ARZ wouldn't do the Backstrom trade, and he'd use his NTC for sure. EDM wouldn't give up their pick in the 1st round, knowing their luck, it could be in the top 3. MTL trade is intriguing.

As a Caps fan, if they decided they wanted to move on from Backy then I think they would do this deal.

i think if you are looking for that 1st rounder domi would need to be on the table since you are getting strome to replace him and play with his brother. sekeras contract is bad but not horrid with 3 years left and arizone could use him and the only actual good player you are giving up for edmonton prior to domi was fischer so with domi and maybe a 3rd on top of it but after that both teams are getting what they are looking for mostly.

So if I got it correctly, it's fine if I replace Fischer with rights to Domi and a 3rd round pick?

Who knows where he wants to live? Phoenix is beautiful this time of year. I bet it isn't even snowing this week.

I mean, I think the Caps are going to beat the Penguins this year, and Carlson will sign for just 7Mx8yrs, and they'll all throw huge parties all summer long, regardless of who wins the Cup, and that Backstrom and Ovechkin both make each other better, and should keep playing together as much as they can because it looks like fun.

But claiming no player wants to go to a team that has a bad record insults the millions of people who live in the half of all hockey cities whose teams are average or below at any given moment. We should all try to stop doing that, probably. If you can't relate as a Leafs fan, you must be new. Welcome.

Why would Edmonton do this deal? I am genuinely interested to know.

      For three reasons
      1. They need strengthening to their right wing (Panik, Fischer)
      2. They need strengthening to their defense, especially a RHD (Demers)
      3. They get rid of toxic contract (Sekera)

I didn't say that b/c of ARZ's bad record. To be honest, most players would be really excited to go. But, Backstrom's been a Cap for life and he's probably settled in Washington. I don't think he'd want to move.

This roster is $6M+ over the Yotes internal budget. Or approximately 1 Nicklas Backstrom. So you can understand why the Coyotes can't make that WSH trade even if they wanted to. They need the 6OV and Crouse on ELCs. Most fans don't recognize the importance of cheap, effective contracts for AZ.

I'm curious if Edmonton is going to bother qualifying Ryan Strome. Panik outproduced R. Strome, particularly once he came to AZ. Demers is better than Sekera. Is the pick at around 10 that much more valuable than Fischer? That's debatable, depending on who falls in the draft but Fischer has a lot of value to the Coyotes as the only right handed winger in the top 9.

The Coyotes GM made it sound at the end of year press conference like he's set to make a pretty big trade at the draft. He said he laid the groundwork at the trade deadline. Personally I'm nervous that Domi or Perlini are going to get shipped out and blossom on another squad.

Overall its not bad but I'd like to suggest one thing though, have less quantity in your trades. A lot of people do this btw. They think keep on adding pieces until the sum of all pieces is equal to 1 good piece. Unless its a straight rebuilding team that wants picks and prospects, this rarely happens. Take off the extra little bit and replace with a 1 decent piece.

Example: Bla-bla for Stepan + a 5th 2020 + Dean Stewart + Conor Garland >> This has virtually no added value. Scrap those meaningless pieces and add a 3rd rounder for example. Consolidate some of the quantity for quality. It doesn't change all that much in the end and it actually gives the other team something they want.

I think overall this roster is pretty good. It sounds like neither side needs the Edmonton trade, especially if Strome 1 might be UFA and just show up to chill with Strome 2 all on his own.

I don't think the Caps should trade Nicklas Backstrom at all, and it sounds like Arizona would demand some cheap young talent coming back to balance the loss of their contributions, but Arizona's forward group looks fabulous with him. Ceci and Galchenyuk are pretty great additions.

The real question from Arizona's side isn't just whether they can massage the cap numbers a bit (skipping the Edm trade might save, what, 4M? So they need to cut 2M elsewhere?) but whether this team will win as much right away as they will win long term when their draft picks mature. I think that adding a #1 center, a 30 goal wing, and a top pair defenseman could do a lot for any team, so as much as the pieces they're giving up have value, I'd like to be the first in this thread to try to assess what they're getting back, and I think that it's a trip to the playoffs next Spring. The question is whether they keep enough young, developing talent around to make that into four or five such trips, and build up their following again. A lot of that depends on Backstrom's and Galchenyuk's long term salary demands on their next deal. Based on how underpaid they are on their current contracts, I don't see them demanding huge raises, especially if the team is doing well and they're having fun, being stars, and enjoying some warm weather.

So trying to take my own personal hope that Backstrom stays in Washington out of this, I think you've built a good team here.
