Not sure anyone can argue that apart from the difference between Rielly and Benning is so massive that the deal falls through.

Edmonton fans will go nuts about it but why would anyone trade 2 elite players for 2 other elite players when you also have to trade a elite #1 potential Norris winner for a bottom pair guy at best?

Yes true but TO needs the space to sign Marner, Plus have to soften the blow of moving Connor

An argument can be made that rielly had a bit of an outlier season when Johnny T joined the team. More than likely it's because he's just hitting his prime but still. I don't think the difference is big enough to make up for the differences between the other two swaps.

Plus i believe that Matthews would be an even Bigger Star in Edmonton. The media is not as harsh in Edmonton so it would have a slightly lower media pressure.

Add Liljegren and Bracco and I'd legitimately consider it.

McD and Draisaitl outscored all 3 leafs even after pro-rating the numbers. Nylander isn't an elite player, Matthews is overpaid and contract sucks. Reilly has the most value but contract is much shorter

That trade hurts both teams, just consider that when EDM is still a complete failure 2 years down the road and McDavids NTC is kicked in he can choose any team he wants which will in turn lower any offer EDM would get on McDavid. If it's a today trade thought it's Matthews/Nylander/Bracco and 1st for just McDavid

Driasitle is less than Matthews, Dria gets his points on McDavids wing pure fact, Matthews puts 40 in in 60 games with rookie wingers

Matthews is a marginally better goal-scorer for sure. But if you think Draisaitl only gets points because of McDavid you're ignoring reality. Oh, and when they play together Draisaitl is center more often than not.

Drai struggled in his own line at the beginning of the season. Then played with mcdavid for the majority of the season which increased his production immensely. He isn't better than Matthews

Not sure if kappy was considered a rookie cause he played 38 games the year before but this was his first full year and Johnson was a rookie soooo

Now look at McDavid's production with and without Draisaitl. Chemistry, it's a thing.

They have the space to sign Marner, and this trade isn't good.

Yes McDavid is the best player in the world and is better than Matthews. How much better? A fair amount I am sure. Is Draisaitl better than Nylander? I am not sold that he is, I am not very high on Draisaitl, mainly because he has never been able to produce at nearly as high a rate away from McDavid. And comparing Rielly to Benning isn't worthwhile. One is a legit elite Defenceman and the other is barely an NHL player.

So this trade weakens TO and doesn't really help them in any way.

The trade is a bad deal for TO. They don't need McDavid or Draisaitl. They have their own star forwards and moving them for two more expensive star players at the cost of an elite #1 Defenceman who is only 26 is stupid. There is no arguement that can make it make sense.

I am sure Oiler fans will say, Draisaitl is way better than Nylander and McDavid way better than Matthews, but it doesn't matter. Matthews is the 2nd best piece in the trade. Rielly is the 3rd best piece in the trade, Draisaitl has never been able to prove himself an elite scorer unless he's been on McDavid's wing and he costs more than Nylander who hasn't hit his prime yet and very well could be an elite player as well. All of that the final piece is a bottom pair defender on a defence that is one of the worst in the entire NHL.
