Honestly I'm not sure Marner is worth more than Nylander. Nylander can be the kind if player to carry a line while Marner is more of a complimentary player. He also strikes me as the kind of guy who'd take a small cut to help the team.

Marner will put up more points and demand more money. You would be over the cap as it stands if you add the mil more and you need to sign 3 more players.

Putting up more points because you play with JT doesn't mean you get an overpayment contract. It's a market of supply and demand and if another team doesnt have JT like us they won't pay you that much to score less, so why the hell will the leafs pay what other teams won't. He's an RFA and will be in the same Nylander boat. Only difference is Marner wants to play here and he will play ball with this management in the negotiations I guarantee. This post is for 2020/21 so there no reason to think that the cap is 85m, so it's possible even with 23 man roster, this cap is OK. It would be getting to 202/21 with Marleau contract in 2019/20.
The other issue is in 2021/21 and those players coming off ELC expecting raises in their 2021/22 will be a problem when there are no big expiring contracts. I know I'm getting ahead of myself, Leafs are just worried about 2018/19 and 2019/20.

SDA is a middle range prospect, giving him over a mill at this point of his career is pushing it. As for Leivo, Toronto has enough organizational depth in order to let him walk and not take on an over a mill hit. As much as I hate to say it, either Kappi or Brown will have to go. That being said they could be packaged with Carrick for a decent RHD coming back on a reasonable deal. I think the cap is safe, but more moves and smarter signing will be needed in order to get it done.

Read the title. The AAV is a worst case scenario, and 5 years is because this is in 2020-21 meaning his contract would be down to 5 after signing for 7.
