Sergachev Sheet and Starting to Improve

Created by: dtd_tank
Team: 2020-21 Detroit Red Wings
Initial Creation Date: Jul. 2, 2020
Published: Jul. 2, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Nielsen bought out for roster space. Still have space to take a cap dump from another team if possible. Lots of shuffling can happen in the bottom 6, with Givani Smith seeing some time and Helm playing in for Timashov, Rasmussen, or Brome in case of struggles. Veleno will get a short look this year, and Rossi should see his 9 games also.

How? TB currently has $1.261M in cap space. They only have a little coming off the books this offseason, Vasy is getting a $6M raise, and the cap is not set to change.

I’m really not sure how they will re-sign Sergachev & Cirelli, especially if offer sheeted. They only have 3 players making >$1.8M who do not have a NTC/NMC: Kucherov, Point, Vasilevskiy. I don’t see those guys getting moved.

If some offers 6.5m plus on Cirelli or Sergachev, thats when it becomes more difficult for Tampa

Well it's the first team to send a sheet that counts, and if Sergachev accepts then TB has a week to either match or figure out their cap space. Luckily for them, they have the luxury of going 10% over during the summary. I still don't see how they make it under cap by signing both guys unless they get someone with a NTC to waive.

Theoretically, a team could offer sheet both of them if they send offers at the right tiers (<4.227M for one and >4.227M for the other) and have their own 1st/2nd/3rd. But for Detroit, it doesn't make much sense to lose their 1st which could easily be a top 3 pick next year.

Julien Brisebois easily matches that offer sheet on Mikhail Sergachev, You'd have to offer him $7 million plus to sign with Detroit probably even more. And no way Yzerman would ever do it. Your Tyler Bertuzzi and Anthony Mantha signing are too low. Tyler Bertuzzi 5 x 5.5 Anthony Mantha 5 x 6.5 minimal Robin Lehner 6 x 6.5 give or take.

Tampa right now currently has $5.333 million give or take, Plus Killorn will be out the door Sergachev and Cirelli would take less in Tampa before ever committing to Detroit that's just pure fact.

If he were going to sign for that little, Tampa would match that in a heart beat. They’d have to buy out or trade ONE buy to make it work. Kudos though for not having DET do an OS that included a 1st rd pick.

The $5.333M is based on a roster of only 15 players. Let's pretend Killorn is traded also, so we have $9.78M and 14 players on the roster. We need at least 3 Dmen and 3 Forwards just to get to 20 players.

Now let's pretend Cernak and Stephens each take a concession at $1M AAV. Now you have $7.78M to sign 2 Dmen + 2 Forwards.

Now add 2 players at league minimum ($700k). You have $6.38M to sign Cirelli & Sergachev just to ice 20 players.

I think a $4.2M offer sheet is reasonable because there's no way Cirelli accepts $2.18M AAV if TB & Sergachev both accept my offer sheet.

I'd be surprised if Mantha gets that much considering he hasn't played a full NHL year or put up 50 pts once ever. Having potential and playing to it are two different things.

But sure, give them those contracts and we still have >$6M in space.

TBL would match anything under $5mm for Sergachev, and under $3.5mm for Cirelli pretty easily. How do they pay for it? Here is how:

Threaten players with NTC with demotions (happens all the time) in this order: Gourde, Johnson, Palat, Killorn (who has a limited NTC for 2020-2021). You either waive or go to Syracuse. Guaranteed they all give JBB a list of places they'll go. Know that you won't get full value for any of these guys.
Say goodbye to Maroon, Schenn, and Bogosian.
Promote Foote to fill in 1 D spot
Promote Volkov to fill 1 F spot
Trade Coburn (at 1.7mm for 1 year, a very good option as 5/6 dman) or say goodbye to Shattenkirk (who is going to command $3mm+ on the open market anyway)
Buy an LTIR guy from a team (Zetterberg is a good candidate)
Don't overpay Cernak (should come in around 2.25mm max)

There are plenty of examples of TBL making it work on the boards. But one thing I did see someone do is to put together a package for Stamkos, which is something I would consider entertaining if I'm JBB. That's $8mm right there.

TB will lose tons of rep if they force a guy performing decently to Syracuse because they put themselves in a tough cap situation. The rest of the league's players aren't that stupid, which is why this doesn't actually ever happen. You can't force a player to waive their NTC unless they want to or, again, you lose rep.

I already traded Killorn in this scenario assuming he waives. Trading Coburn means he has to also waive his NTC. Paying Cernak $2.25M is more than double what I stated. Foote makes $225k more than league min.

I just don't see it happening without losing one of Sergachev/Cirelli (who I doubt takes $3.5M after playing 2C and putting up 0.65 PPG), or trading 2 of Killorn, Palat, Johnson, Gourde (which is also unlikely IMO).

easy match for Tampa, they don't think twice. That being said, it may make Cirelli a more difficult signing if someone were to offer sheet him

Yep, so then we sweep in and offer Cernak the same deal. And if they match that, then I'm offering max sheet (for a 3rd round pick) on Cernak. smile

Cirelli gets a solid 2C roster spot with a young Detroit crowd, playing full time with Zadina. He has a good shot at accepting IMO.

Pretty sure that wouldn't work. As a player I would call their bluff. And if they did send the player down, it doesn't solve the issue of needing cap space. Back to square one and now you've pissed off the players.

What do you mean how? They move the pieces necessary to make it work....how can you possibly think that's realistic?

Read the comments above. A lot of things need to change for them to fit Sergachev & Cirelli into the roster with reasonable contracts. And if they figure it out enough to sign Sergachev to this offer sheet, then I'd propose sending the same offer to Cirelli ($4.2M x 2-3 yrs) meaning TB would need to find an extra $8.4M in cap space for next year while icing a full team.

Idc about the comments above. To suggest that either of those things are realistic is absurd. Palat, Killorn, Johnson, Maroon all pieces that can be easily moved to make room. Also, TB would end up just matching and then trading them for equal value. You think TB is going to just take a 2nd for either of those guys??

I don't think they would unless they were forced to. They can't simply force Palat/Killorn/Johnson out (who cares about Maroon, he's a UFA making pennies).

I will be very interested to see how they solve this cap situation. I don't see them doing it without getting 2 of Gourde/Palat/Killorn/Johnson to waive their NTC's unless Cirelli/Sergachev/Cernak all take very small deals. And getting multiple players to waive their NTC's is not necessarily a good look.

1. Tampa matches in a heartbeat, that is probably less than what they wanted to offer him at that term
2. You can only send 1 offer sheet at a time

Yep, so if they're smart then they'll have at least 2 of Sergachev/Cirelli/Cernak signed before 11/1 (FA opening).

If Sergachev would even sign that which I doubt he would. TB can say we match what's then they have what 10 days or 2 weeks to make that happen.
