Big deadline moves

What if the Penguins took some cap back like Kuzmenko. And it was a trade + extension sort of deal

I think it would be catastrophic to trade the 2025 1st. Even if we buy at deadline I wouldn't trade more than the 2nd tbh

Yeah I think if we pass up on this trade then we will have nothing to kick start a rebuild when it's time. And I think we will probably lose him at the end of the season either way because why would he want to sign a long term deal with a team that wants to rebuild soon.

If we trade Guetnzel I would prefer to just sell altogether, but I would not hate this. We may be in a situation where the team looks good and in playoff hunt, but a Guentzel trade would get us too big of a return to pass up.

Would Borque be available in a trade for Marcus Pettersson?

I think he'll go for full rebuild tbh. If we can't make playoffs this year it will be even tougher next year. Would have to replace Guentzel + improve in addition to that and I can't see any big FA wanting to sign here given we are so close to a rebuild and missed playoffs two years in a row.

what crosby will say if dubas sells this deadline
I think he will stay. And I definitely hope so. But ultimately he has earned the right to dictate what he wants to do. If we miss playoffs then rebuild and he wants to chase another cup then we should do everything to make that happen. That being said, I don't think he will leave and I really really hope he does not.

Agree on the Karlsson point. I would love to see the core 3 stay, but I think they deserve the right to go where they want once we decline. Which I think has already started. Mid this year could turn into a bottom 10 team next year. I would hope they stay, but ultimately if they want to chase one more cup I think they've earned the right. And I think it's pretty obvious that it will not happen here.

keeping guentzel
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>TMLBRIAN</b></div><div>Outsider Perspective: I am in the Pittsburgh needs to do a full rebuild camp. Before Dubas arrived in Pits I couldn't see a way where they would be a cup contender going into this year. I thought they should work on getting younger.
Adding Smith for a 3rd. Good move but for the wrong team in my mind. It made them older.
Adding Karlsson. Again wrong team and 10m cap was too much.
Adding Acciari. Good move. Right team. He is older but his cap is low and would help in a complete tear down scenario.
Resigning Jarry Expensive. Good goalie but I thought they should go for a cheap cap tandem.
Adding Graves. I actually liked this signing. Reasonable cap hit, solid #4 dman. Younger guy.
Adding Eller. Didn't love the move based on his age and cap. Not terrible but already adding Acciari, it felt a bit redundant. One or the other. The other guy should have been in his 20s.
I do think the best bet for Pits is to sell Guentzel and to talk with Crosby, Malkin and Letang. See if they want to be moved to a competitor for their final years. Crosby would fit PERFECTLY on Colorado, for example.
They can either do a full rebuild and be competitive in a few years again. Or be mediocre for the next few years with Crosby and Malkin, not collect any assets and be irrelevant for the next 8-10 years.
Those are just my thoughts :)</div></div>
I think you are right. I don't hate what we did this summer, I would've personally rebuilt, but a move like Karlsson was worth a shot imo. But at this point I agree it is time to rebuild. If we don't trade Guentzel at deadline and still miss playoffs then we get into the territory where it becomes very difficult to even start a rebuild.

I think we wait and see how the standings look end of January, but with a rebuild being likely a year or two away this might be too good of an opportunity to pass up even if we are in contention. Especially since it's looking like he won't re-sign

0% chance we trade them at this deadline, but we will likely be sellers at deadline and then go into a rebuild in the offseason. Once the rebuild starts the chances go up significantly. I want them to stay and I think at least 1-2 of them will, but they deserve a chance to compete for a cup elsewhere if they'd rather do that then stick around for a rebuild. It's their decisions.

Next year he will have a pretty clean slate and the cap space to build on what he’s started. There’s a lot of hockey left this year. Have faith.</div></div>

I have faith that we will be fine this year once healthy anyways. I don’t see us buying a huge piece, but I don’t see us selling. Even if we’re out of it, I think that we would still heavily try to extend Guentzel.
If we’re COMPLETELY out of it and if Guentzel has shown 0 sign of wanting to extend, only then do I think we move him. Even if we’re out of it I don’t see us moving Pettersson or Jarry.</div></div>
See what you are saying but I disagree. Just don't think it's realistic to continue trying to contend if we miss the playoffs multiple years in a row

Agree on the Edmonton front, we could probably get a 1st. I don't think it is a given that we will try and contend next year after selling though

Only thing is you need to make sure this team is able to compete by next season, since SJ stills owns our 1st.</div></div>
I think the best case scenario is SJ gets the pick this year. Next year will likely be worse tbh

Big name trades may or may not happen for the prices Im only guessing
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>pens1991</b></div><div>Even if they rebuild it's out of the question.
Listen, Rust is a great player but he definitely benefits from playing with Sid.
His contract AAV + Term with his age is not attractive for other teams. You'd have to get a team he's willing to waive for and even at that point the pens wouldn't have a ton of leverage. (Look at the EK Trade situation).
I could see them trading Ek in the 2025-26 season maybe, but I don't see it this year or next.
They will have more cap next summer to try and retool and give it one more go</div></div>
I can't imagine next year they would have an easier time making the playoffs than this year. Even with more cap everyone will be a year older and it will just be tougher. I guess an argument can be made for rebuild vs. retooling again, I think Dubas would rebuild, but neither is a given and both are a possibility. I think the sooner we start it the better. It might be very unlikely, but maybe if we play our cards perfectly we give Crosby one more run at the tail end of the rebuild.
I think if we rebuild it is all going to depend on who with a NMC wants to/dosen't want to be traded. EK deserves to go to a contender if he wants to imo. Same goes for Rust and a lot of others as well. I think it will all depend what they want to do.

Neither of these players are going anywhere. Dubas just traded for EK.
Rust is playing very good hockey and has a full NMC.

I could be wrong but I think this is assuming we are rebuilding after this season. If we plan to contend both for sure stay, but I think it's fair to question where we go if we miss playoffs 2 years in a row
