Sjkei to MTL for Lehkonen

Team: 2019-20 New York Rangers
Team Explanation
This is just an idea that popped into my head. A few MTL fans gave me mixed responses on what the returns might be for this deal, but I wanted to see what others thought. I think MTL would really benefit from Sjkei, who can play top pairing with Weber, while the team waits for its youth at that position to develop. Sjkei could be a staple in MTL blueline for the next 4 years. Moving Sjkei would create more cap room for NYR to re-sign players (most notably Deangelo). Lehkonen is a great top 9 defensive forward who can replace Fast's role in the event NYR were unable to re-sign him. Looking for thoughts on what else needs to be added to the deal.

Lehkonen is the player with Danault the coach like the most. He’s a middle six unbelievable good defensively and all around game with a major lack of finish... I’ll take my chance to keep him and might become a 20+ goals scorer

Speak on behalf of yourself, not Bergevin. But it's totally fair not to want to trade him.

Would also like to add that Brady has 2 less points than Lehkonen in 4 less games. Just thought Habs had enough middle 6 wingers and could address one of their needs. And I do not see the other middle 6 wingers you have as attractive of an asset.

Lehkonen is way more than just points. Hes a very good 2way player, very good in PK too

The value is certainly good for MTL.

Oh of course. I was simply saying MTL has a good chunk of those players (Armia, Byron when healthy to name a couple), and they could benefit from a top 4 defenseman who can help out offensively and also help in the defensive zone.

Would adding the Chicago 2nd acquired from the Shaw trade still be worth it for MTL?

Habs fans here. I said it somewhere else, if you look at value, MTL would need to add. Lehkonen is very underappreciated by fans and he is loved by management for his defensive game. Nevertheless, he is a 3rd liner. A good 3rd liner, but a 3rd liner still. Skjei is easily top 4 D. As of right now, he would be top pair in MTL. Maybe MTL fans don't know him enough, which is weird because when NYR kicked us out of playoffs in 2017, Skjei was by far their best D. This is where I discovered him. He is a good offensive D, with also decent defensive game.

I still don't know If I would do the trade considering MTL situation regarding the future. But Skjei is a better player than Lehkonen.

MTL realistically should be adding to this. I will prepare myself for impact.

I would have gone 1 for 1... Until december.

Value is on point (middle 6 vs top 4) but MTL doesnt need a LHD anymore. Playoff dream is dead and Romanov will be top 4 next year. Add Chariot and Mete clear improvement this year and there's no need to sacrifice Lekhonen anymore. Bad timing.

I still think MTL needs to add here. But how about we add some pieces both sides

Skjei + Andersson for Lehkonen + Mete + 2nd

While I don’t necessarily disagree with you. Habs CANNOT expect Romanov to show up and everything on LD is solved.

In the professionnal's opinion, he is NHL ready. His contract will be one way too because of all the money he will leave on the table in Russia. So he's in the line up playing quality minutes for sure.

Chariot-Weber
Romanov - Petry
Mete-Fleury

Adding a LHD would mean trading Mete because he would be pushed out of the line up and exposed during expansion draft. I cant see that happening. Better exposing Byron and Kulak than Lekhonen and Mete.

NYR would not need Mete. Maybe swapping another center and adding a 2021 3rd or something could be inserted instead of Mete.

iirc Mete can play the right side as well. With Petry coming off in 2 years, one could in theory slide Mete over to the right side (and draft a RHD in this upcoming draft). But I think we disagree about how talented the MTL LHD are. I think Sjkei is very much an upgrade over all current MTL LHD.

I would also add that LHD is set for years with all the good prospects coming. If you want to plug a weakness in defense I would focus on the right side, where Petry is leaving in a year, Weber will be declining, Fleury will be second pair DD at most and there's no prospects in sight.

Would Sjkei be 1st LHD now? Yes
Would Romanov be better than him? Impossible to know IMO
Is it worth loosing depth on offense? No

Besides Romanov and Harris (who is in college and may opt to sign elsewhere), what other MTL LHD impress you?

My point above was that you already have that offensive depth. Drouin and Byron are currently hurt, and you still have Armia, Suzuki, and Domi. Also, I would expect the Habs to re-sign Gallagher down the road. Plus, you have more impressive forward prospects in the pipeline than blue line prospects (Caufield, Poehling, Ylonen and Fonstad to name a few). Even if Romanov does become top pairing, you add a significant upgrade to the top 4.

Like I said, I don’t necessarily disagree with you. I agree that Romanov is NHL ready, but expecting him to jump right into a top 4 role playing 20mins+ a night isn’t realistic. And I’ve personally never been that high on Mete, so I would be open to moving him.

A left side D of Chiarot, Skjei, and Romanov would be amazing imo. Skjei and Chiarot can start things off in the top 4, and you can steadily increase Romanov’s responsibility/play time as the season moves forward.

I’ll add that by the time any one of Harris, Struble, or Norlinder ever become NHL dmen (no garantie), guys like Chiarot’s contract will be expiring.

For Rd, I haven’t given up on Juulsen yet, they still have Brook, and odds if Habs trade either Tatar or Petry a Rd prospect will be coming back

Neither Brooks or Juulsen are regular top 6 Dman in the AHL right now. Hard to see them taking 20 minutes shifts in the NHL in a year and a half. Very dangerous bet if you ask me.

Brook needs at least 3 years in the AHL before jumping in the top4 / Fleury will be a #5 at most (doubt) / Just extend Petry easy smile
