Kerfoot "admitting" to having a down year doesn't mean that it actually was a down year. Maybe he just sucks. I mean, what is he supposed to say when asked about his low point total?.... "Umm err, yeah i have low points but it's still been a great year"... Gotta sell the fans on the hope that he'll somehow improve, which he won't. He is what he is, and Sakic knew that well enough to trade him rather than getting stuck with that contract.
As for your Jost/Kerfoot comparison, measuring defense by how many hits or blocks a player makes is an extremely limit and outdated way to measure how good a player is defensively.
For reference here's a tweet this year showing what type of player Jost is:

Tyson Jost doesn't drive a line but is a valuable asset. He helps keep the puck on the right end of the ice and support offence well
My Spidey-sense is tingling w/ that web looking graphic; WTF?
I don't do analytics.
And that 'mess' from "@faux-garbage" might be a good reason to keep me off of it forever!
* Do you know where the "data" truly comes from?
* Who/whom collects the "data"?
* Did they collect "data" in game or just rip it from the web?
* How many points of "data" are they graphing anyways?
* How are these "data" collectors paid?
* Who signs the payslip of these "data" collectors?
* Are the "data" collectors, or their boss', non-biased/independent OR do they have an agenda?
* What is their qualification(s) to collect this "data"?

Best solution and it's as old as the hills = turn on your TV/NHL-Live and watch TJ for yourself...
