What is Samsonov’s trade value?</div></div>
Caps fans would prefer to trade Samsonov, but management thinks he has higher potential. They protected him over Vanecek in the expansion draft. Hard to say what his trade value is, because his numbers haven't been good.

Why would the Caps do that? Mantha's the best player in the trade.

Tom Wilson, the new Clarkson
It's an overpayment, but Wilson is much better than all the haters make him out to be. If he continues to develop at a reasonable rate, he'll be an effective top-6 winger with a dominating physical game. The contract is a gamble, but one with a good chance to pay off.

My attempt at Karlsson
Way too much for an overrated dman who will get massively overpaid. He'd improve the Caps offensively, but his defense is worse than Niskanen's. Caps would be better off not making that trade and just signing Orpik for the 3rd pair.

He cleared waivers near the end of last season. Wouldn't surprise me if he did again.
That said, I'd keep Bowey as 7D and let Jerabek walk.

Taking Shape - Low Risk Moves Left
I don't see Chiasson as much of an improvement over the younger players stuck in Hershey for lack of space in DC. Gersich, Barber, and Walker all need NHL time to develop.
And Carlson DID score more with Kempny than earlier in the season. Prior to Feb. 22 (Kempny's first game with the Caps) he had 47 points in 60 GP. Afterwards, he had 21 points in 22 GP plus 20 points in 24 playoff games. Now it's obviously a small sample size, but that's an increase of .11 points per game. Might not have been due to Kempny, but he was a lot better than Orpik on the 2nd pair and Djoos still needs to work on his defense. Worst case, Caps can trade Kempny or put him on the 3rd pair. They won't lose Djoos because of Kempny's deal.

I wouldn't bring back Chiasson, but solid roster otherwise.
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Eli</b></div><div>Curious to see whether Copley and Samsonov together are good for as many games as Grubauer. Having one of the best backups in the league brought Holtby into the playoffs fresh and ready to win. In past years he's been so busy trying to prove he's the starting goalie throughout the regular season that by the time the playoffs rolled around, he was in pain and ineffective. Same thing forced Fleury out of Pittsburgh. Losing a center who can win 60% of his faceoffs, take 75% of them behind the red line, and still have an average-range plus/minus is pretty significant. Losing a backup who plays 35 games is pretty significant. The other teams will be thinking about how to improve. Washington should be, too. Giving Kempny 10M for one assist is a nail in their chances for 2019.</div></div>
I could see a new backup being brought in, but might be worth giving Copley a shot first.
As for Kempny, I strongly disagree. His value isn't in his offense- it's in how he can support Carlson, freeing him up to use his offense. 4 years is longer than I expected, but it's not a terrible deal.
Losing Beagle would be the biggest blow. His faceoff and defensive/PK abilities will be hard to replace.

Good lineup except for that 3rd pair. Need to send Ness to Hershey, put Bowey as 7D, and bring in a steadier partner for Djoos.

What does Burra have to do with top-6 forwards? He's a 3rd liner, or maybe a mediocre 2nd liner.
We need Orpik for depth on defense - although I'd be fine trading him and signing a different 3rd pair dman for less. We need Beagle for faceoffs and defensive ability - he's more important than Burra. DSP isn't as important, but he's a solid bottom-6 player who will be cheap.
With this roster, keeping Burra means losing at least 2 other players. He's not worth it.

No. Just no. Eller as 2C and Stephenson as 3C likely moves the Caps out of Cup contention. That defensive group looks good, but won't make up for the poor forward group.

It's because a lot of my fellow Caps fans ignore the facts and continue to argue that Burakovsky is a top line player. He is a middle-6 scoring winger who has yet to break 40 points and is injury-prone. He could maybe be better if he could stay healthy - he has offensive creativity and a nice shot.

This is one of the most reasonable rosters I've seen. My only issue is that 4th - might be good for 8-9 minutes per game under Trotz.
I definitely agree regarding Orpik. Buying him out doesn't help, but trading him and replacing him with an UFA could work.

I'd be fine with trading Orpik, as long as there's a viable replacement. Bowey, Lewington, and Siegenthaler are not that yet.

Stephenson, Gersich, and Boyd. Or put one of them on the 4th and bump DSP up.
Orpik is overpaid, true. If the Caps could trade him and replace him with a cheaper option, I'd be fine with that. But Bowey clearly showed this season that he's not ready to be a fulltime NHLer.

You're also wrong about your first point. Not having Burakovsky limits the scoring depth immensely. It puts pressure on Stephenson to be something he's not (a scoring winger) instead of a playmaker. And if there is ever an injury in the top 6, there is no natural fill in.
Beagle's role can be filled by Stephenson, or my preferred option Boyd. Mostly because i like Chandler's skillset on the wing and his ability to use his speed and passing from up the boards.</div></div>
No one would give a 1st rounder for Burra. He's a 3rd line, MAYBE 2nd line forward. All of you are greatly overstating his ability.
And the Caps have no one who can manage what Beagle does on faceoffs, defense, and PK.

All the skills except being able to score on open shots. He hasn't lived up to the hype and isn't worth $3M. If he's still with the Caps, we'll see another 30-40 point season.

That would make the team worse. Beagle as 4C/top PK is more valuable to the Caps than Burra on the 3rd. And Burra isn't being traded for nothing.
