Retooling quickly
Ship has sailed on Markstrom, too old and not putting up the numbers to justify paying him his cap hit in addition to a 1st and Spence.

Ullmark waives for security
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Celtics21</b></div><div>Keeping PLD and doing nothing stands a better chance of getting him fired than acquiring a goalie who likely would provide a significant improvement in that system to what you have. It’s a stronger argument than 8.5m to a 3rd line center with a polarizing personality.
It also frees up cap space to keep Roy or Arvidssen. Both if you sign Byfield to a bridge deal.
Getting traded in season while being an expiring is different than choosing your location, moving your family, and getting security, Not sure how that isn’t obvious.
He’d likely be living away from his family if traded during the season and have to do the move next year. It’s less change for his kids and less separation. Its why his current no trade clause isn’t as relevant because if a team is willing to extend him, its a significant parameter that could change his mind,
He doesn’t even consider it without an extension with no trade protections (which the Kings seem willing to give).</div></div>
PLD believe it or not is putting up more points per game than he did in with the Jets his first year. He has definitely improved and if he can return to a 60 point player (likely) there is no reason for LA to do this.
LA has had excellent results with budget goaltending this season and was able to make it through the trade deadline without a goalie update because of this. Talbot is an all star this season and both goaltenders have put up top-10 numbers while costing less than $2M against the cap.
If Blake sells PLD at any loss, he deserves to be fired.
1. He signed Petersen a mistake that he needed to take on money to lose,
2. As part of that trade he has traded away Walker who has turned into a first,
3. Blake fired one of the most expensive coaches in the league after extending him a season
He is on super thin ice, and to even ask ownership to make this trade could be enough to get him fired. If Blake can't get LA out of the first round and takes a loss on PLD he is almost positively fired. PLD trending to continuing to impove as a 25 year old who has shown he can bounce back from bad seasons is exactly why you want to buy him at a discount. If LA makes it out of the second round and PLD is part of that, Blake looks like a genius and gets to remain a GM and that awful contract becomes much more easy to deal with.
Honestly most fans don't watch PLD and haven't seen that he is much closer to a top-6 center than the worst contract in the league.

Dubas and Blake have a history together, he wants to do a quick rebuild, Kaliyev to the Pens means he doesn't hurt LA too much if the trade works. At $2.5M Riley Smith has done his best work in the Pacific Division. I believe there was a rumored trade earlier. We know Smith has sucked in Pitt, hoping he looks closer to what he did in Vegas.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>tkecanuck341</b></div><div>They can't afford it.
Also, Arvidsson hasn't left yet. Because he missed so much of this season with injuries, Arvidsson is eligible for the Connor Brown contract with games played bonuses. This allows them to defer all but the league minimum salary to 2025-26 when the cap will be $92.1M.</div></div>
I think we were gifted Byfield somewhat slumping to the end of the season in regards to his contract, but Gavrikov's game has made me incredibly worried about moving forward without Roy. If Roy walks we will need to get not only a shutdown defenseman, but better defensive forwards to offset his loss.
If Arvidsson returns under such a contract, I am totally ok with most of the Kings forward group, and Arvy does seem happy here, but he is also 31. Trying to be an unbiased fan, he should be chasing his 3-4 year most guaranteed money contract with his injury history. But if he gifts us that type of contract, I would be over the moon.

The Kings need someone under $3M to help fill Arvidsson's departure. Smith is one year removed from a 26-goal season on a pacific division rival and is defensively responsible. He could play an Iafallo role on the top line allowing Byfield and Fiala to wing PLD.
The Kings have already been rumored to be circling around this player.

That line succeeding could be the future core of the Kings.
But overall, it puts a legit scoring threat on every line as well as a defensively responsible forward on every line. PLDs line scoring is good, but if that line can be defensively responsible that will be huge. If they line up against 4th lines or Lizzos line, we should see something happen.

That top line would be pretty crazy.
However, as an unbiased fan If Drai comes with an extension I'd want Jack Hughes or Hischer. Drai is a legit #1 and I think he wants to move to a team that sees that.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Black61</b></div><div>Hes making 8.5 million played a good chunk of the season with fiala and got good pp time. Sometimes there isnt a excuse</div></div>
Fiala has been paired up with PLD for a little over 215 minutes, under 20% of his total ice time this season during which Fiala potted 8 goals. The issue was that line pairing was incredibly defensively problematic as that same duo allowed 10 goals. Fiala gels much better with Danault, but PLDs game has also substantially improved. PLD definitely had issues for the start of the season, but since the coaching change he looks a lot closer to the 65 point center the Kings acquired and the better defensive prowess of those players has brought them back together recently as a line. The 2nd unit in general has been poor for LA, I can't necessarily say it is PLD alone there, as he is the highest goal scorer on the second unit.

Still doesn't address the shutdown part, Clarke needs a vet to grow his game with. I think someone like TJ Brodie would be an upgrade over Englund or Moverare who both play a traditional shutdown role.

Yeah, Jarry has not played well enough at his cap hit to justify much value going back. The Kings have got better goaltending collectively from Talbot and Rittich for a fraction of what Jarry costs.

He has played most of his time with Laffy who up until this year had little to no professional experience. His line mates haven’t exactly set him up for success he is the best goal scorer on the second pp unit and has shown a huge uptick when taking over for Kopitar or Danault. He’ll be fine.

Only If Marky Waives
Markstrom is 34, has a $6M cap hit, and can't break above a .905 AV% averaged over the last two years.
The Kings were able to pick up better statistical goaltending bargain hunting for vets at a 1/3 of his cap hit combined (Talbot + Rittich = #$1.875M).
If the Kings are giving up high picks they want an Ullmark type of player coming back, otherwise they will go back to the vet well and wait for Portillo and Ingham who have looked very good.
