Our D is Fine

Created by: buds16
Team: 2018-19 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Aug. 9, 2018
Published: Aug. 9, 2018
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
We have 5 guys that can play on most rosters and a few rookies looking to make a mark. Our forwards will dominate puck possession which will make our D's job even easier. I predict record seasons for both Reilly and Gardiner. I believe this will be Carricks year too, as he will get a bit more time(unless a rookie catches fire) on the ice so that Babs can shelter Dermont to protect his advancement.

I know the line up doesn't include any changes but our team is good and will get better with these guys. Plus if we are looking like heavy favorites coming into trade deadline, we have a tone of room to make a deal

explain how. For a team with such a young D core, they were 12th in GAA doing better then the likes of pittsburgh, tampa and minnesota.

Cause folks look down roster name, don't recognize players and therefore they must be bad. Yea it amazing all other teams have such great bottom end Dmen.

I'm not a believer in Carrick anymore. Hoping that Ozhignov or even Holl can fill that position. But I like Borgman, so it's possible that Dermot goes to the right side.

As Rodzi mentions, the stats prove anyone that says otherwise wrong from last year. Defense is also not only played by 2 players. Its all 6! And with the ability to constantly throw out JT, AM and NK and nevermind the coaching, our D is not only fine, it will improve upon last year!

I agree. I think Carrick will get the first shot and if he plays well enough he stays in the lineup. I think what Shanny has done best is create competition within the team, especially on the back end. Its best case if one of those guys pushes his way into the lineup. Otherwise they will develop in the marlies and dominate down there.

They were also 28th in shots against. Worse than all the teams you mentioned and better only than the Islanders, Rangers and Panthers.

I recognize all the names I just don't think they are a strong unit. I like Reilly but he isn't a premier D. Gardnier is a great offensive player but his defensive lapses are shocking at times. Ron hainsey is a fine bottom pair guy on a deep D team, which the leafs are not and you have him first pair. Zaitsev took a huge step back and is a question mark to be a consistent quality D man. I like Dermott so hopefully he gets some time to shine and Carrick is a 7th D/AHL guy to me.

I want to make a crack about Gardiner setting a record in elimination games, but I won't.

I think if you had - and maybe you do and I missed it - someone to give Hainsey a chance to ease his minutes and rest for the playoffs - and maybe think for Gardiner - you'd be set. I also don't think you have a hell of a lot of room to take on blue line contracts (unless they're one year expiring deals) because you have to keep that cap room for next year's extensions.

Who's gonna replace Hainsey after this year, anyway? NZ ready for top pairing minutes?

This year is definitely not to year to be making changes. They got Ozhiganov on the RD and I think he will get a shot. I’m not sure if he will play in the AHL or make the jump right away like Zaitsev. If he doesn’t stick this year then give Liljegren a shot next year. Gardiner will be gone next year and hopefully Dermott can take his spot on the 2nd pairing,

The AGM is all about making changes to better a team’s situation. In the Leafs’ case, there will be significant raises for 3 core RFAs this year and next which limits possibilities. In reality, it will have to be a waiting game to see how the prospects pan out before making significant changes,

I don't think the Gardiner cracks will end until he moves on or makes up for it. lol

As with any team, we would hope one of our young guys make the lineup and the guys currently in the lineup can eat up more minutes. if not then we need to fill the spot with a vet on a short term deal. There are a lot of thirty something guys looking for a spot next year and for those that want a good chance at a cup, we are in a good position to sign one for a bargain.

watch where the shots are being taken. if you look at the shot generating chart alot of the shots were taken outside of " the house" So Very ararely doe the leafs allow teams to get in the slot to take shots

Couldn’t agree more same goes for carrick not a bad D just nothing special. Giving it 5 stars for keeping our D and letting our prospects develop

You have just described the Dmen on most teams. So that doesn't make the Leafs Dmen collectively awful, it makes it average or so.
So what if Reilly isn't a premier D., what does that have all to do with overall calibre of Dmen? Karlsson is premier D, and where has it really got the Sens all these years. OEL with Arizona. Hedman has missed to the playoffs almost have of his time with Tampa. All those years St Louis has had some of the better (if only in name recognition Dmen...Pietrangelo, Shattenkirk, Bouemeister, Parayko, it has led to great success?

So shots for and against are a good indication of offensive and defensive efficiencies? Isn't that wildly inaccurate ?
Tell who has the best special unit teams. Team A that scores 2 goals in 10 shot attempts in 6 PP chances or. Team B that scores 0 goals, on 14 shot attempts in 6 PP chances
Team A that allows 0 goals in 14 shots attempts in 6 PK chances or. Team B that allows 2 goals on 10 shot attempts in 6 PK chances.

if shots on goals for and against are a criteria for measuring special teams efficiencies, yep I see your point. Guess the same applies to equal strength shots on goals too.
