Spooner auction: minimum starting bid = any 2018 2nd

Rules: auction ends May 3rd 11:59pm
Only 2018 picks count
Only b or better prospects count: to be a b prospect a player must have been drafted in the first 3 rounds or a late pick who has risen dramatically since being drafted.
I hold sole discretion of value judging unless a case of very similar value which would indicate a tie. In result of a tie, the person who offered that value first is declared winner. Any bid that meets the starting criteria can win if not outbid. He will be sold to highest bidder even if only one bid is established as long as the starting criteria of a 2018 2nd has been met or exceeded.

Cehlarik is being kept because I thought he was better than Heinen last season, but injuries have derailed him this season. Czarnik is tricky because he doesn't really have a spot, but I know he's a good player. He'd probably be used to upgrade to a better player as part of a package. I don't really see any reason to trade him as he's a great depth fill in player and an RFA who I can probably retain for cheap.

Holden is the #8 defenseman right now. You're asking for more than he was worth in real life and everyone knows that A. Rentals have less value on here than in real life and B. Picks and prospects have more value on here than in real life.

@FryesLeapMaine Saw your post about sweetening a deal to take on Beleskey, and I might be interested - what would you think about something like this?

Beleskey + 2018 2nd + 2019 5th for Brian Gibbons

Gives you the cheapest rental possible who is actually scoring at a good rate this year for NJD (2.23 pts/60) and I can handle Beleskey for a couple more years while I finish off my rebuild. To me, the burden of the Beleskey contract is worth a little more than a 3rd, and Gibbons is probably worth a 5th as a pure rental. Something to consider... if we were to do something like this it would be in March because I'm out of Feb deals, so let me know what you think.

Edit: just saw Gibbons is out for another week with a broken thumb. Not sure if that would change anything, just giving you full disclosure.

I don't want Gibbons. I'm going to sit on a 3rd for someone to take Beleskey. I think a 2nd is too steep at this point in time and I might just buy him out after the year is over. It'd be like the retaining in real life only it'd last 2 seasons longer. That could end up being my primary option as I'd get to use the pick myself to add another good prospect to my collection.

I could potentially take Beleskey but I'd want better compensation than a 3rd and would prefer the compensation to either be at the bare minimum a 1st in 2018 or a 1st + in 19

There are more than a few teams that won't take him for a 3rd, but the majority of the league is trying to make the playoffs. This deal isn't for them to want or like. It's for a team which has 10 to 15M extra that knows for certain that they'll have atleast 5M extra they won't touch. If you put yourself in the shoes of a team that had 5M extra that you knew you weren't going to use for 2 seasons while you rebuild, a 3rd rounder wouldn't look like bad value. It'd basically be a free 3rd rounder for something that your not even going to utilize otherwise.

So in a Nash for Spooner deal, how about just some upgrades coming my way? You're 1st is going to be late and my 2nd could be top 10, 15th at the latest. And id like to get my hands on St Louis kids woll for Binnington (Ahl all-star, ready now, playing for Providence). I'd put a condition on the 1st/2nd swap, if the Blues make the I'll just get a 3rd.

Advanced analytics mostly point to him being a worse player than Ryan Spooner this season. I am aware that he is actually a little bit better and would make a slightly better impact but it's like trading a 2nd line RW who I can have for as many years as I want in exchange for a slightly better RW who I'll only have for a quarter of a season because I'm not going to have the money to outbid people in UFA. Adding more pieces to an already terrible deal will not work.

Even if I could, what would I have to pay? Do I have to give more than a single year to a 33 year old? Nash definitely has some positive features that are better fits than Spooner to the real life Boston Bruins, but if I decided to sign Spooner to a 4 year deal which would take him until the age of 30 or if I signed Rick Nash to 1 year deals for 4 seasons until the age of 37, who would I get more out of over that period of time? I think Ryan Spooner is still getting better and unfortunately Rick Nash hit a major snag about 3 years ago and like everyone else who ages he's on the way down. It's an easy decision to decline Spooner + for Nash given my current situation.
