The Kings moved out Durzi, Faber, Walker (which are 1, 2, 3 on their respective teams in ice time) and Grans. Have Doughty, Roy, Spence with Clarke still in AHL (and this kid Sparkes who people seem to like). And Mania.
Thats some log jam.

Well don't trade Samuelsson for starters, would think DeMelo is going to be looking for a raise.

For sure but you "buy" a guy based on expectations.
Ullmark-Swayman fit the "Tandem" category since pre season and what the coach/GM said and haven't changed at all. In fact it is a near "perfect" split.
LAK started as Tandem and then 1A/1B and maybe even going into Workhorse/Backup soon.

What I mean is that Swayman was never what I categorize as a "Backup"; hence why I suggest the term get better defined; it makes it seem like he is on the same goalie start expectation as Anthony Stolarz or Kevin Lankinen.

I think we have to "redefine" what a backup is. See my post above

I've been tracking goalie contracts and deployment for a few years now.
For 2023 the Avg Cap Hit per Start = $88,758
For reference, I have found a range like this seems to hold fairly true for deployment (major injuries aside):
Workhorse Goalie = 59-72 starts (80% start rate or 4 out of 5 games)
1A = 47-58 starts (65% start rate or 2 out of 3 games)
Tandem = 36-46 starts (50% start rate; every other or "hot hand" rotation that evens out)
1B = 24-35 starts (35% start rate or 1 out of 3 games)
Backup = 10-23 starts (20% start rate or 1 out of 5 games)
Spot Duty/Call-up = 1-9 starts (injury fill-in from AHL, rookies on ELC slide, or the "old school" backup that only played in B2B games)
Cap inflation next year is expected to be around 5%; thus projecting a $93,542 figure (the actual will be less since many AAV's carryover; but the UFA/RFA's are unkown)
This means the $3,150,000 contract is roughly "average price" for 34 starts per year; thus an above average 1B goalie.
Another way of looking at is the Habs committed 41% of an average team's goalie budget to Montembeault.
In that sense this seems perfectly fine. The question for Montreal (a team coming off one of the most expensive goalie contracts ever) is are they trying to lowball the position (Avs, Kings, Coyotes) due to lots of pending RFA deals; or do they see someone else as their 1A long term (Primeau, Fowler ?).
The good thing about this deal is they have flexibility either way (and with lack of NMC/NTC).

If he torpedo's that entire line don't play him there.....seems easy enough. They could literally healthy scratch him for the rest of season if he plays THAT bad.

I frankly cant understand lopsided voting on "No", 1 year prove it deal for a future HoF with plenty of winning experience. Not to mention the overwhelming chemistry with Cat. If he struggles off the surgery so be it, but the risk-reward is favorable given it's not a long term commitment. No question a W for the team.

There’s a reason Carolina doesn’t wanna give him a long term deal. He’s already started to decline.

And that trade for Zadorov is a MASSIVE overpay
If u think that has ANY chance of happening, idk what to tell ya- other than it’s crazy to think we’d give that up for a LD when it’s already a position of strength- not to mention, Zadorov is a UFA after this season

Quoting: KingofRnR

Yeah, okay, I got no gripes with you, your opinion or what you feel your Teams needs are, you should know better than me
I do see a need/role for Zadorov on pretty much any Team and I’d say he’s been more consistent and brings a lot more than Jokiharju, but no worries
Is Kreb’s available and if so, what’s the cost!?

Jokiharju is a RD playing well with Power
Zadorov is a LH shot
Even if he’s better than Jokiharju, he isn’t a better FIT for what we NEED
If he was RH it would be a different story, but he’s not…..
As for Krebs:
Saying he’s playing poorly isn’t all that accurate
He’s been asked to play a heavily defensive center role which has clearly affected his offensive output, but he’s developing in that role & Sabres Mgmt aren’t showing any signs of wanting to dump him
He was a “must have” part of the Eichel deal, so it’s safe to say he’s well liked by the ppl who matter
And while *some* fans might be frustrated by not seeing offense from him, that simply doesn’t equate to our GM wanting to trade him
Do i think Krebs is untouchable?
No
But i do think we have plans for him being here a while
So i don’t think he’s all that “available”
Not unless it’s as part of a package for a legit #1 goalie,
or maybe a RD like Rasmus Andersson?
Something like Andersson for Krebs, Jokiharju & a 1st ?
Which I’m sure seems low for you,
since u don’t seem to think highly of Krebs or Jokiharju
But that would be my guess- and yes, I’m admitting it’s a GUESS, as to the type of deal the Sabres might be willing to make
Maybe we’d add in another of our young prospects as well
I’m not sure, as I’m clearly not our GM
But i am pretty sure we aren’t gonna dump guys that our Mgmt is proven to like- not for cheap anyways

Sure you’re only guaranteed 2 years of McDavid, but that’s where you bet on yourself to be successful with him and convince him to stay (can even compete against Toronto since he’d still be close to home).

Still VERY RISKY to put together a team that might not be good enough to win a Cup
It’s giving up A TON & if we don’t win a Cup, &/or McDavid doesn’t sign an extension when it’s time, then what does this team look like??
It would totally tear down everything we’ve just suffered to build
Also, & most importantly,
EDM isn’t gonna move McDavid- not unless they lose their minds
