Why wouldn’t flames keep their pick and trade for Murray’s rights? It would be a lot cheaper

Let's put this goalie trade into perspective. There's another trade I'd like to high light as a comp... In 2016 this goalie was coming off a .919 SV% 2.3G GAA winning the Jennings...had a contract that was for $5M and had 5 more years left on it. That trade value was a 1st and a 2nd round pick.

Fast forward 4 years...we have another trade proposed here for a goalie coming off a .909SV% 2.85 GAA that has 1 year left on the contract ironically also $5M...and we're saying a 1st and a 3rd is the value?

To get to the point...these are both Freddie Andersen trades. This trade suggests that 4 years of really good goaltending means literally the difference between a 2nd and 3rd round pick.

I agree Freddie isn't getting traded. I understand that's the point, but my point is the trade value.

Freddie was that exact .919 goalie the whole tenure with Leafs. If he is traded the price would be similar but a little lower due to his age

No.. he was almost replaced by rookie goalie and had subpar stats and performances for year and a half now. You are not getting Kappy + pick for him

Lower due to age.
Lower due to 1 year vs 5 years.
Lower due to coming off a bad year.
Lower due to better players like Lehner (who undebatable was better than Freddie last year) got a 2nd and a prospect....AND half his salary needed to be retained...AND it was at the TDL where players are at a premium vs the draft when picks are at a premium.

That's literally 6 reasons that hurt his trade value and that's just off the top of my head.

There's tons of big differences.

You know the Leafs signed Freddie after that deal as he was RFA, right?

Well then ... No deal bc we have no need for a smaller 3rd line LW bc we have like 6 possible LWers

kerfoot is a center. He would be a 3C on Pens. I feel like that would be a good trade for both sides but Leafs arent trading Freddie so its not happening regardless.

I do. Does that 1 very real point negate the 6 very real points?

***EDIT*** Let's add a 7th. How is demoting Rittch & sending away a 1st round pick for a rental...helping CGY?

6 very real points? Pick is conditional in that deal so its basically Freddie for 1st until he re-signs. Which is lower than it was in 2016. Counting in is his age (26 vs. 30), sort of meh performances this year but still counting other 3 top level years into it. Lehners deal was lower valued since Vegas had their starter and he was brought as not a need and was NOT expected to re-sign. Lehner is better goalie. Not by much but still he is a better goalie, but 1st round pick for Freddie is a must and whatever is condition on other things is up to debate.

Kerfoot is too small for Center especially for 3rd line Center .... he has a 46% face off win %... +he barely avg's 400 faceoff per yr. that would be 5th or 6th on Pens this yr

Its a great deal for TOR, horrible for PIT

Now if u did Murray for Kappy + a conditional 2nd or 3rd - depending on Murray gms played .... Id think about that one
No matter Murrays injuries & play of late... he is still a 25-26yr old 2- time Stanley Cup winning goalie... and last I checked there isn't to many of them around... especially in TOR.
