On the basis the Leafs do sign him before the Dec 1 deadline (seems less and less likely as each day passes), his deal, for this season, will be pro-rated based on games remaining. He will be arbitration after this season, so regardless of what happens this season, the Leafs and Nylander could wait and go to arbitration and see what he's worth. Unlike other sports, baseball being the best example, most players don't get to arbitration and the coverage this process gets comes off as quite adversarial between team and player. It is my guess that the post-ELC RFA process will be reshaped in the next CBA, because clearly there are some holes in the current process.
