couldn't he take you to arbitration and get a raise from the 10 million?

His QA would be 10m, we are not even allowed to offer him that contract by cba rules.

Arbitration isn't the issue, the issue is the qualifying offer. This is a sort of gentlemans handshake idea that's been thrown around. Essentially, you give him the big contract with a hand shake agreement that he signs the other one at his first convenience which I believe is the trade deadline.

The risk with that is, what if the player decides he doesn't want to stay here, the team has to offer a qualifying offer to get him or he becomes a FA. The qualifying offer has to be his last years salary plus 10% or something like that so in this case its a massive qualifying offer or the player walks.

I should also point out that there is zero sarcasm or malice in my tone, I'm genuinely happy we have found some common ground today.

On the basis the Leafs do sign him before the Dec 1 deadline (seems less and less likely as each day passes), his deal, for this season, will be pro-rated based on games remaining. He will be arbitration after this season, so regardless of what happens this season, the Leafs and Nylander could wait and go to arbitration and see what he's worth. Unlike other sports, baseball being the best example, most players don't get to arbitration and the coverage this process gets comes off as quite adversarial between team and player. It is my guess that the post-ELC RFA process will be reshaped in the next CBA, because clearly there are some holes in the current process.

Don’t think you saw my first post but his QA would be 10m, contracts over 1m only need to match at 100%. League minimums get 110% everything in between is 105%.

Very risky business that would never work and lead to punishments for cap circumvention. I could even see recaptured cap being applied.

No, it's not possible. Leafs would still be carrying over cap into next year due to Horton and bonuses. And Nylander has no motivation to do sign a long term deal later, so a qualifying offer by the Leafs is now 10m Either way it's 7.38m a a year, more than Leafs might want to pay.

Qualifying offer under RFA rules is last year's salary + 10%

If Leafs didn't then offer Nylander $11 million, he would have the option to become a UFA

Makes about as much sense as turning down a handful of draft picks and adding Plekanec for a playoff push that only got us a Participation ribbon

Then why dont we offer what he is asking for? 1 year @ 8mill? I think the solution is a bridge and we are going to be looking at all this hypotheical stuff regardless. Why not 2@8 and then offer him 8@6 or something like that. Why does it have to be a ridiculous number like 10? I was just throwing out random numbers, not saying these make sense. Its not so much cap circumvention as it is f*cking smart lol.

ONLY a leaf fan would consider Nrylander worth $10 mill.
i hope they do it, then pay Marner $13 mill&Matthews $15 mill. Kapanen will have to settle for $8, y'know, lowly Kessel money..-~

Not a leaf fan though...just thinking a way of getting an end to this Nylander farce.
