Lets gets Girard

Created by: K_Hab
Team: 2019-20 Montreal Canadiens
Initial Creation Date: Jul. 7, 2019
Published: Jul. 7, 2019
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Add Girard as Col. is stacked at D and could possibly Have Byram playing in the NHL this year. If not they could sign Gardiner to a short term deal without affecting their Cap. Habs give up two very good prospects and and a 1st round pick.
Trade one headache for another with Vegas (Clarkson having the shorter term so MTL has to sweeten). Montreal now has a lot of cap room to sign their RFAs and make a move at the deadline if necessary.

Avs aren't trading Girard for those scraps. Start with Drouin at least, even then, most Avs fan don't want him.

LOL you obviously have never seen Cale Fleury play and know very little about hockey. As a rookie Fleury put up 23 points in 60 games in the AHL and moved up from 3rd pairing to 1st pairing throughout the year until he got injured. Ylonen is a top prospect in the Habs system playing in the SHL who was only made tradeable because of Caufield. Girard put up 1 point in 5 games in the AHL and has never gotten more than 27points in an NHL season. Yes he has a lot of potential, but so far that potential is only second pairing Dman. So potential 2nd to first pairing for 2 potential roster players and a first is more than reasonable.

I'd rather keep those prospects. Girard is good no doubt but... after trading Barrie, I doubt they gonna trade another top 4 D.

Quality > Quantity

The Avs want to win now, they dont want to trade current NHLers for futures. No deal

Gardiner is still there to be signed in the short term and he would mesh well with the uptempo style that the Avs have until Byram is ready...but whatever, the habs could just clear space and sign Gardiner as well until Romanov is ready.

What a terrible deal for Vegas. Taking on 4m of Alzner for no reason at all.

Girard is better defensively than Gardiner. And you know what Girard already meshes well with Avs "uptempo style". Its a bad trade for the Avs and even worse trade rationale

that is the correct take. Avs next year could realistically have a D core that is a set it and forget for the next 4-5 of
Girard Makar
Byram Timmins (who is healthy and looking good)
X Johnson.....that X Coles down to Ian Cole and Zadorov. Which is why Zads is on that 1 year you need to prove that you can up your game, consistency etc. If he doesnt answer the bell while Cole out till Decemeber, he could be the 1 Dman that is traded

Vegas HAS to be cap compliant before putting Clarkson on LTIR. They have their hands tied right now.

Stop this nonsense about LTIR. What you wrote just ain't accurate. Teams are not cap punished for having players on LTIR....especially those with career ending injuries.
Clarkson does not affect Vegas ability at all to sign "active" players to 81.5m

Teams can be over by 10% to account for players going to LTIR. They have 3 players on their last year of contracts making roughly 8m. They are prime candidates to be moved to make space. In this scenario they are adding cap space. They can’t do it even if they wanted to. Which they don’t.

Actually the 10% rule doesn't really apply when LTIR are in play. The 10% rule exists so teams can sign players during the summer then then made deal to be cap compliant by October 1.
A few years ago the Leafs had Horton, Lupul and Rodiabas, 14m in season ending LTIR money. 20% of the cap. They were not hindered during the summer to sign to the cap with "active players.....

Gardiner isnt very cost effective as a UFA d man. I think Girard is just as good and still has 1 year left on his ELC. Even after that he has a bunch more RFA years - Avs are better off keeping him
