Description

So Seattle can't retain and trade a player back to the team they took him from in the expansion draft, but can they get around these rules? Is the following one of those "technically legal but frowned upon" scenarios?

Here's a half-assed trade proposal as an example:

-Seattle moves Donskoi (50% retained) to Buffalo for their 2022 3rd and the lowest of their 2023 2nd
-Buffalo retains another 50% on Donskoi and moves him to Colorado for a 2022 3rd, a 2023 2nd, and Alex Beaucage

It ends up here:

-Seattle gets a couple decent picks for moving Donskoi and retaining almost $2M for another year
-Buffalo downgrades their 2022 3rd round pick and potentially their 2023 2nd but also gets Beaucage (in exchange for retaining $975K for a year)
-Colorado gets Donskoi at $975k for the rest of this year and next but gives up a couple picks and Beaucage

I think if both moves happen within a 24 hour window, Bettman can shut it down. If they were smart enough to cool their heels for a week, I don’t think he could. You have to make it look like its not a three way trade.

Based on the clause it seems like it permitted however I could see the NHL blocking this move bc it doesnt follow the "spirit" of the rules

I’m thinking they shut it down. But making it a 4 team swap where SEA doesn’t retain but the others do…. This would get complex and complicated but it’s the loophole you’re looking for

no. avs can not have a retained donskoi back on the team for a full year (july 20, 22)

Don’t see why Beaucage would be of interest to the Sabres
We have many other forward prospects that are more high end than him
He’d just be lost in the shuffle here behind too many others
