ big, really big risk in net; I like kallgrenn and Woll but would rather they were backup in 24-25 (not 23-24 - too soon)
3/ d corps is just too thin; injuries bound to happen and if they did to anyone in top 4, we’d be badly exposed
4/ bottom 6 is just too thin (we need to keep Kampf); injury to top 6 and we’d be in trouble

Random attempt at next year
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>BCAPP</b></div><div>Re Timmins, we'll see where we are end of the year. But the difference is pretty small.
Re Kampf if he wants much more Id pass. He is a 4c not a 3c. Overpaying for 4th liners is a good way to nuke someone's cap
Re Domi I find it kind of funny that signing him for a few hundred k less than bunting and 1 year less is an over pay.
Dude has hit 28 goals and 70 pts. And has a career average over 82 of 51 points over 82 GP
He's scoring quite similar but more goals than bunting this year (11 g and 23 pts in 32 gp for Domi and 9 g and 24 pts in 34 games for Bunting). Bunting definitely plays with better line mates.
Domi can also play c and w which is an advantage.
Now to be absolutely care I am NOT suggesting Domi is a stud or something. I've signed him above for 3.65 million which is maybe the going wait for a decent middle 6 winger. It's a couple steps below guys like copp got, and a good step below someone like Mikheyev got this summer...</div></div>
Agree to disagree; I think Kampf is a really good 3/4C and excellent defensively which is important to Leafs - great matchup and pk guy. Holmberg also looks promising in similar role.
Sorry but Domi is not at bunting’s level, half of his points are on the PP this year & Leafs PP1 is set; only 2 of bunting’s are. Bunting plays with great players because he is exactly what Matthew’s or JT’s line needs - smart, tenacious / good forecheck, good hands, goes to the net. Domi is not really good at any of these things - he is more of a playmaker which we don’t need.
To each his own but I just don’t see Domi as a good fit , I think there is a reason he has bounced around - he’s a bit one dimensional and has obvious flaws

Too high a price imo. Maybe that would be what’s required given his importance to Columbus; if so, prefer to target a rental (ROR, Kane, Horvat) - lower acquisition cost and a better offensive player (albeit for one playoff only).

No major issues; like the plan other than Domi - major overpay ($ & term) imo.
I think Kampf gets more but that could be off set b/c I think:
1/ Timmins gets less (he should not get more than $1M if even, given his injury record alone).
2/ also wonder if we could knock Bunting down by $0.25-0.50M if we add a 6th year (which I would do); Nick Paul just signed for 7 years, same age.
I like Steeves next year 👍.
And can we get samsonov for 3 year term?
Maybe use Domi money to sign a vet dman (Benn ain’t him next year and tough to count on 40 year old Gio all year) and a youngish FA winger to a “show me” contract - Bunting 2.0

Buffalo is out of a playoff spot now but their goal differential is in the positive. They aren't far off from making a playoff push.
I would top 5 protect that pick going to San Jose though.</div></div>
You can’t put a condition on 2023 1st rounder when 2024 1st rounder is also being traded with a ‘top 10’ protect clause. If I were a GM I simply wouldn’t accept any draft pick with a ‘top x’ clause; draft picks can take up to 3-4 years to turn into everyday players and the team I’m trading to might want me to wait another year (potentially) if the draft pick becomes too valuable to give up🤯. Nah - not on my watch

Agree with you that it’s a weak offer; not sure Kubalik is worth a 1st but also don’t see any reason wings need to trade Kubalik. Especially if bertuzzi is walking; have to think wings will be major players in FA over summer and plan to contend next year so why move cost effective, productive winger

I appreciate the time you took, and the detailed explanations for each proposal.
Think - like a lot of fans of underperforming teams - you are over estimating value of your own players. As a Leafs fan I am a big Dubas backer but i would lead the charge to have him fired if he ever traded a 1st for Schenn, a truly preposterous trade proposal.

Tbh, I don’t know - just don’t see him being good fit on a line with JT & Mitch, but I could be wrong.
I agree with you - I think list of potential buyers will be short, but who knows 🤷. Assuming all else being equal, I’d prefer ROR - has playoff pedigree and think he could drive a line as 3C

More and more - I’m coming to the conclusion that Horvat is not what we need. His acquisition price will be massive (he’s having an outlier year), no chance to extend him, he’s not well suited for 2W so he’ll likely play 3C and not see any time on our PP1.
Won’t be worth the price.

Obviously as a Leafs fan - I hope it doesn’t happen but also don’t see it next year. A lot of teams between you and playoffs, and most of them on the upswing as well. Dorion’s made some pretty bad calls imo.
I hope the ownership gets settled and work on new arena starts ASAP b/c I know Ottawa is a hockey hotbed and an arena downtown would be awesome.
But I think it’ll be a few years for the SENs - might need to wait for bruins and Tampa to age out & fall off the pace 🤞; Atlantic is brutal

Won’t comment on the trade value but in general - I honestly don’t understand why a team would agree to trade for a ‘top 10 protected’ draft pick.
So in this particular case - if SENs encounter some injuries and finish bottom 10 in 2024, Yotes would have to wait until 2025 for their 1st rounder? If yes, no chance I’d agree to a stipulation like that - in general or in this case specifically

They’re both good players but with cap only going up by $1M next year (which is a joke btw 😕), this year’s problem persists one more year:
Competitive teams are still cap strapped and no incentive for non competitive teams to take on cap (even if for valuable players)

Most likely no significant moves until closer to TDL … too many teams still “in the race”. GMs won’t disrespect their fan bases by moving pieces when there is still a chance of a playoff spot

Kerfoot also walked into nhl from college and had a really good rookie year. No guarantee but also no reason Knies couldn’t do same thing (he’d be playing with really good players) . He has the size, shot and as long as he can keep up with pace - certainly worth an extended look.

No way bunting should get that deal ; more like 5-6 x $3.75-4M imo. Hate for him to go but if he leaves to get that elsewhere we can target replacement FA wingers.
Don’t know why we can’t keep both, but crazy early to be picking one goalie over the other . Let’s see how they each perform down the stretch; in playoffs is where it will really count.
