Marner offer sheeted and we take picks

Created by: Jtcurls
Team: 2019-20 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: May 4, 2019
Published: May 4, 2019
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Let’s see what this looks like

So here is what it could look like.

1 Marner signs 11600000 x 7 and leafs take 4 firsts from NYR
2. Immediately sign Kapanen and Johnsson to matching 3000000 x 4 contracts. No fear of offer sheets now that leafs are out of cap hell
3 Trade picks to Winnipeg for Trouba. 1st 2nd and 4th plus borgman. It’s a slight over pay by leafs but we can afford it
4 sign Trouba to 6000000 for 6 years. He is thrilled to be out of the peg and our right side looks much better suddenly. Morgan Reilly starts writing acceptance speak for future Norris win.
5 Sadly trade connor brown and Petan to oilers for picks. Dubas doesn’t need picks but has depth at this position and feels sorry for new Oiler GM Ken Holland.
6 sign Hainsey for 1 year to work with Dermott and kill penalties. This allows Sandin and Lillegren to stay with marlies if needed.
7 Use extra money to bring back McIllrenay. Babcock is thrilled to have an upgrade at backup. Leaf players love hearing what the late rounds of the playoffs are like while trying on his Stanley cup ring from Carolina.
8 sign UFA Ennis for 4 th line
9 Sign RFA Puljujarvi to offer sheet. We have the picks and why not over pay him since MLSE can. Arrange for him to live with fellow Finn Kapanen and hope he becomes what we all thought he would.
10 sign zac rinaldo to keep Brian Burke happy and keep everyone else honest.

God that was fun.

Now all we need to find is someone stupid enough to offer sheet Marner and all our problems are solved.

Shame Peter Charelli isn’t still running a team.

Well at least the rangers aren’t that good. Maybe we can win another lottery or two. Or maybe use those picks to add when needed at the trade deadline.

Who knew one move could solve so many problems and we didn’t have to retire marleau or figure out a trade for zaitsev.

Some people a such kill joys. So sign someone else, maybe Meyers or trade for Barrie or offer sheet MCavoy or trade for P k and have preds retain 3 million or do something with Carolina for Hamilton.

The point is you have a ton of things you can do if Marner leaves.

Btw. Trouba is still RFA and leafs can offer arbitration for a year and then sign someone if he leaves.

As was already stated here option 4 is a no go. Losing marner would suck but the leafs still have a great team and 8 first round picks in the next 4 drafts. Plus the added cap space.

Did anyone else look at the next year.. allow me to update you

Dubas would have 15 million plus whatever the cap goes up so let’s say 18 million total available.

Plus we have NYR first pick in 2020, 2021and 2022 and of course our own picks still in place.

He would need to resign Muzzin for say 5 million x 4 years
The entire forward group is back except marleau and Bracco.
Bracco costs maybe 1.5 x 3 since he will be finishing first year in nhl and be a 3 rd liner.
Marleau will be gone.
Dermott needs his second contract. I am guessing bridge deal 3 x 3 million
Sandin and Liligren are now ready for prime time but no new deals yet.
Hainsey is retired but replaced by the kids and saving a million or so.

Add it up and we have 8 million or so to spend. Maybe we bank that so we can resign Andersen next year and can resign Reilly too. Let’s just bring up Puljujärvi to play in Marleau’s spot.

Because he could be great and we can afford to bury him for a year and retrain him

All it costs is money of which we have tons and a 3rd round pick

With all those Offer-sheets flying around TML this season here on this site, no wonder geeky Dubarelli panicked and caved on Matthews. Seems like hes reading this site a lot. I wonder how many depth he will be forced to ship out cause Marner will be "offer-sheeted also".......

I hope Bracco wont get an offer-sheet......and all the Marlies too.....

Yeah. It kinda makes you realize that Mitch should really be playing nice with negotiations. Its not a stretch to see how the leafs could be a better team by not paying him AM money

Yeah. Thats a good point about no one handing out OS.

But riddle me this... if an offer sheet isnt a real threat, and its just bluster and a bluff by Ferris, then why would the leafs ever agree to a penny more than Kucherov?

If it is a real threat, then why wouldn't the leafs take the 4 firsts and still have the budgeted cap space for Marner to play with?

Plus all those 1st round picks as currency to trade for upgrades across the roster or tdl adds. A scenario like you put forward creates all sorts flexibility, and it really is hard to imagine how the leafs become a worse team, short/mid/long term, if it comes to this.

Really looking forward to hearing all Dreger's hot takes and sound logic until this gets resolved..

I sure wish folks would name the team that would "offer sheet" Marner, and that Marner would agree to sign with that team, and see how that team could fit Marner's contract into their cap. Though I admit the Leafs and some point wouldn't match, but still NAME THAT TEAM.

Trouba isn't signing with the Leafs. Gee you trade Brown and his 2.1m cap hit just so you can sign AHLer Pulujarvi 2m? Disrespecting Hainsey at 1.2m.

If you read my posting history I do not think Marner will get offer sheeted. I don’t think he wants to leave and I don’t think anyone will overpay and give up the picks you have to. It would be madness for whoever did it. The whole offer sheet talk is agent and media driven. The whole point was to show that the leafs would perhaps be better if he did. To all the people saying he is going to walk over Dubas and sign for 10 or 11 million because Ferris demands it. Dubas showed last year he will go to the wall if needed and will sit a guy in negotiations if needed.

Trouba has been a pain in the ass on contracts from day 1. He will not get sheeted and I predict will be signing an arb contract for 1 year at right around that figure. The 6 million figure is about right and Toronto is not the peg.

Actually I did not trade him so I could sign Puljujärvi. As you no doubt noticed Jesse was placed in minors so very little of his salary goes against the cap. I signed Puljujärvi because I wanted to show how MLSE financial might could be used to do this. I do not think oilers would match that amount and I think Puljujärvi would happily sign if given a chance.

I traded brown and Petan because I think we can do it with the depth we have at wing and I wanted to sign Hainsey and Mcillrenay and Rinaldo. Those are 3 guys who would make the coach happy at those positions. Hainsey will be 39 next year, the offer of a roster spot in Toronto is not disrespectful it is out of respect respect that the spot is offered. However, he will be 3 pair and PK playing 15 minutes a game maybe 17. Contract I offered is realistic for that. If he can sign for more and wants to move then best to him. Tell me who is going to pay much more.if Hainsey plays in nhl next year it will be because he wants to stay playing @nd isn’t ready to hang it up. The money for a 39 year old isn’t the thing.
