they could for this year, but it puts them in a tough spot next offseason with Matthews, Marner, and Nylander all needing new contracts (not to mention gardiner, kapanen, johnsson, a backup goalie, etc.)

Ohh noo.... we give Nylander a 500k raise (over what we would have given him) and maybe have to trade out a 4th line guy as a result that we wouldn't have before...
Leafs match good night.

Do a two year/6.5....This will make it harder....with only a one year, its easy as TOR has enuf cap space.

1) I'm gonna say it again, offer sheets never happen.
2) Nylander doesn't want a 1 year deal most likely.
3) Leafs match.

You are missing the point and are the same as most fans. There are 3 players between now and next season who are the priority to get signed by Toronto. Marner, Nylander and Matthews. After those guys, the rest will either take their share of what remains or if they want more than that, they'll be traded. Those other guys can be replaced rather easily. The big 3 can't be, you almost always have to draft players like that.

oh i agree that Matthews, Marner, and Nylander are the priority signings but it still puts TOR in a difficult spot with all 3 of them looking for raises in the same offseason

Nylander wouldn’t accept the offer sheet, or he would’ve signed for that in Toronto a month ago.

LOL funny how everyone says leafs match without looking at the future cost Nylander will need to be matched and cannot be traded Marner and Mathews need to be signed and there are some smart GMs that will know where the leafs are come cap time also I love hearing leaf fans rant LMFAO

Its a challenge but it's doable. It'll likely result in some losses on the depth guys, and the defence next year will be cheap and young. However, its manageable and getting the guys that are not easily replaceable locked up is all that matters. Other moves can be made to make the cap easier to manage. But to say losing Kapanen would devastate the Leafs is hilariously wrong.

Every non leaf fan on here says the same thing, paying the top guys bigger money will devestate the team. In reality, paying the big guys the dollars they deserve may result in a loss of one or more depth player (Brown, Johnsson, Kapanen), but they can be replaced by a Marlie for an ELC.

Long term this offer sheet will cost the leafs a player in the long run and I really wonder if the leafs match the offer especially if they are looking out for there future and a SC run

No way nylander signs this... it’s probably 500k less than what we are offering. Nylander doesn’t want a 1 year deal. If you offered this leafs match easily and probably offer more on a 6 year deal.

Too easily matched by the leafs... offer him 8m on 2 years or more and we are hooped.

Oh and gardiner walks at the end of the season... leafs have a maximum of about 28m to sign nylander marner Mathews.... before they need to start moving guys out.

if TOR doesnt match this would only cost COL a 1st and a 3rd (but a 1 year $6M deal is unrealistic). if you increase it to around $7M to $7.5M AAV for 5 years the compensation is only a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd. If im Sakic i would trade a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd for Nylander in a heartbeat, especially since we still have OTT 1st and 3rd rounders this year

Would have to be over 8m.... leafs could sign nylander at 7.5m and trade him in the off season if they choose to match. We have at least 8.5m we could spend on nylander this season and still pay performance bonuses.

Its the same sentiment from everyone, "If you give Nylander 7 million a year you won't be able to bring in anyone else and the team will be like Chicago". That is hilariously wrong, Chicago's problem is they are paying their core the big dollars after their best hockey has been played, now they can't carry the team and they have zero space to fix the issue. Toews isn't worth 10.5 million now, he was worth big bucks when he was 24-28 but not in his 30's.

Paying Toronto's core what they deserve does one thing, provide the Leafs with long term cost certainty. It sets their cap scenario for the next 7-8 years, they will have enough assets to fill out the lineup the whole time and also have the best player development department in the league (They spend more on player development than many teams spend on their entire organization.) So they'll have a supply of players who can step up when depth guys do too good and price themselves out of town. TO doesn't have cap problems, teams with cap problems have 2 types of problems. 1) They have bad contracts (guys making 3-6 million who are not even close to good enough to earn that contract and therefore can't be easily traded) 2)They are paying older guys big money for what they did in the past (Chicago, LA, Anahiem etc)

Toronto doesn't have any of those issues.

He doesn’t want a bridge deal... as I said leafs would match add term probably make it 2-3 years nylander would take it. This is a Lewis gross negotiating tactic... does hold outs all the time. Nylander will get a 6yr deal between 6-7m. He’s not looking to be traded.

Now ask yourself if Colorado can afford this next season? The answer is probably not... lots of rfa’s to resign for your team next season as well. If it looks like a possibility of that does nylander sign knowing he could be moved to a team like Ottawa the season after?
