What I Would Do if I Were Kevyn Adams

Created by: OldNYIfan
Team: 2020-21 Buffalo Sabres
Initial Creation Date: Jun. 17, 2020
Published: Jun. 17, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
1. Settle down.

2. Change my voicemail announcement to "Hello, this is Kevyn Adams. In case you didn't know, I'm the new General Manager of the Buffalo Sabres, and if you did, No, I'm not trading any first-round picks. I'm not in right now, so leave me a message and in the immortal words of Joe Walsh, maybe I'll call."

3. Resolve not to trade Eichel, Reinhart, Olofsson, Dahlin, Jokiharju, UPS er UPL, Cozens, Mittelstadt, Johnson or Samuelsson.

4. Post a sign on the wall opposite my desk reading "Don't Do Stupid."

5. Trade away players for draft picks only. Less likely to make serious errors of valuation that way and less likely to acquire players who don't want to be in Buffalo.

6. Draw the right lesson from the Skinner and Okposo contracts.

7. Pull down my pants and slide on the ice.

Not sure whether Hutton recovers from his vision problems or Pilut returns from the KHL.

Ristolainen>Miller. Plus Jets fans would give this offer or something close to it for Miller rather than Ristolainen.

I thought we were learning form the Okposo and Skinner contracts. Why are we giving Sam 6 x 7.25 and Montour 5 x 5.4

He already talked to Eichel and in no way is Eichel looking for a trade right now. Adams alluded to this on the instigators this morning

I'll put you down as a vote that those figures are overpayments. I think both players are coming into their own and in a couple of years, these contracts are going to look pretty good. But you could easily be right.

The question isn't whether Eichel is looking for a trade, it's whether Adams will be gulled into a catastrophe by an "appealing" offer. Rule #3 is to protect Adams from himself.

I’m not sure that Pilut can return from KHL in the next two years, at least he can’t just break the contract and leave for NHL again, I think so, but I don’t remember such cases.

There isn't much there to get rid of. Nobody's going to touch Skinner or Okposo, Johansson is in his last year and the defense, once you get rid of Ristolainen, is okay and shouldn't be weakened (notice I had to add some free agents as stopgaps while Johnson and Samuelsson are maturing). Kahun is newly acquired and all the other forwards are either core or depth players.

Your two sentences seem contradictory to me. I'm trying to get the highest value for one of the RD's, and I may be optimistic about the return available on either. Miller I had pegged at a third and fifth at best.

If its appealing enough to get Eichel its probably worth it at that point. The only appealing offers would be massive overpays

Good thing about Eichel is that he just wants to win and doesn't care where that is. He doesn't want to leave Buffalo because Buffalo is capable of winning if a GM makes the right moves. I have no clue about Adams at all but I want him to focus on make some trades to address our needs first and then focus on drafting well

Well Montours advanced stats are just bad and at 26 he should be considered a finished product so not expecting any growth there. Sam I feel is a good player but not worth 7 million AAV. Again at 24 I think we can assume he is close to a finished product with minimal growth potential. The only way I can see his production going up is for him to play with better players and with him playing the majority of his minutes with Jack already I don't consider it likely that his production goes way up

Fair enough. That's certainly an opinion worth weight.

He has an NHL out clause in his contract.

Also if Buffalo gives him a qualifying offer they hold his rights for 1 year after his KHL deal expires if does elect to play in Russia

Once again you're missing my point. I'm worried that what's "appealing enough to get Eichel" won't be at all appealing to you or me. Like, for example, the 11th overall pick, Jonas Brodin and Mats Zuccarello: "a high first-round pick, a great defensive LD and a first-line RW."

The problem is that there isn't a whole lot of trade ammunition in the current roster once Rule #3 is invoked. I put that there precisely to prevent Adams from "making a trade to address our needs" like Sam Reinhart for Jonas Brodin.

Nice preamble. I would add to your list:

- "win draft lottery". A top-3 pick would go a long way towards assuaging a pretty riled fanbase right now.
- hire a topnotch analytics team. The NHL is introducing player and puck tracking technology next season (IIRC) and having a bunch of brilliant mathematicians right on it will give Adams a leg up.

I think Sabres are really going to struggle to sign FA, perhaps even their own, I like the idea of acquiring pics since they really need to build through the draft, imo.

Amen. For example, Johan Larsson has quietly acquired a nice reputation as a reasonable penalty killer and fourth-line center. I could easily see him signing somewhere else, even for the same money I've given him here.
