People tout Stone as if he's the second coming of Christ so I have a hard time believing that a top 5 winger in the league is worth a low 2nd and defensive prospect.
If there is more demand for Hall, New Jersey can up the price. The mArKeT vAlUe of a player is mostly necessity and perception, there aren't any value bars like in NHL to determine which players are more valuable than others.
rentals are only worth what a team is willing to give up for them.
There isn't much of a grand scale here on that.
You aren't talking about signing a guy who has 5 years of control left on him and is 24 years old.
The market on a highend rental is typically a 1st and a prospect type deal. Really high end gets a 1st and a 2nd.
Teams aren't going to tear up their roster for one, and they aren't going to sacrifice multiple years in the draft for one.
So when you realize the market itself has a cap, you can start to realize that it doesn't matter who the player is.
If they are a rental. If they aren't already signed long term. You aren't going to get the moon.
And no player, has any reason to sign that contract unless they really want to. They would rather have freedom to test the market and I don't blame them for that.
Which makes it really hard to get more than that.
