Spend that Money Pietrangelo Cirelli Dillon

Created by: LouRules
Team: 2020-21 New Jersey Devils
Initial Creation Date: Mar. 6, 2020
Published: Mar. 7, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
The Devils win lottery and draft Jamie Drysdale 3rd overall.

With their second choice at 10th overall, the Devils select the surprisingly still available right wing Alexander Holtz.

The Canadiens make a splash at the end of the first round when the Devils ship them their third first rounder along with PK Subban in exchange for Karl Alzner and the Canadiens second, 13 selections later, as well as a late third.

The Devils save about 5.5 million a year the next two years in sending the entirety of Subban's contract up to Montreal in exchange for Alzner's 3.5 million hit in Binghamton.

This freed up money allows the Devils to spend on FA Prize Alex Pietrangelo to be the Captain and cornerstone of the team for the next six years. They also poach budding star two-way center Anthony Cirelli from the Lightning with a 5 year 30 million contract that requires the Devils first and third in 2021. The Lightning take the unprotected first and spread Cirelli's money between other RFAs Sergachev and Cernak. Finally at the end of free agency the Devils give Brenden Dillon good money 20 million over 4 years to be the defensive partner of Pietrangelo.

Rookie defensemen Ty Smith and Jamie Drysdale beat out Reilly Walsh, Kevin Bahl, Will Butcher, and Connor Carrick. Butcher stays with the team to fill in on both the left side for Smith and right side for Drysdale.

Would love Alex Pietrangelo, But honestly at the most he's not worth more then 7 years $63 million.

One, Pietrangelo isn't going to come here. Two, Montreal isn't going to bring Subban back.

At 24 million dollar overpayment? Pietrangelo would probably play in Oakland

Err, I think that Drysdale is more likely to end up as 10th pick than Holtz, but that's just me.

Also holy f*cking overpayments for those UFAs lmao.

Going all out and spending money made sense last year to convince Hall to stay. Now that he's gone it's better to just let the rebuild take its course, not overpay Pietrangelo by 3-4 million a year and give up an unprotected 1st.

NJ isn't going to give up a first just to move his contract, so it's moot.

Hey new dude. If you didn't know Alzner is trash. Subban is trash but not as bad as Alzner

His cap is also roughly half Subban's and he's owed 1.5m less in real dollars. Since NJ isn't going to give up a 1st just to move Subban's contract, it's moot.

Yes, he did it. The thread starter. NJD isn't going to do it. The team needs high quality players that it has ELC and RFA leverage over to keep them in NJ and the best place to get those players is in the first round. They have to hit the cap floor anyway.

NJD isn't going to trade a 1st round pick to move Subban's contract. Montreal doesn't want him back, either. I'm sure if someone waved a 1st round pick they might reconsider, but that isn't going to happen. It's not confusing. They aren't going to throw good money after bad. If PK rebounds a little next year and he wants to move on, I'm sure they can make that happen for just some money.

Clearly I'm in the minority here but I don't hate the Pietrangelo idea. Cap is going up so that 12M might be more comparable to current 10-10.5M deals. The term is a bit rough but he would need an overpayment to come to NJ. The Devils have desperately needed a true top defenseman for a good decade now, and signing Petro would give them that. I'd offer 12M for 5 years and see what he says.

This was my thinking. I think the 60 million of 12/5 might be enough to entice Pietrangelo to come East. If he ages well he could even sign a contract after the 5 years end.

The cost to move the entirety of PK Subban’s contract was only to TRADE BACK 15 selections from Vancouver’s mid-20s pick to Montreal’s 40th pick. The Devils would not give up a first to move a contract as you keep repeating.

In this deal they trade an expensive but still useful player and 15 spots in the first round for a lesser cap dump, a third, and 2 years 5.5 million of cap space.
