Asking from PIT side - Kap value

Created by: pensfan7813
Team: 2019-20 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Dec. 23, 2019
Published: Dec. 23, 2019
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Simply asking what Kapanen's value is from your fans perspective in terms of penguins assets? I would love to see him in Pittsburgh if they move on from Galchenyuk.

My initial thoughts were below
Trades
TOR
  1. DeSmith, Casey
  2. Schultz, Justin ($1,500,000 retained)
PIT
  1. Kapanen, Kasperi
  2. 2020 3rd round pick (CBJ)

I thought if you were retaining $$ on a player, that means you get them for a percentage of your games. No? smile

This is going to be the problem. We don't have players making in the 1.75 range who we would move lightly. The only one that really makes this fit is Zach Hyman, arguably a more valuable asset than Kapanen. The Leafs have shown they arnt willing to go down to the 20 contract minimum to make something like this work with league min contracts when they passed on getting DeSmith for free on waivers to start the season.

Yeah I see what you mean. Just in terms of value in general, would you say this is fair?

Toronto needs a legit shutdown D-man, not another offensive D-man

I dont know enough about Schultz to give an informed answer to this. All I know is that making the money work on this is going to be very awkward if Ceci doesnt go the other way which is likely a no go for the Pens. Though with a better look, with Galch gone you guys can make the Ceci salary work if you don't retain on Schultz.

With Cece being a UFA it might make sense for the pens to do that. I don't know though

Interesting. I admittedly don't know that much about TOR roster. I just assumed a contender could use a solid R hand puck mover and a solid #2 goalie.

That really isn't what people think it is. Everyone who says it is thinking a big, physical stay at home defenceman. Those guys aren't that good, they never have the puck and they get destroyed by top opposition. They need another defensively responsible play driving right handed defenceman

Marry me.

Also Schultz low-key sucks chunks. The JJ-gud fiasco sort of covers it up but he gets caved in 5v5. He doesn't produce more than he gives up and it isn't close really. I'm on Mobile so I can't post a chart rn but feel free to check evolvinghockey.com under the RAPM chart section to see what I mean

Sooo kind of Schultz-like if you bump up his defensive awareness stats lol

Think more of a parayko type. Maybe a Piet on the more offensive end of things

That's honestly a good trade, but similarly to Toronto, Penguins need a defensive RHD for the bottom pair, not another forward

Under the new system Toronto needs a 2 way Dman.

To the OP...

It is certainly a trade that fits. Leafs would move ceci. Is moving kappy for a ufa and a maybe backup smart asset management... that I’m not sure of. Are players of Shultz and desmith caliber the difference maker of hoisting a cup?

Other than that the trade seems close to fair value.

My thoughts exactly. This would be poor asset management but Schultz would be an upgrade on ceci.

Already taken, but I am flattered.

Schultz isn't the guy I'd pick but this notion TO needs Gudas or Larsson or Manson or they can't win is silly. Those guys are all minor pieces, they aren't bad hockey players but they aren't much better than Ceci is and the cost to get them is way more than they are worth.

Sure getting another Dman is nice for a stretch run, but really who does Schultz replace on the defence that makes them better right now? Same with DeSmith, any guarantees that he is better than Hutchinson? Two "ifs" at the cost of Kapanen? Can't see the Pens who Cup aspirations trading away a Dman without getting one in return.

Schultz isn't really all that good. He's not bad and at times pretty good but I wouldn't put him on the list of players I'd pursue.
