Take out Guentzel and it’s fair. To add Guentzel is another 1st and top prospect. To add 2 million in retention is another 2nd rd pick.

Trading Jake and retooling in the offseason
That EK trade isn't even worth the retention for 4 years.
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>pensfan21</b></div><div>I like the Jake trade here a lot, but the way I see it this is our last chance to go all in. I don't think we have a great chance this season, but I would understand if they want to give Crosby one last opportunity the way he is playing. I think it will largely depend on how we do at this deadline. But if we trade Jake it's pretty much over. It will be much tougher to win next year than this year with how old the roster is. And free agents won't want to sign here for long term, given how close we are to a rebuild, which would make it almost impossible to replace Jake. It will only get tougher to win next year. I think we either go all in now then begin the rebuild in the offseason or we just sell now and start the rebuild.</div></div>
There is literally nothing this team can bring in to make them a cup contender, and pissing those assets away will hurt a lot going forward.
This team is a seller.

Thread:
Jake to Nashville
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>pensfan21</b></div><div>I see what your saying and can see why going for it is a good option. For me though I think the question is whether we will even make the playoffs and not whether we will win the cup. And when the goal becomes only playoffs and it's the second year in a row I think that's when it's time. I think if we start the rebuild right now we could potentially make it a lot quicker. If we extend Guentzel though and keep trying to contend for 2-3 years it will be a brutal rebuild. And for me it's not worth it when the chances of winning the cup are almost 0. As far as returns go I think:
Guetnzel: We should try and get two A level prospects.
Pettersson: A 1st and maybe a B prospect
Jarry: If we trade him for Campbell on the Oilers we'd probably get two 1sts back.
2-3 good prospects and three 1sts in this case would be a good start to the rebuild. Then next year we would most likely have a chance at the draft lottery. I'm a big believer in not rushing through the rebuild and really taking our time to make sure we build up a good team. Ideally we take it slow and have 4-5 years of top 3-5 picks and then can have a new era of contending.</div></div>
Well that's definitely a fair question haha - the odds of them missing the playoffs are a lot higher than their chances of winning the Cup that's for sure. Which to me is close to zero. But if you have a decent chance to make the playoffs, which right now I think they do, then I think you have to take it. My opinion is also heavily based on where they are in the standings. If they **** the bed before the TDL and are like 12+ points out of the playoff race come deadline time, I have no issue trading Guentzel. I get what you're saying about the rebuild - why go for it with a very slim chance of winning. Try to lessen the rebuild. I guess that's just where we differ, I see a brutal rebuild no matter what, and would take another playoff berth or two over ending it now and hopefully hitting on your picks to quicken the future rebuild, which isn't guaranteed. It might not be the right business decision, maybe it's just what I want as a fan haha.
Those would be great assets to get - and can be a great start to a rebuild assuming you hit on the picks. Honestly you might get something decent for Ned too with the way he's played. My main here issue though is the middle ground thing. If they blow it up and get a bunch of good assets, sure I'll be sad, but it's still a respectable and logical move that I can understand. I can't hate it. What can't happen, and what will piss me off, is some half assed "soft rebuild" that leaves us in limbo.

Soft rebuild per EF
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>pensfan21</b></div><div>I think Guentzel to SEA makes a ton of sense actually. Although I will say "soft rebuild" sounds to me like they are going full blown rebuild but trying to ease into it and frame it differently. Friedman mentioned he thinks they'll try and collect assets for 2-3 years. At that point it's basically a rebuild.</div></div>
I think that's what they do around the big three of Crosby Malkin Letang -- I think Karlsson probably stays bc of his NMC and cap hit, but if the Pens get a really good offer, they will approach hum about moving.

I would not trade Jake, just give him the 3.25 of Carter plus his 6 mil he is making rn and let 77 go but I agree on this trade, getting 2 good prospects is better than a guy like Kuz. The first is to much tho

The best thing long term for the penguins franchise would be to lose some tight games in the next month and fall out of the playoff picture and flip guentzel for a 1st plus a good prospect maybe more depends on how many teams get involved… this does not mean PIT could not resign Jake in the off-season but if we were to trade him I doubt we would… obviously I’d hate to see guentzel leave, he would be a great career penguin, if he stayed in PIT till retirement no one would complain but the sooner the pens start trying to be terrible again and start building for the future the better the next era of penguins hockey will turn out

keeping guentzel
Outsider Perspective: I am in the Pittsburgh needs to do a full rebuild camp. Before Dubas arrived in Pits I couldn't see a way where they would be a cup contender going into this year. I thought they should work on getting younger.
Adding Smith for a 3rd. Good move but for the wrong team in my mind. It made them older.
Adding Karlsson. Again wrong team and 10m cap was too much.
Adding Acciari. Good move. Right team. He is older but his cap is low and would help in a complete tear down scenario.
Resigning Jarry Expensive. Good goalie but I thought they should go for a cheap cap tandem.
Adding Graves. I actually liked this signing. Reasonable cap hit, solid #4 dman. Younger guy.
Adding Eller. Didn't love the move based on his age and cap. Not terrible but already adding Acciari, it felt a bit redundant. One or the other. The other guy should have been in his 20s.
I do think the best bet for Pits is to sell Guentzel and to talk with Crosby, Malkin and Letang. See if they want to be moved to a competitor for their final years. Crosby would fit PERFECTLY on Colorado, for example.
They can either do a full rebuild and be competitive in a few years again. Or be mediocre for the next few years with Crosby and Malkin, not collect any assets and be irrelevant for the next 8-10 years.
Those are just my thoughts :)

You're protecting on too many players.
DET trade is not the right team.
You can get a better prospect for Pettersson I would think.
Smith trade is probably a pick too much.
That EDM return is just for taking on Campbell. Need a return for Jarry.

Ah ok. Yes, Reaves at 750k for a 7th would be fine.

Would require us giving up a ton. I think the team might be sellers at the deadline and rebuild end of season. And if we are truly that close to a rebuild it's not worth giving up picks. When you overhaul the roster completely and it still has the exact same issues as last year that means that either the coach needs removed or our days of contending are over. Or it could mean both. They're not going to fire Sullivan and if they do it might be too late.</div></div>
We are at the stage of pretending to contend. If the owners don’t get real soon we will look like SJ in a few seasons.

Doesn't need to be anything crazy, but just someone who can protect our net better. POJ and Ruhwedle are fine, but I just think that is what the team is missing most so it's more about what type of player we need than them being bad. Peeke is good, Hakanpaa would be good too. Also think we consider moving Rakell. Like him a lot but if we could get two players that cost around 2.5, one for third line and one for top two lines I think that gives us way more depth.</div></div>
Couldn't agree more on net front presence. Feel like that third pair gets pushed around a lot and in turn is negative on whomever is in Goal.

The fact that it still looks the same and are making the same mistakes despite having a complete roster overhaul is really concerning. Sometimes dynasties just fizzle out, regardless of the core still playing at an elite level. I hope that's not the case, but I think a rebuild or a coaching change might be the only two viable options at this point.</div></div>
Trust me I know all about that 25yrs of buying at the TDL and trying to keep the streak alive even though they really didn't have a chance. Now it was partially because they didn't want Mike Illitch's last memory of the team to be a losing one. But I'd give it a bit longer Detroit didn't add a dman like Karlsson in those last couple of seasons. Especially after he put up a ridiculous 101 points the season before. Pittsburgh has the one of most experienced teams in the league it shouldn't take much before that have things figured out.

I don't even know anymore man lol. I'm not saying Sully is without blame - because he's not - but I think it's hard to blame the system or the coaching for where they are right now. Outside of the PP of course. They're out-possessing, out-shooting, out-chancing, and out-expecting the other team on what seems like a nightly basis. At some point it's just on the players to finish some chances and not leave people wide open in front of the net.

Sullivan needs to go. The team needs a new voice. He's playing the same system since 2016, but this core isn't in their late 20's anymore.
They are beyond soft. This is the team/roster he wanted. I don't think Dubas will sit by and let the season wilt away. I would think Sullivan needs to start feeling the heat. They've won one playoff round since 2018. It's not like them struggling is new. They/Sullivan just don't change anything. Jake-Sid-Rust 1st line forever. They will fix everything!!
