I also think it would not happen but its realistic thing that can be done if necessary.. why do you think its not going to happen?

Textbook cap circumvention since Vancouver would get no cap benefit from buying out Marleau. Both teams would get hit with penalties by the league.

League won't allow it. Orpik the league couldn't prove the intent. Washington traded a goalie and a pick with Orpik. He was bought out but not immediately signed by the Caps.

League would step in if the Leafs say Vancouver we are trading you Marleau so you can buy him out for picks and we can re-sign him. Marleau, you waive your NTC and we will resign you after you are bought out. That does not fall under the CBA. If it did then you would see rumor sites and TSN talking about this option. It is not legit and not going to happen. Marleau is a Leaf next year.

How do we petition CapFriendly to install a fix in the software preventing trades of Patty?

Orpik was also not in the 35+ category so Colorado was able to buy him out....Marleau's contract is not allowing it. This is why Marleau will not be bought out

I do agree it won't happen, but the league can't step in on the leafs doing it and not Washington, the leafs add a nobody prospect and they *can't prove* that's not who they wanted anyways

Just wanted to let you know that the buyout can't happen. The buyout window is from 48 hours after the end of the playoffs until June 30th. Outside of that window the Canucks would have to have an arbitration case awarded to a player that would put them over the cap ceiling and would be allowed to another buyout immediately following the arb hearing since Marleau buyout makes no difference in cap hit because it's 35+ contract (his cap hit would remain the same) Marleau would be ineligible.

So to sum up

Any trade involving Marleau with the intent of a buyout would have to be made prior to June 30th and would mean that any team looking to do this would have to be ok with paying him his bonus money.

My point is that if a team trades for Marleau, play him. dont buy him out as you are still stuck with the cap hit

Yes...that is probably what would happen if the teams + Marleau weren't colluding to circumvent the cap...and then...would Marleau ever agree to waive his NMC if it meant not playing in Toronto?

Also, in addition to everything else stated here... I was not aware that the Canucks were in the business of helping the Leafs better?

Which team is going to be so gracious to get us out of the Eriksson, Sutter and Gudbranson contracts?
