Excellent bottom six signing. Archibald has been used essentially everywhere in the lineup and has been good in all usages. He might not get massive numbers of points, but the oilers bottom six doesn't have anybody to set him up with such opportunities yet.
Considering the typical fourth line player is costing more and more (wagner got more), this is a steal for a guy that looks decent on the 3rd line as well.
Even if Archibald drops off, this remains a low risk, good reward contract. Good move, Kenny!

It had to do with tagging space. Teams are only allowed to have so much of next season's cap you can allocate before and during the current season.
Signing Muzzing before the deadline would have limited potential deals with term because it would have reduced the tagging space, so they were waiting to sign Muzzin until they were sure they were not needing that tagging space in any deadline trades

A player becomes UFA at age 27 OR 7 years in NHL. Therefore when this contract expires, Matthews will be in the league for 8 years . So 1 UFA year will be burned.

would you make this trade
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>mikeb98</b></div><div>You aren't wrong. He took 25% (~200 FO's) of his total season's FO's after he joined TB, so he definitely was used on the wing more. But that has more to do with the depth at center in TB, rather than how good Miller is at that position. He clicked with Stamkos, and you aren't going to move Stammer to the Wing, and since Miller is versatile and can play any forward position, he mostly plays the wing there. Even on the second line, Johnson and Point are both very solid 2C options. At this point, I would say TB's need for LW is greater than C, and that looks to be the case for a while (with Point being young and under team control, and Johnson on a good, long term deal.
~Short Version~
TB has great center depth, and they need Miller to play LW either on the first or second line. Miller however, when he did take FO's, was successful (both in NY and TB).</div></div>
Fair point, I can't see TB moving such a swiss army knife in Miller. He's a guy you'd love to have on your team.

Rebuild
I absolutely think that Ottawa should go into full rebuild mode and should definitely trade away their impending FAs and maybe even some controllable guys as well. That being said I don't totally understand your deals:
1. Karlsson trade- I get that Heiskanan is one of the top prospects in the NHL and just 19 years old, but this seems like the weakest return of the 3 impending FAs. While Heiskanan is a top prospect, there is also the most uncertainty with him as well, as he's yet to play in the NHL. With Faksa as the only other piece this feels kind of like a soft deal, especially compared to the other impending FAs who I think have less value on the trade market (if we are assuming they are all signing extensions).
2. Duchene trade- Duchene is a good center and an upgrade over Wennberg, but adding in both Milano and a 1st seems like too much. Sure an extension is part of the deal, but the Blue Jackets are giving up quite a bit for a guy who would be set to be a FA otherwise. Wennberg's contract may be a bit underwater, but he's shown promise and is still pretty young and Milano could have a very bright future at a cheap price. Add in the first and this looks like a lot for CBJ to give up, esp. since it probably hurts their postseason hopes this season not helps them (and going forward).
3. Stone & Ryan trade- Even ignoring Ryan's negative value for a minute, giving up Tuch, Miller and a 1st for Stone is quite a bit. Sure Stone is a really good winger and he should be an effective scorer for years to come, but he's also going to get paid big time. He might be looking at an $8-9.5M a year salary range (probably would take the high end to get him to forego UFA) for 7 or 8 years. Vegas would be giving up 4 years of Miller on a pretty favorable deal and 5 or 6 years of Tuch's team control, the first few of which will be cheap. That just doesn't really make sense and again would look to hurt Vegas' playoff hopes. On top of that they have to take on the terrible Bobby Ryan contract.
4. Ceci trade- This I don't get at all, Ceci is a good defenseman with two years of team control remaining and you trade him for 1 year of Brock Nelson. Unless you meant to extend Nelson long term I don't get it. The Senators will be bad this year so Nelson would be a waste.

It would be tough enough to pry 1 defenseman out of Anaheim, let alone 2. Why not just combined those deals to make it easier for users to try and follow your train of thought? Jacob Larrson is their prized defensive prospect that is closest to being NHL ready. On the basis that one of their current defenseman will probably need to be traded at some point in order to make room for Montour, in addition to their remaining unsigned RFAs, I think it would be much easier to acquire Manson alone, then Manson plus Larsson. I think Manson's trade value is around Kasperi Kapanen plus two 2nd round draft picks. Considering Kapanen's development, his willingness to do 4th line dirty work, and great speed, it would be a tough loss, but Manson would be work it I think.

"Can't Afford Everyone" - *In-Depth*
Appreciate the thought and effort put in to this. Although I do agree with the comments from some posters here that Marleau won't be moved. He has a NMC, just uprooted his family to be here, and is on a team that will hopefully be making a couple deep playoff runs in his final two years. The only way his contract comes off the books is if he retires after this season and the leafs trade his contract + a sweetener to a cap floor team
I'm likely in the minority here...but I don't think Zaitsev would be hard to move right now with 0 retention, as long as the leafs didn't care what the return was. He's had 1 solid season and 1 plauged by injury and illness. Honestly the Toronto media is to blame for how everyone in the area perceives him right now. As soon as he got injurred the Leafs' D started to struggle and the media was pining for his return. Him and Hainsey were logging all 2min of penalty kills. I think he got worn down, then sick, lost weight, and never caught up. Toronto would be wise to just keep him as he could very well be the answer at RD we need.
I don't see the need to trade Horton. He gets slapped on the LTIR so no use giving up an asset to move him. Plus he doesn't have insurance so whichever team has him on thier roster is paying his full salary which not too many teams can write off so easily.
Most other points I agree on. Particularly your assessment of Conor Brown. And your comments on Gardiner. I think his production offensively helps the team more than his occassional blunders hurts them. And at less than $6m is a good re-signing....for me it depends entirely on how Dermott looks this year. If he proves he's ready for full time top-6 minutes on the left side than Gardiner's cap dollars are likely better spent elsewhere.

The Future Bolts?
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>mikeb98</b></div><div>I think your signings are decent. Your point contract is spot on, Gourde I think is 4.5 x 3 (especially if he replicates his success from last year). Vasilevsky I could see making 7M for 6 years. The Cirelli contract is interesting, I am curious to see how he progresses. Raddysh should definitely be ready for an NHL job, same with Foote (though I am not sure about the top pair for him, maybe second pair with Sergachev playing 1st pair).
The Stralman signing is okay, he is a solid defenceman, and i think that is roughly the deal to get it done, however you have Dotchin to play the 3rd pair role (for much cheaper at that), and it may be a better idea to move on from Stralman and use that cap space elsewhere (depth signings or deadline moves). This is purely subjective though, so I don't really have a problem with that.
My reasoning behind the two star rating:
Sergachev contract 3 x 3 is more than a bargain, and I think a bit unrealistic (especially if he continues to improve like he did this past season). I would say he is worth more than that after this season alone, let alone two more seasons to grow and develop. I would think the number for him is 3 x 5, give or take 250k. The signing you are proposing would be more than ideal, i am interested to see what they do with his contract (or whether he is in a package for EK if they choose to acquire him).
My main gripe with this however is the Gourde situation. Your contract is reasonable (a bit under-valued imo but solid), however, after the 2018-2019 season, he is a UFA. Right now, he is only making 1M, and he is definitely worth a lot more than that. If he replicates his success, he could be looking at the contract you suggested at the end of this season (3 x 4.25). While that is a good signing, there would be no room for him unless you traded Callahan, which you have not included in this mock roster. I understand that in the year you are doing this (2020-2021) Callahan is a UFA, but you should still mention the trade you would make for him (or Killorn), because otherwise, one of the key roster players is not on this roster.
MY FIXES:
Add in a Callahan trade (buyout probably wouldn't work, as that would eat too much cap), that way you have the room for Gourde.
Update the Sergachev signing (I could be over-estimating his growth, but I just can't see him taking a 3 x 3 bridge).
Let me know what you think about these changes :)</div></div>
I agree w/ your thoughts on Gourde, and for Vasilevskiy in terms of AAV, but I think Yzerman will want to lock him up as long as possible (although 6 years would work too). For Cirelli, I think he'll get $1m-$2m AAV for a year or two depnding on his output this season. If Foote and Raddysh aren't used in a trade (for Karlsson), then I see them making the NHL in the next year or two. I didn't know exactly which prospects to put on the NHL roster, but I think Foote will soon. I also think the 4th-line Center position should be filled by a prospect next year after Paquette's contract expires. The reasoning for my pairings on defense are because Cooper likes to put an experienced player (Hedman, McDonagh, Stralman) w/ a young player (just like Hedman + Dotchin in the past year). I don't think Cooper will put Koekkoek and a Sergachev or Foote together because of that. Flip Foote and Sergachev around and that works too, and if Cooper is willing to pair two young defenseman, then McDonagh + Stralman can be the shutdown pair while playing Foote or Sergachev w/ Hedman helps their development. The Stralman signing was just to bring back a solid veteran that is well-liked and does his job well (AAV could be a little more than $3m). I figured Dotchin could play that 7th defenseman role on a cheap contract. If Sergachev isn't traded and continues to develop, I'll be interested to see what his bridge deal will be (probably somehwere between $3m-$5m). I didn't realize the Gourde situation at first, but I would probably just trade Callahan this offseason or the next w/ a pick(s) and a prospect for a pick. I would try to trade him and not buy him out because that will further stress the cap situation for a few more years as you stated.
Thanks for the feedback! :)

TB with EK - 2018-2019 SEASON
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>mikeb98</b></div><div>First off, I am not sure why I thought Callahan had one year left (I have been doing a lot of 2019-2020 Seasons as well, in which he is on the last year of his contract), so yes, it would be 11.6 as you say (technically 9.4 salary, but 11.6 cap hit).
One thing about the Hossa trade is that Hossa will never play again, whereas Callahan can still play a bottom six role and have okay production, play well in his own end, and provide leadership. This isn't a black and white cap dump, because he can still be a role player for a team. Also, they would buy him out before they retained any salary.
What about this. In this roster TB has 6.5M in cap space, meaning they can actually hold on to Callahan for the season, and still have around 750k to work with. So let's pretend that TB holds onto him until the 2018-2019 Offseason, in which Callahan is only on the books for one season. Trading him would be much easier with one year left (Hossa has three as of the trade), and you can likely get it done with two picks and a B prospect who (rather than not making it to the NHL), could develop into a solid top nine or top 6 D, just wouldn't fit in TB.
2018-2019 OFFSEASON TRADE (BEFORE DRAFT)
Callahan (could retain up to 1M) - 1M would be lower than the buyout cap hit
B Prospect
2019 3rd
2020 4th
If this doesn't get it done, TB can just buy him out and have 1.5M on the cap for the 2019-2020 and 2020-2021 seasons (which wouldn't be a big deal).
In summary, TB doesn't have to get rid of him under this roster until 2019-2020 Offseason, and if the Rangers (or whoever is a potential partner) wants too much, then TB can just buy him out and not lose anything.
Another option is adding him to the Karlsson deal (though Ottawa is trying to cut payroll), but then you change the 2020 4th to a 1st, and add another prospect into the mix (and maybe add another pick).
As for your proposal, that wouldn't make sense for TB. They get rid of Callahan to have room for their better players, not take back another bad contract (plus they would not need another high paid defenseman with Karlsson oh their team). If NYR wanted to add Smith who makes 3M (with the RS), then TB would find another suitor or buy out Callahan (which again, since they don't have to do that until next season, would just be 1.5M.
If I am the Rangers I am going to use all that cap space effectively (since they are a big market team who has no problem spending to the cap). Load up on picks and prospects and take those short, bad contracts. I understand why you would want a better return for taking on his contract, but (in the case I have in this comment). It is one year, the Rangers could get the two picks and prospect and buy out Callahan if they really wanted to.</div></div>
I think i'm still sore from stevie y screwing the rangers a few years back. Yeah St Louis is a great player and the rangers do not make that run without him, but for at that point a 60 point player, you got callahan (at the time coming off selke nominations etc), and two first rounders (both of which were sent to the freaking islanders of all teams-- way to screw us). It's okay that we are at an impasse though as none of capfriendly actually matters irl. I just want the karlsson trade to fing happen so we can see where everyone stands at that point. GL to you

You're over the cap already, and if you want the Senators to take Marleau and give you Karlsson, you're going to have to offer a really good package, especially if you can't take Bobby Ryan. If you add in 1-2 top prospects, aand maybe another pick, I think that would be a bit more fair.

TBL Game Plan for 19-20 Season
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>mikeb98</b></div><div>Yes, if Karlsson hits free agency then maybe things change, but as it stands now I don;t think an EK trade is in their best interest. They can make it work, but it has a lot of risk. A potential trade is Sergachev, Raddysh and picks, and like you said, Sergachev is looking to be a stud, and as of next season would make at least 9 million less than EK (and is he 9M worse than him, probably not.). Then there is Raddysh, and who knows what he could turn into. Plus the picks, and this is not even to mentio n outting your team into cap hell in the coming years.
If McDonagh didn't get his extnesion for 6.75M (which I think is a good deal to be honest), then maybe there is room for EK. But yes, a cup for TB is definitely possible, if not probable with their current roster (and for years to come).
Faulk would be an interesting option, because he is much cheaper, and has two years left (unlikely to be extended afterwards I would think), and you can hold onto Sergachev on the back end. What do you think a trade for Faulk would look like? Here is my trade for him:
Raddysh
2019 3rd
2019 6th
Faulk
2019 5th
Raddysh is exactly what Carolina would want (aside from not being a center), but he is a young, inexpensive forward to add to their forward core (with Skinner on his way out), and Faulk is the odd man out as it is, and he is definitely on the trade market. I think this one goes through, Carolina may want a little bit more for him (perhaps ditch their pick in the trade and sweeten the deal just a touch on the TB side, but I think this is a solid deal for both teams. Trades from a position of strength on both sides (TB with forwards, CAR with D). Let me know what you think.</div></div>
If they can dump Callahan and/or Killorn to make space (through the trades you proposed originally), I think the Lightning definitely accept. It seems pretty fair for Carolina as well. I've seen Tyler Johnson for Faulk proposed before, but that would obviously involve Tyler Johnson waiving his NTC to go to Carolina, and he might not. Maybe they'd want you to replace one of the picks with Volkov or Stephens, though, just to get them a center, though. Overall I think that's more reasonable than Karlsson.

TB with EK - 2019-2020 SEASON
I think this is probably one of the most reasonable proposals I've seen. The only problem is Tyler Johnson's NTC, which I'm not sure he waives for NYI at this point. I think he might waive it to go to Seattle as he's from Washington, and I think Colorado or Carolina may also be decent. If he wants to win a Cup first, though, he very well may not agree to leave for NYI. I suppose it's more likely than him waiving an NTC to go to Ottawa under Melnyk, though. If necessary, you can put J.T. Miller into the trade instead, though, and then you can put Johnson in Miller's current spot. That's where Johnson played for most of the playoffs on the shutdown line that matched Taylor Hall and then the Bergeron line. From looking at stats, I think the Islanders are paying less than fair value, but the Lightning are in a tough spot to do anything about it since they need the cap space.
The Lightning will really have to hope that Seattle brings in a lot of extra revenue and the salary cap jumps, though, otherwise they may lose Cirelli, or even Vasilevskiy.
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>mikeb98</b></div><div>Another option is instead of trading Johnson, you can let gourde walk as a UFA, and you can have Andreoff slot into the 4th line LW role.</div></div>
I don't know, I think Gourde provides a slightly more valuable role to the team than Johnson. He's great with forechecking, adds some physicality to the game (which the Lightning really do need), and scores almost as much as Johnson. He's also a bit more consistent and less streak-y. Considering Johnson can get them assets and Gourde would go for free, I think trading Johnson is the best option. If that's not an option due to NTCs, I would opt for trading J.T. Miller (although trading people before their contract begins like that is bad PR for Yzerman and may make it harder for him to continue to get team-friendly deals, which could turn out to be really problematic).

Looking back on it, I do agree mine was a little low for Stone, so after seeing your counter, how about this:
Note: I am assuming Russell is a cap dump and takes away value on EDM side, so I will take him out
Puljujarvi
2019 1st (top 5 protected)
2019 3rd
2020 Conditional 2nd (becomes 1st if Stone gets back to back 30-goal seasons, or if EDM wins the cup)
What do you think of that?</div></div>
Think that’s closer to the value without Russell involved. Just don’t know what EDM cap situation is because Stone is an RFA right now and will probably get a contract between 7-8 mill per. If it fits I think OTT might accept. Maybe add a lower prospect too to sweeten the deal.

Russell is obviously a cap dump, but can still play top six minutes.
Puljujarvi and Yamamoto are very high-end prospects, which Edmonton would not get rid of, due to Puljujarvi ready to enter the NHL, and Yamamoto having lots of upside. They need wingers, so Stone and the oilers may be a good match, but I can't see them getting rid of both of those guys. As for the picks, I don't think Stone is worth two 1st rounders, especially seeing as how Edmonton would be weary on giving them up, as they could be lottery picks. What about this as the trade:
Yamamoto
2019 1st Round Pick (Top 5 Protected)
2019 3rd Round Pick</div></div>
Doesn’t seem nearly enough for Stone. He’s easily one of if not the best defensive Winger in the game and can put up points as well. He’s always either at or near the top in the league in getting turnovers. I think pairing him with either McDavid or Drai would work wonders in Edmonton. I can see them not wanting to give up both prospects but Ottawa has more of a need to field a better team now (since col has OTT 1st) and also at RW (especially with Stone gone) which is why I think they’d rather get Puljujärvi. Maybe counter with:
Puljujärvi
Russell
2019 1st (top 10 protected)
2020 1st (unprotected) (if Edm keeps 2019 pick this becomes 2021)
Also I traded TB 2nd back to them from NYR and gave NYR the 1st without the condition.
