i think if the leafs ever move marner or nylander, they'd be looking at bolstering their defense. i'd imagine savard or nutivaara would in the discussions.

For Marner it would be Jones 1 for 1. Nylander is not gonna be traded as he has very very nice contract and is only getting better.

Well in the last 2 days i have seen Leafs fans say Turbo, Bean, and 1st from Canes and Hischer, McLeod, 1st, 2nd from Devils were and i quote “horrible returns for Marner”. So unless you offering Gretzky, Orr, and Lemieux in their prime....i guess not. Lol.

The Leafs would absolutely start the ask at Jones, but that won't make sense from CBJs view, I could see Nuutivara and Josh Anderson as the starting point, if there was a deal it would be a multi player deal both ways. CBJ would give Marner his 11 X5 as long as it doesn't cost them 4 1st

No. Jones > Marner.

Simply not true, 2 completely different positions, I can't think of trade ever where the Defenceman was greater than a 80 pt winger. Who aquires the winger with a Dman wins that trade every time.

No. 1 d-man > top-line winger. To me it's not really up for debate.

But it is up for debate, kind of the point of the thread no?

Considering when CLB acquired Jones, he was buried on the Nashville roster, and they gave up a #1 centre for him, I don't really see the debate.

Well he can walk on water but can he skate? Not to much ice in his day in the Middle East.

Johansson is a #2 Center, CBJ had already given up on him, to improve your team you deal from a position of strength and D is where CBJ is strongest. I'm not saying CBJ will move Jones but he is the best trade chip they have and there is a very good chance they lose him via FA very soon. CBJ has struggled to hang onto there UFA's

In playoff hockey, defenseman is considered to be the most important position, because the differences are small and all goals count. While you might have a solid winger that might help you put 5-10 goals in the net, a solid D like Jones might save you over 25 of them. If the D can help you score, he gets even more valuable. Jones has all the areas here. Marner is useful only in offense.

Marner is a TOP10 RW, both in level and value, but Jones is TOP5 in both. Add the negative effect of Marner's contract situation...yeah. I'd imagine about 31 teams of this league would take Jones over Marner atm.

He was the top centre in Columbus prior to the trade and he's been the top centre in Nashville since. He is not a top 15 #1 centre but he is one none the less. This is about reality, not personal bias.

Seldom is a trade like that made but just like the Drouin for Sergachev deal, the experienced forward moves for the potential top end D because the D are harder to find.
