I'd say Petterson is at a discount honestly. The way he's playing is 5-6mil player. If we trade him at the deadline for half retained I think you are right, easily brings back a 1st.

I just can't see Nylander signing here. Don't think it would be super appealing signing with a team that likely won't make the playoffs until after a rebuild. I think Guentzel and Petterson will likely be traded at deadline regardless but then this offseason will be interesting in terms of rebuild talk.

We thinking rebuild at this point? I think we might be in the same boat. I think it's very unlikely we make playoffs this year and next year will probably be even worse tbh

If the team sells at this years deadline, which I think we will if we're still out of playoff spot, then it's time to rebuild. It won't get any easier next year after missing two years in a row...

Dubas better do something
Dubas can't do much more. He completely retooled the team this offseason and it is still worse than last year. That is not Dubas' fault or Sully's (although I believe Sully could do a lot better adjusting to a slower roster). To me this signals that the team is just on the decline. I don't think it will get any better next year with more cap space. Firing Sully won't do anything. We'd still probably miss playoffs. Not saying he should be completely free of blame or never be on the hot seat, but the #1 issue right now is that it is just not realistic to contend for a cup. Best thing we could do is sell at the deadline then rebuild in the offseason. Next summer no big FA's are going to want to sign with a team that missed playoffs twice in a row and clearly is on the decline.

I think if we sell at the deadline then that is the start of the rebuild. Can't imagine Dubas thinking it'll be any easier to win next year if were out of the playoffs again.

Why? If we're selling than I don't see why we wouldn't. Obviously if were still in the mix and have a chance we won't, he's our best defensive D. But if we're selling he'd get a good return.

Part 3 Pens in 2 years with Sid extension
If we are out of it by trade deadline then that signals to me that we need to rebuild. Signing a bunch of big free agents I don't think will work. When a dynasty is over you need to build from the ground up and get young talent. And if we don't make playoffs this year I don't know why those guys would want to sign.

Retooling 24-25
I don't know why Nylander would want to come here when our days of contending are likely done. I think it's time to rebuild, but even if we don't it would be 1 max 2 more years of even being a fringe playoff team. The Guentzel and Petterson trades are good though.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>ricochetii</b></div><div>Or you make trades early enough to have an impact on getting into the playoffs. Risky, but Pittsburgh is at the tail end before the inevitable rebuild. If you're not all in, might as well start the post Crosby era now.
As for the trade, a little light to trigger an early move with retention. An extra conditional pick may do it. The value has to be definitively higher than what it "might" be at the deadline. Right now it "might" already be a 1st, so there's no reason to accept Carter or retain to make it happen early.
That's assuming Carter waives, which I don't believe will happen.
Ignoring what Montreal would receive, I think Monahan would be a good fit if Pittsburgh can figure it out.</div></div>
I don't think there's one fix for the team. There's so many issues (lack of speed, no net front presence, bad team defense, no toughness, system that doesn't work anymore, etc.) Given that I think it's probably best to start the rebuild.

I hear you, but I just don't see how we can be buyers if we continue playing the way we are. If we're 5-10 points out of playoffs and continue playing poorly I don't think it's a good idea to throw away another 1st. Dubas also said in an interview the next two games (before lightning game) will determine what he does. And I remember in his press conference he said you need to be able to adjust strategies if the team goes off track and is out of contention. I just can't imagine this team competing for another cup. I hope I'm wrong.

Full on Rebuild
Don't know if all the trades are super realistic, but a rebuild this offseason is. I think this is probably what will end up happening. Sell at deadline then start of rebuild offseason. I would love if big 3 stayed to help the next generation, but they are not entitled to. They've earned the right to go elsewhere. Hypothetically I think Malkin and Letang bring back 1sts. Crosby potentially two. Karlsson it depends on a lot of factors, but I would think at half retained he'd get a 1st.

It's very evident that it is time to rebuild. Team isn't going anywhere this season and next season it will only get tougher. Best to sell at deadline then fully commit to rebuild this offseason.

I do agree, but I think if we sell this TDL then we rebuild this offseason. Our chances will be worse and worse every year from here on out. If we aren't competitive this year don't see why management would think next year would be better

He helps both the power play and our bottom 6. Our power play is awful, completely stationary, predictable passing, and no net front presence. I don't think he'd solve it, but Kessel is a good power play player. And outside the powerplay he would help our bottom 6 a ton. Barely anyone in our bottom 6 scores goals. Kessel did fine last year in Vegas if he puts up similar numbers this year he'd be a big upgrade.

Kessel was also a key reason for the great PP this team had because of his passing and ability to enter the zone. Is he the best possible solution? No, but he's an upgrade.</div></div>
Agree completely. Need to look at in the context of how he compares to our current bottom 6 right now, not how he compares to how he used to play. He really wasn't that bad at all on the Knights last year
