Reactions to the Latest Worst Game Ever

Created by: Hawkisles
Team: 2019-20 New York Islanders
Initial Creation Date: Mar. 5, 2020

Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Brassard on Dal Colle were on the 2nd line tonight.

...Why? What have the done recently to earn 2nd line minutes? What did they do tonight to vindicate this decision? I felt bad for Nelson. Sure, he didn't exactly look great tonight, but both of his linemates were incapable of either completing or receiving a pass tonight. If Brass and MDC want good minutes, they need to play good hockey.

I know this isn't a hot take on this site, but we need to bring the rookies up. This team doesn't look hungry, and say what you will about Wahlstrom and Bellows, they played hungry when they were in Islanders uniforms. Go ahead and put them on the roster on the same night. I know Trotz doesn't like to skate rookies, but maybe it's time to send a message to the veterans in the locker room. Worst that could happen is that we lose another game, but at this point, we need to start trying things other that what we've already been doing. "Stick to the system" doesn't work when you're about to cede a playoff spot to your rivals.

The islanders have a non-playoff roster and are far exceeding where they realistically should be. Trotz is the only reason they went as far as they did last year, and why they have been for the most part a contender this year.
I find it quite baffling and hilarious to see that the fans are turning on the only reason this team is relevant.

Trotz is giving minutes to guys playing uninspired hockey just because they're veterans. I can understand being reluctant about letting your playoff hopes rest on the reliability of rookie forwards. I get it. But we need to play like we're hungry fro a playoff spot. It feels like half the roster has already resigned itself to the thought that they've already missed the playoffs, and if our team isn't playing hungry, at least PART of that is on Trotz. Don't get me wrong; I still like Trotz. He'll figure it out eventually (maybe not in time to save this year, but it's not like we were going to win the Cup anyways), either by elevating soem rookies or lighting a fire under the vets. But it's not like the greats don't also mess up. And right now, that's what he's doing. Messing up.

You spelled Lehner wrong.

Sorry, your team did NOT make the playoffs ONLY because of Lehner. Trotz defensive structure and the 6 guys on D in front of Lehner had a MASSIVE impact in their success. I don't see Chicago in the playoff hunt because of Lehner.

Find me the Jack Adams winner and I'll show you a great goaltender.

Find me the team underperforming and chances are... I'll show you a goaltender playing ****ty.

Coaches always get credit for good goalies.

Nyi was 28th in team save percentage in 2017-2018 with a 0.900 https://www.hockey-reference.com/leagues/NHL_2018.html

NYI was first in team save percentage in 2018-2019 with a 0.925 and Lehner was a Vezina finalist.

Don't overthink it.

Look at where Lehner was the year before that too. I believe the NYI coaching staff in it's entirety turned BOTH the isles season and Lehner's career around. Where the goalie might indicate the level of success that a team has, it is not the only reason behind it - also the coaching does play a factor into how well the goalie performs. Varlamov and Greiss also have thrived in NY, as has the defense core in front of him.

Lehner was having serious issues with bipolar disorder and alcohol addiction and abuse prior to last season. It certainly sounds like NYI was a supportive and helpful environment but he deserves credit for overcoming that, and look at his career since.

Varlamov is a career 0.916 goalie. Guess what his schedule % is this year? 0.916
Greiss is a career 0.915 goalie. While he was up last year at 0.927 he is back to 0.914 this year.

So they're not thriving so much as playing to their true skill level.

Coaches get too much credit for good goaltending.
